They needed to lay low for a time after a mission, so when Joe and Nicky said they would go to their cabin in Norway for the winter, Nile asked if there was room for her there, and the boys said yes.
It wasn't the world's biggest cabin with its one-room bedroom, but Joe and Nicky said Nile could have it, and they would make a bed in the living room. Something else Nile had to get used to was that there was no electricity, only a satellite phone to contact the world if needed, and if she wanted to get washed, she had to get water from the nearby creek. Joe and Nicky told her if she was getting water, she should also bring something back so that there always was water in the kitchen for cooking. And if she needed to take a leak, there was an old loo in a shed. Joe and Nicky also taught her how to get ready for the winter so they didn't have to leave the place before spring. They took her hunting, fishing, and showed her how to collect berries, mushrooms, and herbs, plus other things nature provided them. They also taught Nile how to prevent getting cabin fever, and Nile loved it all.
It took Nile some time to learn how to use it all, including the old stove, but today, she was proud of herself because she had picked the berries and baked a berry pie without burning it.
Joe: "Wow, that pie smells amazing."
Nile: "When you return from hunting, a slice will be waiting for you."
Joe: "Sounds good. Nicky?"
Nicky came into the living room and ruffled his hair.
Nicky: "Joe, how many times do I have to tell you that this isn't a Turkish bazaar, so there isn't a need to shout?"
Joe: "Sorry, old habit."
Joe kissed Nicky.
Joe: "Until I get back know that I will be missing you by my side, and whenever I look at the moon, I'll be thinking of you."
Nicky: "Incurable romantic. I will also miss you. Better get going. You got some way to cover before dark."
Nicky kissed Joe again.
Joe: "Nile, please look after the love of my life for me. And if someone hits on him, you got my permission to...."
Nicky: "We're over 150 kilometres from the nearest town, so there is zero chance of us going clubbing."
Nile: "I promise to keep an eye on him."
Joe: "That was all I wanted to hear. See you in two days times. Love you both."
Joe hugged them both before kissing Nicky again. Then Joe left with his rifle and a knife.
Nicky: "Before we eat your pie, we have to finish our work first. How is it going with the building of the smoking oven?"
Nile placed the berry pie in the small window so it could cool down.
Nile: "I think I'm doing it wrong because the smoke isn't staying inside. Can you have a look at it and maybe give me a clue to what I'm doing wrong?"
Nicky: "Sure thing, but you still have to do the work yourself so you learn how to preserve food for the long winter."
When Nile returned to the kitchen a couple of hours later, she screamed so loud that Nicky came running with his rifle.
Nicky: "What's wrong?"
Nile pointed ahead of her, and Nicky saw a moose eating the berry pie. The moose ignored the screaming lady in the room.
Nicky: "Welcome to Norway, Nile."
Nicky placed his hand on Nile's shoulder.
Nicky: "Remind me that tomorrow I have to teach you how to keep animals out of the cabin."
Nile: "Thanks, but the pie..."
Nicky: "That you have to take up with the moose, and then you also have to tell Joe about it because you promised him a slice."
Nile: "You're a lot of help. What am I to do with the moose?"
Nicky: "It will move on eventually. If you need anything, I'll be outside chopping wood."
Nicky left the kitchen laughing while Nile just stared at the moose.
