Chapter 1: The birthday gift
Chapter Text
“Thank you for coming with me.” says TJ, smiling at his sibling.
“Oh, don’t worry about it!” answers Jack, patting TJ’s shoulder.
Today is TJ’s 20th birthday, and the Bright siblings decided on a group present for him. For the day, he will get to decide an activity to do with each sibling. So far, he went birdwatching with Mikell and he brought Claire to the bookshop. Now, he asked Jack to bring him to get a tattoo. He’s wanted to get it for quite a long time now, but he was scared to go alone. So, now’s the perfect timing.
“What tattoo do you want to get?” Jack asks him.
“A bird and a flower.” TJ answers, touching his right shoulder “Nothing too big, though.”
“Aw, is the flower because of me?” Jack asks, putting their arm around his shoulders.
“Maybe. I mean, you’re taking me there and you’re paying, it’s the least I can do:” TJ says. “So, where’s the shop you’re taking me?” TJ asks.
“It’ not far. It’s next to my shop. I never really went inside, but I’ve seen people coming out of there. They seem to make pretty good tattoos.” Jack explains. “And, they’re not too expensive.” TJ laughs.
Jack and TJ keep walking and talking, until they arrive in front of the tattoo parlor.
“It’s kinda funny, you know.” TJ says “There’s this tattoo parlor, all black and edgy, and then there’s your flower shop that it’s all colorful and pretty. Quite the contrast.”
Jack laughs. “I guess you’re right. Come on, let’s go in.”
Jack and TJ enter the shop. No one’s inside. “They must all be in the back. Let’s wait for them here.” Jack says, before sitting down in a chair. TJ sits beside them, and they both wait for a tattoo artist to be available. After five or so minutes, they hear a voice coming from the back.
“I’m happy you like your tattoo, ma’am.” Says the voice. Soon enough, a young lady exits, soon followed by, Jack guesses, is the tattoo artist. As soon as he exits the back, Jack can’t help but realize just how good looking he is. He has messy blond hair that frame his freckled face. He looks at them with his round glasses which hide big, blue eyes, smiles, and says: “Oh, other costumers. I’ll arrive in a minute!” and he goes to the cash register.
“I am really happy I came with you.” Says Jack “Otherwise, I wouldn’t have known I had such a cute neighbor!” He chuckles, still looking at the blond man.
TJ groans “Please Jack, don’t make this weird.” He says, putting his head in his hands.
“What do you mean make it weird?” Jack asks, faking ignorance.
“Oh, you know.” TJ says, glaring at them.
“Really TJ, you have nothing to worry about! I will just, I don’t know, ask the pretty lad their number.”
TJ gives Jack a death stare. “That’s exactly what I was talking about. If you really wanna talk to them, please come back another time. I do not want to see you flirt today, because no matter how pure your intentions are, you always seem weird.” TJ says.
“Oh, come on! Now you’re being mean. I’m not that bad at flirting. I’ll show you-“
“Welcome to our shop! I’m sorry, but today I’m the only one working, so if you both want a tattoo, you’ll have to wait.” The tattoo artist interrupts, still smiling.
“Oh, don’t worry, I’m only accompanying my little brother.” Jack answers, smiling as well. Both them and TJ stand up, and they laugh softly. “Gosh, I didn’t know I had such a beautiful neighbor.” Jack says, still smiling. The man blushes a little.
“Oh, thank you. Um, let’s go in the back, shall we?” he asks, still smiling, though now a bit more nervously.
Jack, TJ and the tattoo artist walk to the back. Jack looks at the man again, noticing that he is a bit shorter than him, but he looks more fit. He also notices two tattoos on both of his arms: on his right arm, he has a star tattoo, while on his left arm, he has some simple spirals almost covering the whole arm.
“I like your tattoos.” Jack says, smiling. “I’m Jack, by the way, and this is my brother TJ. I own the flower shop beside here.”
“Oh, you’re the florist! I understand now why you said neighbor. Well, nice to meet you Jack, I’m Simon.” The man smiles back at Jack. He really is gorgeous, Jack thinks.
The three of them arrive in the back, where there are a few chairs and what seems to be a recliner chair.
“So, TJ, what tattoo did you have in mind?” Simon asks.
“Uhh, I was thinking a bird and a flower on my right shoulder.” TJ answers, slightly nervous. “I tried to draw it…” he continues, then he shows Simon the picture he drew on his phone.
“Oh, that’s actually quite good!” Simon says. “Okay, sit in the chair, and we’ll start.”
TJ sits in the recliner chair, while Jack sits on another chair. Simon sits beside TJ, and he starts making the tattoo.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“And, I’m done!” Simon says. “So, do you like it?”
TJ looks in the mirror that Simon is holding. He gasps, and he immediately smiles. “It’s amazing, thank you so much!” TJ exclaims.
The tattoo really is amazing. Jack watched the whole process, and it was amazing looking at how Simon was concentrated on the tattoo. He really looked like he was in another world while doing that.
“Let’s go to the front now.” Simon says, then he stands up.
While they’re going back to the entrance, Jack starts compliment Simon. “You really are an amazing tattoo artist. I wish I could draw like you.” Jack says. “I’m sure you’ll become a professional.”
Simon blushes a little, smiling. “Well, thank you, but I’m not planning in staying here. I’m only working here while I’m at university.” Simon says. “But I’m glad you and your brother liked the tattoo.”
“You’re studying? What major?” Jack asks, impatient to know more.
“I’m studying psychology.” Simon says, smiling.
“That’s cool. So, how much for the tattoo?” Jack asks.
“It’ll be 200$.” Simon says, at the cash register.
“Quite expensive, I would say.” Jack jokes, pulling out their card.
“You never had a tattoo, have you?” Simon laughs. “That’s a normal price.”
“I can’t say I have. But if getting one means spending more time with you, I can think about it.” Jack says, winking.
Simon blushes, again. It’s really easy to make him blush, Jack thinks.
When they finished paying, Jack and TJ start going towards the door.
“Anyways, we have to go now. It’s been a pleasure meeting you, maybe we’ll see each other again.” Jack says, smiling.
“The pleasure’s mine. Good bye, have a great day.” Simon says, smiling as well.
“Thank you again, bye!” TJ says.
TJ and Jack exit the shop, and start walking towards the bus stop.
“At the end you haven’t asked him his number.” TJ says.
“I didn’t want to seem too weird. Either way, I’m planning in bringing him some flowers tomorrow to thank him, and then maybe I could ask for his number.” Jack says. “Also, I think he totally fancies me. He was always blushing.” Jack says, smiling.
“Fly low, Jack, fly low.” TJ says. “He was probably just embarrassed.”
“Yeah, sure, sure.” Jack says. “Anyway, let’s go back home. We have a little surprise for you.”
“Last time you said so you let the horse inside the house.” TJ says, laughing. “Mike wanted to kill you.”
Jack laughs as well. “But then he admitted it was indeed funny.”
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The next day, Jack arrives at their shop earlier than usual. They go in, and start looking around for some specific flowers.
“Gosh, where are they…” Jack mumbles to themselves, still looking around. “I’m sure I had them… here!” they exclaim triumphantly, pulling out some deep pink roses and some yellow lilies from a shelf. Then, they go to the counter to make a bouquet of the two flowers. “I hope Simon knows something about flower language. It’s always awkward having to explain what they mean.” Jack says.
Then, once they’re done, they practically rush out of the door to go to the tattoo parlor. Jack goes inside, and immediately sees Simon.
“Simon!” They exclaim, going over to the counter.
“Oh, hey Jack!” Simon smiles. “What brings you here?”
“I have a little something for you, to say thank you for yesterday!” Jack says, and pulls the bouquet from behind them.
As soon as the bouquet reaches under Simon’s nose, he starts sneezing.
“Oh- Oh God! Sorry, sorry!” Jack says, opening the window and throwing the flowers away.
“I-it’s fine, really, you didn’t know.” Simon says, blowing his nose. “What flowers were they…?”
“Uhm… roses and lilies…” Jack says, embarrassed. They really didn’t make an amazing impression, did they?
“I’m allergic to roses…” Simon says, softly smiling. “I’m so sorry you wasted those flowers… here, let me pay them for you…” Simon starts taking out his wallet from his pocket.
“No no! You don’t need to! Really, don’t worry!” Jack says.
“No really, it’s the least I can do.” Simon says, handing Jack some coins.
“Listen. It’s fine. But… if you really wanna repay me, how about we go get a coffee tomorrow morning?” Jack says, winking.
Simon laughs. “That was really smooth. Alright, see you tomorrow. I guess you need to go open the store now.” Simon says.
“Yeah. So, tomorrow at 8, in the café in the corner?” Jack asks.
“Sounds great.” Simon smiles. Gosh, that smile really is amazing.
“See you tomorrow then!” Jack says, and leaves.
Jack walks back to their shop, with a big smile on their face.
Chapter Text
This morning, Simon woke up to his alarm going off. Groaning, he sat up. As usual, he went to the kitchen to eat breakfast, when he remembered why he woke up early that day in the first place.
“What are you doing already up?” Charles, Simon’s half-brother, asks him.
Simon was living with him until he could buy his own apartment. He’s taller than Simon of at least 20 cm, and has black hair and cold grey eyes. They don't look alike at all, and people were always shocked when they said they were brothers, especially since they didn’t even have the same surname.
“You don’t have work today, nor lesson, right?” Charles continues.
“Oh, I'm going to eat breakfast with someone this morning.” Simons says, smiling.
“You have a date?” Charles raises an eyebrow. “I thought you didn’t date.”
“I mean, I wouldn’t say this is a date.” Simon explains. “I’m afraid they think it is. But we had a bit of an accident so this is my way of… repaying them.”
“Tell them if you’re not interested. Don’t do like last time.” Charles warns him.
“Yeah, yeah I know.” Simon says, sighing.
About three months ago, a girl in one of Simon’s classes asked him on a date. Simon wasn’t really interested, but he only told her after four dates. Needless to say, she didn’t take it well.
“What’s their name?” Charles asks.
“Jack. They work in the flower shop beside where I work.” Simon explains.
“Oh, I know it. I went there before. The owner has red hair, right?” Charles asks.
“Yes. Now I need to start getting ready. I don’t like being late.” Simon says, going towards the bathroom.
“Call me if something happens.” Charles says.
“I know how to take care of myself, you know right?” Simon says, laughing.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After getting dressed, Simons goes to take the bus to get to the center of the city. He starts to get a bit nervous.
What if they get mad after I tell them I’m not interested? What if they get upset? What if they never get over me? Simon starts worrying, and he’s so deep in his thoughts that he almost misses his stop.
When he arrives at the café, he realizes he’s arrived early. So, he decides to get a table in the meantime.
After about five minutes, Jack arrives. They are wearing just a simple brown t-shirt with a pair of jeans, and white sneakers. Simon realizes that their hair looks more put together than yesterday. They seem to have tried to comb their hair, since they look less wavy.
When Jack sees him, they smile and wave, and then they sit beside Simon.
“Good morning. How have you slept?” Jack asks.
“Fine, and you?” Simon smiles, nervously, and he starts fidgetting with his rings.
“A part from my baby sister waking up in the middle of the night, it was fine.” Jack says, laughing.
Simon smiles, unsure on how to answer. Jack seems to notice it, and they change subject.
“I never really asked your pronouns. Sorry, I really don’t know where my head was.” Jack says, showing an embarrassed smile.
“Oh, yeah, I never asked either. I go by he/him. And you?” Simon answers. Seriously, how could he forget? He just hopes he didn’t accidentally misgender Jack.
“They/them.” Jack says. “Let’s order, shall we?”
“Oh, yeah, sure.” Simon answers.
Jack calls the waiter. They got a cup of black coffee, while Simon got a macchiato.
“Black coffee? Really?” Simon asks, surprised.
“I really like it. Not a fan of sweets, actually.” Jack says, laughing a bit.
“I could never. I hate bitter drinks. I’m much more of a sweet tooth.” Simon answers.
When the coffee arrives, they start drinking it. In the meantime, an awkward silence has formed. Simon starts to think how to restart the conversation, but he couldn’t think of anything. Why did Jack stop talking? Did he say something bad? Simon started to feel just as anxious as he was on the bus, when finally, he manages to break the silence.
“I have to tell you something.” “Can I ask you something?” Him and Jack say in the same moment. They look at each other, and Jack starts to laugh. Simon follows, laughing as well.
“Sorry, go on.” Jack says, when they finish laughing.
Simon stops laughing abruptly. He lost all the confidence to say it. So, he just smiles awkwardly and says “No, no, you start.”
“Oh, okay.” Jack says. “Do your tattoos have meaning? Of course, if you don’t wanna tell me, it’s okay. I was just wondering.” Jack asks.
Simon smiles. “Yes, they do. Well, one does.” Simon uncovers his right arm. “It’s really simple. I’ve always loved astronomy. My brother actually was the one who made me discover it. He bought me a book about the universe when I was six, and since then I always loved stars. I know a good number of names of stars and constellations. While the other… well, they’re just spirals, I liked how they looked, that’s all.”
When Simon looks up from his arm, he realizes that Jack was staring at him. He immediately blushes. Did he say something weird? Did he speak too much? He never realizes how much talking is too much, was it too much?
“I love the stars as well.” Jack simply says, smiling warmly. Simon relaxes a bit, returning the smile. “So, what did you need to tell me?”
Simon stops smiling. How can he tell them that he's not interested in dating at the moment? Jack’s so nice, and he really doesn’t want to hurt them.
“I, ehm…” Simon starts stuttering. “I… listen Jack, I’m really enjoying being in your company but… I’m… not interested in dating… a-at least at the moment. A… a few years ago I went through some stuff… and… and I don’t think I’m ready to… start again.” Simon says, not looking at Jack.
When he looks back up, he can see that Jack’s smile disappeared. Simon felt so much guilt right now. He really did break their heart, did he?
But not even a minute after, Jack started smiling again.ù
“It’s fine, really. If you don’t feel comfortable, I won’t push it.” Jack says smiling, though their tone was sad.
Simon feels relieved. “We can still be friends, if you’d like. I like your company.” Simon says, trying to cheer them up a bit.
“Of course!” Jack smiles again.
Simon starts smiling as well. He was really happy Jack didn’t take it too badly.
“So, I was thinking that maybe we could go out today. I mean, after you finish your coffee. If it's okay for you.” Jack proposes.
“Oh, I’d like to, but I really need to study today. I have an exam in just a few days.” Simon says, a bit sadly. He certainly would have preferred going out instead of studying.
“Oh right. University. I forgot.” Jack answers, laughing a bit.
“You’re not studying, right?” Simon asks, while finishing his coffee.
“Nah, school’s not for me. For now, I like working at my shop.” Jack answers. “The only thing is that I don’t make much money. I’m still living at my parents’…” Jack mumbles.
“Well, I’m living at my brother’s. I’m not in a better situation than you are.” Simon says, smiling.
“Yeah, but you’re a student! It’s normal. I’m not at school anymore. Still living with them it’s not normal.” Jack says in a desperate tone.
“That’s not true. Plenty of people live with their parents, and that’s perfectly normal.” Simon says. “No need to feel ashamed.”
“I don’t feel ashamed.” Jack answers, with a defensive tone.
“Yes, you are. Don’t lie, I’m good at reading people.” Simon says, smiling mischievously.
“Right. Psychology major.” Jack mumbles.
“Anyways, I think I need to get going now.” Simon says. “It was nice talking to you. I guess we’ll see each other soon at the shop.”
Jack laughs. “Of course. But, If you give me your number, we might see each other more frequently…” Jack winks.
“I think I’ll wait. We still met two days ago, remember.” Simon says.
“Fair point. Well, I guess I’ll see you on Monday at your shop.” Jack answers.
“This time try not to bring flowers in the shop. I would rather not have an asthma attack.” Simon says teasingly.
“I’ll try my best” Jack answers, throwing their hands in to the air.
After, they both stood up and went to pay. Or, Simon payed for them.
Then, they parted ways when they exited the shop, promising to see each other on Monday, as friends of course. But Jack was still hoping that they might be able to date the younger boy one day…
Notes:
There's no real reason why I headcannon Charles Gears and Simon Glass as half-brother. The idea just kinda popped in my head one day, and I thought why not?
Chapter Text
As Jack was going back home, they couldn’t stop thinking about Simon. As much as they were happy to be Simon’s friend, the reject was still painful. Jack had hoped that this time would have been the good one, but clearly, it was not.
When Jack arrived home, they let out a big sigh, trying to see the bright side. They didn’t have many friends, so a new one could only be a good thing, right?
Jack smiled at the thought that at least they could be spending time with Simon, and promised to themselves to let their feelings fade away, to prevent creating embarrassing situation with the blond man.
So, with this in mind, Jack walked inside their house. They were living in their parents' house, but they weren’t really planning on leaving any time soon. They didn’t want to say the whole truth to Simon, mainly to not upset him. Jack was still living at home because their parents haven't been home for three years now, without telling anyone anything. Adam and Evelyn were always busy at work, and they were never home on week days, and during the week-ends they tried to go back home, but couldn’t always. But since Sarah was born, they just copletely stopped coming And now with Mike out of town due to his new job, Jack has to take care of their younger siblings. And Jack doesn’t have the heart to leave TJ to take care of their sisters, mainly because they still see him as a kid, despite their best efforts to acknowledge his actual age.
As soon as Jack stepped in the house, Claire, their younger sister, ran to hug him.
“Jackie!” She exclaims, smiling happily at them.
“Hello princess.” They say, stroking her hair.
“You’re already back?” TJ asks from the kitchen.
“Yup, Simon had to study.” Jack answers. They walk to the kitchen, finding TJ busy with cooking. “You’re cooking? I told you, you don’t need to. I can cook for us.”
“I know, but your cooking’s trash.” TJ says, glaring at Jack. “So, I took it upon me to cook a decent meal for once.”
“Hey! That’s not true!” Jack says, defensively.
“TJ cooks better than you.” Claire says, looking up at Jack.
“I thought you were on my side!” Jack says, pretending to be hurt. Claire giggles, then she runs back into her room.
Jack waits for Claire to be gone, then they ask TJ: “Do you think they’ll come home today?”
TJ shrugs his shoulder. “Dunno. Mike called and said he was coming. He also said he has some gifts.” TJ answers.
Jack sighs. They haven’t seen their parents in three years. “I just hope they would call.” They say, sadness in their voice.
TJ doesn’t answer, instead he concentrates more on the food.
After a few seconds, TJ breaks the silence. “How did it go? With the tattoo artist?” He asks.
Jack lets out a small laugh. “He said he’s not interested.”
“Ouch. You okay?” TJ asks, a bit worried.
“Yeah… but he said we can still be friends.” Jack says, trying to sound happier than they were.
“Did he say why he wasn’t interested?” TJ asks, curious.
“He said that he went through some stuff… didn’t really ask the details.”
As soon as Jack finished talking, the front door opened. “Guess who’s home.”
“Hi Mike.” Jack said, smiling.
“What’s this good smell? This is definitely not Jack’s cooking.” Mike says, laughing and going into the kitchen.
“Hiya Mike.” TJ smiled.
“Oh, finally you took over the cooking! I don’t know how you and Claire were still alive living only on Jack’s food.” Mike says.
“I hate all of you.” Jack says, sticking their tongue out.
“What are you, a child?” Mike says, rolling his eyes.
“And… I’m done.” TJ announces, proudly. “Can you call Claire?”
“I’m going.” Mike answers. “Where’s Sarah?”
“Sleeping. Don’t you dare wake her up.” TJ answers, giving Mike a death glare.
“I won’t, I won’t” Mike puts his hand in the hair, walking away.
Jack sits down at the table, while TJ serves the food.
“I made some spaghetti. I followed an Italian recipe.” TJ explains.
“Sounds delicious.” Jack compliments.
Shortly after, Mike and Claire joined the other two. As they all started eating, they talked about the recent events.
“So, how did it go to the tattoo parlor?” Mike asks.
“TJ has an amazing tattoo! I want one too when I’m older!” Claire says, smiling.
“It went amazingly. The tattoo artist was really nice. Jack’s now has a crush on him.” TJ explains.
“Didn’t they have a crush on the barista a few weeks ago?” Mike asks teasingly.
“Oi! That wasn’t a crush, I just found her cute!” Jack says, a bit annoyed.
“I was joking. So, did you make a move?” Mike asks.
“They did, and they were rejected.” TJ answers for Jack.
“Can you please let me explain my life? Thank you.” Jack says, giving TJ a little punch on the arm. “Also, he said we can still be friends. So, maybe one day, he’ll fall for me.”
“Finally, you have a friend that isn’t a complete idiot. He’s not complete idiot, is he?” Mike asks.
“No, no. He’s really sweet. He studies psychology and he loves astronomy.” Jack explains.
“He seems nice.” Mike says.
They continue talking about other topics, when suddenly Claire asks: “Mom and dad are coming today, right? It’s TJ’s birthday party.”
The three Bright siblings all stop what they were doing and they give each other a concerned and sad look.
“We don’t know, Claire…” TJ says.
“But they’ll miss your birthday!” Claire protests.
TJ tries to give Claire a reassuring smile, but fails.
“I’m sure they’ll be here. Maybe they’re doing a surprise.” Jack says, trying to lift the spirits up.
TJ sighs. “It's not like they haven't done it before...” He says.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
After they finished eating, Jack went to the stables to take care of the horses. After a little while, Mikell arrives as well.
“They’re magnificent…” Mike says, looking at the horses. “You want one?” Mike offers Jack a cigarette.
“Yes, thank you.” Jack says, then takes the cigarette and the lighter.
“Do you think something happened to them? Three years is a long time...” Jack says, preoccupied.
Mike sighs, then he shrugs his shoulders. “I have no idea. I wish I knew, but…” Mike lets out a puff of smoke.
The two siblings walk out of the stables, going to sit under a tree. As they sit down, Mike says: “Do you wanna tell me about the tattoo artist?”
Jack looks at him, smiling. “He’s amazing, and beautiful, and charming. His name is Simon. I feel like I want to know every single part of him.” They say, dreamingly.
Mike smiles. “I’m happy for you. Even though he rejected you, he still could become a good friend.”
Jack sighs. “Yeah…”
Mike looks at them, worryingly. “He didn’t reject you because of you, Jack. I’m sure of it. There’s nothing wrong with you. He must have had his reasons.” Mike pulls Jack in a hug.
“I know, I know.” Jack says, hugging Mikell back.
After a few seconds, Mike pulls away from the hug, and he stands up. “We better start preparing for the party.”
Jack stands up as well, and they go towards the house.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At about 11 p.m., the party was over. TJ had gone out with his friends to pass the night together, while Mikell and Jack stayed home with Claire and Sarah.
“They didn’t come…” Jack says, putting Sarah to sleep.
Mike lets out a long sigh. “They didn’t…” he looks out of the window for a while, then adds: “We should try and call them.”
Jack gives him a sad look. “They never answer.” They say.
“Trying won’t hurt.” Mike tries to sound reassuring.
Jack looks at Sarah, then nods. The two of them go into the living room, and Mike dials their parents’ phone number. The phone rings for a few minutes, but no one picks it up.
“Told you…” Jack says.
Mike puts down the phone. “TJ must be heart-broken.”
Jack looks sad. Why did they suddenly stop coming home even for the weekends? Even for their birthdays?
Mike stands up. “I’m going to bed. Goodnight.” And he leaves the room.
“Night…” Jack says. They lie down on the sofa, thinking. Suddenly, Jack receives a notification. They immediately sit up, hoping it would be their parents. Much to their surprise, it was Simon.
“Hey Jack, it’s Simon. This is the right number, right?” The message read.
“Yup. Don't worry, you didn’t message a complete stranger” Jack replies.
“Thank goodness.”
Jack feels a bit happier, now that they are talking to Simon.
“You had your brother’s birthday party today, right?” Simon wrote.
“Yes”
“How did it go?”
“Mostly good. Now he went out with his friends”
“You stayed home?”
“I didn’t wanna leave my other brother to take care of our sisters”ù
“Sisters? How many of you are there?”
“5 including me”
“Well, we’re four in my family so I can’t really comment.”
Jack smiles. So, Simon has a big family too, huh?
“How did your studying go?” Jack asked, hoping to keep the conversation going.
“As good as studying can go”
“Understandable”
“I’m starting to get tired. I’m going to bed now. See you on Monday, then?”
“Of course. Wouldn’t miss it for the world”
Jack smiles as they put their phone on charge, and they start heading to bed. The conversation with Simon managed to make them happier, and now they couldn’t wait to see him on Monday.
With these thoughts occupying their mind, Jack went to sleep peacefully.
Notes:
I hope you like the fact that I'm changing POV each chapter. It really helps me to get a clearer idea of what both Simon and Jack are thinking.
Chapter Text
It’s Monday now, and as per usual Simon went to the tattoo parlor in the afternoon to work, even though he would have preferred going back home, especially after he had an exam that morning. After about half an hour he was in the shop, the door opened.
Simon, without looking up from his book, says “Welcome to our shop. Are you here for a tattoo or to get a piercing?”
“Please, keep those devilish needles away from me.” The person says.
Simon looks up, recognizing the voice. “Oh D, sorry. I didn’t realize it was you.”
Diogenes, Simon’s best friend, smiles. “Awful costumer service, really. Not even looking up from your book.”
Simon groans. “I know, I know. I’m just tired.”
Diogenes walks behind the counter to sit down beside Simon. “Could tell from your awful eyebags. How did the exam go?” Diogenes asks.
“I hope good. But I’m not sure…” Simon says, lowering his head on the book.
“Don’t do that! You did amazing, I’m sure of it.” Diogenes, says, giving Simon a small smack on his head.
“Ouch!” Simon winces.
“Sorry… too hard?” Diogenes asks, massaging the spot they smacked.
“No, don’t worry.” Simon says, smiling.
“How long do you work today?” Diogenes asks.
“Two hours. I still have an hour and a half left.” Simon answers, groaning.
“Then you have the date with the flower dude, right?” Diogenes asks, winking.
“For the last time, we’re not dating.” Simon says, exasperation in his voice.
“Aw man, they seem nice from what you told me.”
“They are. I’m just… scared.” Simon admits, looking down.
Diogenes looks at him, the smile they were displaying before was now fully gone. “I’m sorry… I was joking… shouldn’t have…”
“No really, don’t worry.” Simon says, smiling a bit.
“At least I’m happy you’ve got another friend. Seriously, you always only hang out with me. You don’t even wanna go out when my boyfriend comes.” Diogenes says, trying to lift the spirits up a bit.
Simon laughs. “What’s wrong in having a small circle? This is discrimination against introverts.” Simon gives Diogenes a small punch on the arm.
“I’m not discriminating anyone. I’m just saying you need to get out of your little bubble.” Diogenes says.
“Yeah…” Simon says, passing a hand though his hair. “I wanted to ask you… could you come with us today?”
Diogenes looks at Simon. “Seriously? What am I now, your wingman… wing person… it’s a term right?” Diogenes asks.
“Don’t know. If it isn’t, just coin it yourself.” Simon says, laughing. “So… will you come? Pretty please?” Simon asks again, giving Diogenes a sad and pleading look.
“Fine, fine! But I can’t stay long.” Diogenes finally agrees, letting out a sigh.
“Great! Thanks!” Simon says, smiling.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
An hour and a half after, Simon starts packing his stuff up to leave. “Jack should be here any moment now.” Simon says, looking at his phone.
Almost as they had read his mind, Jack walks in the shop, and waves at Simon, who waves back. “Hiya Simon.” They say, smiling.
“Hey Jack.” Simon answers, returning the smile. “Oh, this is Diogenes, my best friend.” Simon says, pointing at Diogenes.
“Hi! I’m Jack.” Jack says, extending their hand.
“I’m Diogenes, but you can call me D.” Diogenes shakes Jack hand. “I go by they/them." They suddenly lower their voice. "And if you try to hurt Simon, I’ll make sure you won’t see the light of day again.” Diogenes says, still smiling.
Jack freezes, and Simon goes to smack Diogenes’ arm. “D! Stop that!” He says, giving them a stern look.
“Oh, really it’s nothing. Not the first time I’ve met an overprotective best friend.” Jack says, laughing nervously.
“Great. Shall we go?” Diogenes asks, already walking out the door.
“Wait, they’re coming with us?” Jack asks, whispering, to Simon.
“Oh, well… t-they asked me if I could go out with them. I said I was already going with you, and they asked if they could come as well.” Simon says, all in one breath. “Is that okay?”
“Oh, yeah, sure.” Jack answers. “It’s just that they’re a bit scary.” Jack says, shacking a bit.
“Don’t worry, they won’t actually kill you. They’re actually really nice, once you’ve known them.” Simon says, laughing.
“If you say so…” Jack says.
Simon smiles again, and he walks out of the shop, followed by Jack.
The three of them soon arrived at the park. They decide to get something to eat, and they go by the lake to sit down. In the meanwhile, Diogenes and Jack started talking, and Jack found they had more in common with D than they thought. Once they were at the lake, they sat down to eat what they bought.
After a few minutes, Diogenes looked at their phone.
“Ah fuck.” They say, as they put down the phone. “My shift starts soon. Sorry, I really have to go.” Diogenes says, standing up.
“It’s fine don’t worry.” Simon says, standing up as well. He hugs Diogenes, who, after waving goodbye at Jack, starts going away.
“Where do they work?” Jack asks Simon once he sat back down.
“In a restaurant. It’s near the city center.” Simon says.
“Oh, that’s cool! I love cooking.” Jack says, excitement in their eyes.
“Oh, they don’t cook. They’re a server.” Simon explains, chuckling a bit at Jack’s frown.
“Well, too bad for them.” Jack says, going back to eating their ice cream.
After a few seconds of silence, where Simon was trying to think of what to talk about, Jack speaks again.
“You said you’re studying psychology, right?” At Simon nod, Jack continues. “Why did you choose that faculty?” Jack asks, curious.
Simon thinks for a little bit. He knows why he chose those studies, but does he want to tell Jack the reason now? It took him almost two years of knowing D before telling them everything.
“Oh, well… I just wanna help people, I guess…” Simon says, sounding less sure than he was hoping.
Jack probably noticed that, because they were now smiling softly. “It’s ok if you don’t want to open up immediately. I understand. But just know that you can tell me anything, if you need and want to. There’s no need to be afraid.” Jack mumbles, putting their hand on Simon’s.
Simon lets out a small sigh, before smiling as well. Jack had a way of making him feel safe. “Thank you.” Simon murmurs, so softly Jack barely heard him. “It’s just that I haven’t made new friends in a long time.” Simon adds.
“Me neither. I’ve just been stuck with the same two friends for I don’t know how long.” Jack says, laughing, making Simon laughs as well.
“Well…” Simon says, trying to continue the conversation. “Why have you opened a flower shop?” Simon asks.
“I actually haven’t opened it myself.” Jack answers. “I worked there while I was in high school to make some money. Then, when the owner retired, he asked me if I wanted the shop for myself. Of course, I said yes.” Then they lower their voice. “But Mike, my older brother, isn’t happy, He says that I make too little money.” Then they sigh, talking even lower, almost to themselves. “It’s hard when it’s only me and Mike bringing money home.”
Simon doesn’t say anything. Jack said they lived with their parents, didn’t they? “If Jack didn’t tell me anything, they probably don’t feel comfortable saying anything.” Simon thinks.
“What time is it?” Jack suddenly asks.
“U-uhm… 7:30… already?” Simon says, disbelief in his voice. “The park closes in half an hour. Uhm… we could go to the center, before going back home.” Simon suggests, slightly nervous.
Jack smiles. “Sure.”
Then the two of them started walking out of the park, chatting on their way out.

Sorry I haven't updated in a while, I had a few exams at school.
Chapter 5: Realizations
Chapter Text
It’s now October, and it’s been a few months since Jack and Simon first met. These months they hung out together often, getting to know each other better. And, despite Jack was trying really hard to stop their feelings for Simon, every time they found out something more about the blonde man, they fell in love even more. But realistically, how could anyone stop loving someone as amazing as Simon Glass?
“Did I tell you that he speaks French?” Jack says dreamingly, laying down on their friend’s couch.
Ben groans, throwing a pillow at Jack. “Drop the lovey-dovey talk.”
Jack catches the pillow before it could it them. “Says the one cuddling his partner.” Jack replies.
“This is not cuddling. This is just Alto being a little shit who knows nothing about personal space.” Ben says, trying again (and failing) to get Alto off his lap. This just resulted in Alto making a hissing sound, and getting even more comfortable on Ben’s lap.
“Jackiee, when are we going to meet your Romeo?” Alto asks, changing subject before Ben could try and shove them away.
“Never.” Jack says immediately.
“Come on, man!” Alto replies, sounding displeased. “Why not?”
“Because you’re gonna traumatize him!” Jack says, giving the pair a stern look.
“You’re exaggerating.” Ben says, returning the look.
“No, I’m not.” Jack replies. “Ben, you’re too direct and pessimistic. And Alto… you’re too much in general.”
Alto gasps, putting a hand on his heart. “I’m sorry?” He says this with the most theatrical voice he could make. “You’re embarrassed of us?” Alto continues, now pretending to cry.
“Okay Alto, a bit too much now.” Ben says, patting his partner’s head.
“Why am I even friends with you?” Jack groans, lying back down.
But Jack knows why they’re friends with Alto and Ben, and that’s exactly why they don’t want Simon to meet the two. Jack has avoided talking about high school as much as possible. They feel a little bit bad, since Simon has told them some of his very embarrassing moments in high school. But Jack just felt so miserable during high school, that they want to avoid the topic whenever they can. In fact, they met Alto and Ben because all the three of them felt the same way. Defending yourself from the bullies was easier when there were other two people you could count on. And Jack absolutely loves and cares for their two best friends, but them meeting Simon means a fragile part of Jack getting exposed. And no, they don’t want that.
“So, how’s it going with him? Chances of you two getting together?” Alto asks again.
Jack sighs, and they close their eyes, murmuring a no.
Ben places a hand on Jack’s knee. “D’you think he might like you?” He asks.
Jack sighs again. “I don’t know. He never flirted, or at least I didn’t notice it. And he blushes always, it’s hard to understand if he likes me or not.” Jack says, putting a hand on their face.
“Let me give you an advice.” Alto starts saying.
“I don’t really think I should listen to your relationship advices, unless I wanna end up in a mess of an on and off relationship like yours.” Jack hisses, opening a bit their hand to look at their friends.
In response, Alto just sticks out her tongue while Ben gives them the middle finger.
“Just try and understand if he’s sending any signal.” Ben says. “And don’t do anything too rush.”
“Says the 24 years old man with a 6 years old chi- ouch!” Alto says, receiving a slap on the neck before it could finish the sentence.
Jack sighs again, this time with exasperation.
“Just respect his boundaries. If he says no, it’s no.” Ben says, glaring a bit at Alto, who just chuckles and gives him a peck on the lips.
“I’m sure one day he’ll love you. I mean, who wouldn’t.” Alto says, finally getting off Ben to give Jack a kiss on the lips as well.
“Gross.” Jack laughs, moving Alto’s face away with their hand.
“You’re grounded.” Ben says, as soon as Alto is back in hirs original spot.
“The fuck does that mean?” Alto asks. “I’m your partner, not your child.”
“Next time don’t kiss Jack while we’re dating.” Ben says, glaring at Alto, who just pouts in response.
Jack laughs again. “This is exactly why I don’t want you to meet Simon.”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Simon knocks on the door. “Come on in!” A voice from inside says.
Simon walks inside dr. Rivera’s office. The young woman smiles as he walks inside.
“Hi Simon, how are you doing?” She asks as Simon sits on the couch in front of her chair.
“Quite good actually, dr. Rivera.” Simon answers, returning the smile.
“That’s good to hear.” She says, taking out her notes. “It’s always nice seeing you smile.”
Simon smiles again. “And it feels nice too.” He says, laughing.
“Say, why so cheerful today?” Rivera asks. “You’re meeting Jack?”
Simon blushes a little, smiling even more. “Yeah…”
Rivera giggles. “I’m so happy you’ve found someone you like.”
Simon blushes more. “I-I… I don’t like them!” He says quickly. “It’s just friendship. Yup, we’re just friends.”
Rivera looks at him softly. “Sure Simon… you know, there’s nothing wrong in falling in love again.” She says, a more serious tone in her voice.
Simon stiffens. He opens his mouth to reply, but closes it almost immediately.
“We already talked about this. You need to leave Liam in the past.” Rivera says. “I know it’s difficult. But don’t hide away your feelings because of what happened. You deserve happiness, Simon.”
Simon stays silent. He knows he has to leave everything behind. But… what if Jack isn’t what they seem? What if something like last time happens?
Rivera puts her hand on Simon’s. “Simon… it’s gonna be okay. What matters is that you feel safe around Jack, that they make you feel comfortable.” She smiles again. “You told me you only ever felt safe like this with your siblings and Diogenes. There’s something special about this person.”
Simon smiles a bit. “I guess there is…”
“Listen to your heart.” Rivera says. “I know you’re prone to overthinking. Try and ignore those thoughts. We practiced, didn’t we?”
Simon smiles again.
“But let’s clear this. I’m just suggesting you might like them. You’re the only judge in that.” She says, sitting back in her chair. “Take your time. Understand your feelings.”
Simon nods. “I’ll try.”
River smiles. “Good.” Then, she checks her clock. “We still have time left. Let’s continue the session, shall we?” She asks.
Simon smiles. “Sure.”
Chapter 6: Halloween
Notes:
I changed the amout of time Jack's parents haven't came home. I already changed it in chapter two. Also this chapter was supposed to come out near Halloween, but I didn't have much time to write recently, and this was a fairly long chapter.
Chapter Text
Today’s Halloween. Simon is sitting in his room: he just put on some makeup for Halloween, and is now deciding between two shirts to wear tonight. There’s a knock on the door. “Come in.” Simon says. Charles comes in the room.
“You’re going out tonight, right?” He asks, and Simon nods. “I’m going to the cinema. I’ll be at Ellis’ afterwards.” He adds.
“Mhm. Good for you.” Simon replies with a flat voice.
Charles raises an eyebrow. “Are you alright?” He asks, sitting down beside Simon.
“Yeah. I just don’t know which shirt to pick.” Simon says.
“Okay… I think you look better in the turtleneck. I mean, if you want to make an impression on your friend.” Charles says.
Simon goes red immediately. “I don’t want to make an impression on anyone!” He quickly says.
Charles just looks at him, no emotions on his face. “Okay.” He says, standing up to go towards the door. “I just wanted to say that, as your older brother, I’ll be happy if you find someone. I’ll see you tomorrow.” He says, closing the door behind him as he leaves the room.
Simon sighs, trying to understand when Charles stopped being oblivious. But it didn’t matter now, since it was getting late. Simon picks the black turtleneck up, and goes in search of some jeans, putting them on. Then, he goes towards the bus station.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When Jack hears a knock on the door, they’re ready with the box of candies. They open the door, expecting to see a bunch of kids in costume. Instead, on the porch there’s Simon, who smiles at them.
“Happy Halloween.” He says. Jack sees that he’s wearing eyeliner – which, by the way, looked very good on him – and he has a spider’s web drawn on the up-left part of his face.
“Hey Simon. Come on in.” Jack greets him, opening the door for him to enter.
“Woah. I love how you decorated.” Simon says, a sparkle in his eyes.
“Well yeah. We take holydays very seriously in this house.” Jack says laughing, closing the door.
“Aw. We never really decorate our house, me and my brother.” Simon says. “He thinks it’s a waste of time and money. I disagree, but the house is his after all.” Simon says, looking around.
“You can hang your coat up here.” Jack says, showing Simon the coat rack.
Simon takes off his coat, as well as his scarf. He’s wearing a black turtleneck with a white cardigan. He looks very good in it.
“You look really good.” Jack whispers, just loud enough for Simon to hear.
Simon blushes, looking down. “Thank you.” He says, looking back up and smiling. “You look good too.”
Jack smiles and blushes as well. “Thanks…”
They look at each other for a little while, when Simon breaks the silence. “Uhm… are we gonna eat in?” He asks.
“Oh, yeah!” Jack answers, going towards the kitchen, followed by Simon. “I made food.” They say, turning towards Simon to smile.
“Let’s just hope no one gets poisoned.” Mike says, who was already inside the kitchen.
Jack sticks out their tongue at Mike, who just rolls his eyes.
“I’m Mike, by the way.” He says, shacking hands with Simon. “Jack’s brother. You’re Simon, right?”
“Yes. Pleasure to meet you.” Simon says, smiling. Mike returns the smile.
Simon then looks behind Mike’s legs, where there Sarah, Jack’s younger sister, drinking water.
“And who’s the little one?” Simon asks, smiling at Sarah, who smiles as well.
“Sarah. She’s our sister.” Jack answers, taking Sarah’s glass before she threw it to the ground.
“She’s adorable.” Simon says, waving at the little girl. “How old is she?” He asks.
“She’s three.” Mike answers. “Well, it’s time for her to go to bed.” He says, picking Sarah up.
“Goodnight, princess.” Jack says, rubbing their nose on Sarah’s, who laughs.
As Mike walks out the room, Jack starts setting the table.
“You look like an adorable family.” Simon says.
Jack stops for a moment with the glasses in their hand. “Yeah…” they say, not looking at Simon.
“So, there’s gonna be me, you, your brother and who else for dinner?” Simon asks, picking up the plates.
“There will be TJ – you know, my brother who came to your shop to get a tattoo – and my sister Claire.” Jack answers, taking the plates from Simon’s hand.
“Come on, I wanna help. You don’t have to do everything.” Simon protests.
“No, you’re a guest. It’s my duty.” Jack says, winking, at which Simon’s cheeks go a bit red.
“Your parents won’t be here?” Simon asks.
Jack stops again, looking – and feeling – sad. “N-no… they’re… at a date! Yeah, a date…” Jack lies. The truth will come out, just not tonight.
Simon doesn’t look convinced, but he doesn’t push it. “You picked a movie to watch?” He asks instead, changing subject.
Jack grins. “Of course. I picked the scariest horror movie of all time.” They say, trying to sound scary.
“Sure…” Simon says, laughing.
“You’re making fun of me.” Jack says, stepping in front of Simon.
“No, I’m not.” Simon says, trying not to laugh. He turns his head, covering his mouth with his hands.
“Yes, you are!” Jack says, placing their hand on his hips.
When Simon turns his head, they both realize how close they are. Jack immediately steps back. Simon looks down, his face a shade of red that matches Jack’s hair.
“Good God, kids are scary.” A voice breaks the awkward moment. TJ enters the kitchen, followed by Claire. “This is the last time I’m taking Claire trick-or-treating. Kids are mean.” He says, shivering a bit. Claire just laughs.
“We told you, but you were like ‘no it’s not true! Kids are amazing!’. Are they still?” Jack asks teasingly.
TJ just glares at them. Then, he realizes that Simon is there as well, and his face relaxes. “Oh, hi Simon!”
“Hi TJ.” Simon says. Claire, when she heard Simon’s name, pokes her head in the kitchen.
“You’re the guy Jack always talks about.” She says.
Jack turns red. “Okay, you little devil. Let’s go take your costume off.” Jack says, not looking at Simon, who was blushing as well.
Jack and Claire go upstairs to get changed.
“Why did you tell him that??” Jack asks immediately when they reach Claire’s bedroom.
“Because it’s true. You said you like him. If he knows, you’ll be together and happy!” Claire says, smiling.
Jack sighs as they search for clothes. “It’s not that easy when you’re grown up, Claire. People might not feel the same way as you, and might not want to be with you.” Jack says, starting to take Claire’s costume off.
“I think he likes you. He was red, like you when you talk about him.” Claire says.
Jack smiles a bit at the thought of Simon liking them back. Then they turn to Claire. “I hope it’s true, because I’m planning on confessing to him some time soon.” Jack admits.
Claire smiles even more. “I’m gonna have another big brother!” She says happily.
Jack laughs, ruffling Claire’s hair. When they finished changing Claire into her pajamas, they started going downstairs with her.
“Let’s eat, shall we?” Jack says when they came into the kitchen.
Simon turns at them, smiling and nodding.
The dinner goes normal. Everyone’s talking, and Jack is so happy Simon is getting along with their siblings.
When they finished eating, Mike took Claire to bed, and Jack went to find the DVD that they were planning to watch.
“DVDs? I haven’t used them in ages.” Simon says, sitting down on the couch, soon followed by TJ.
“Yup. We don’t have any streaming service.” Jack says. “They cost too much…” This last part is mumbled, and Simon doesn’t hear it.
When Mike joins the three of them, Jack has put the DVD in the player. Jack then sits on the couch beside Simon.
“If you feel scared, you can hold my hand.” Jack says winking at Simon.
Simon laughs. “Actually, I don’t get scared that easily with horror movies.” Simon says, smirking at Jack.
“Alright then. We’ll see.” Jack says, and they start the movie.
The movie starts, and everything is normal at first. That is until the first jump scare comes on, and Jack lets out a scream, turning their head and hiding their face with their hands.
Mike laughs. “Come on Mike, you’re making a bad impression.” Mike teases.
“Shut up.” Jack says, voice muffled through their hands.
Simon laughs. “I guess you’re the one who needs their hand held.” Simon jokes, taking Jack’s hand out of their face.
Jack blushes. “No, I’m fine. I was just taken out of guard.” They say, ignoring the laughs coming from their brothers.
As the movie progressed, it seemd as Jack had never watched a horror movie before, since they kept trembling, and at one point, they hid their face in the crook of Simon’s neck, causing the latter to freeze up.
Suddenly, during a suspense-filled scene, someone knocks at the door. Jack screams again.
“It’s the door, idiot.” Mike says, stopping the movie. “It’s probably some kids trick-or-treating.” He says, as he stands up and goes for the door.
TJ turns around on the couch towards the door, and Jack lets out a sigh.
“This movie is gonna be the end of me.” Jack says, dramatically.
Before Simon can answer, Mike basically yells: “What are you doing here?!”
Jack and Simon turn as well, seeing as TJ froze up. As Jack looks towards the door, they can see two people standing on the porch. At first, they can’ recognize them, but as they keep looking, they recognize the m.
“Mum…” “… and dad…” Jack and TJ say, finishing each other’s sentence.
“Mike… listen…” Adam starts saying.
“I don’t wanna hear it!” Mike snaps.
“Mike please calm down…” Evelyn tries talking, but she’s stopped by Mike as well.
“You can’t just show up after three years like it’s nothing. Go. Away.” Mike says, and Jack could tell that he was about to cry.
“Three years…?” Simon asks. Jack turns towards him, and they see the confused and worried look on his face. Jack doesn’t answer, instead standing up and going to the door as well.
“Jack!” Adam says, almost sounding relieved.
“Why are you here?” Jack just asks.
“Listen Jack… you’re mad, you’re right… but it’s been a difficult few years and…” Adam tries to explain, but fails again, being interrupted by Mike.
“And you think any explanation you have is gonna excuse you leaving your infant daughter with her siblings with no money?!” Mike cries, holding back his tears.
“Mike…” Jack says, putting their hand on his shoulder.
“No Jack. We’re not forgiving them.” Mike said, anger in his voice.
“I’m not saying that… but maybe we should listen to them…” Jack tries to reason with Mike, which ends up being useless.
“I… don’t wanna hear it.” Mike says, his eyes starting to water.
“Mike, Jack… please just let us in and let us explain…” Evelyn tries putting a hand on her son’s shoulder, but Mike’s shoves it away.
“Please go…” Mike whispers, going to close the door.
“Mike, honey, please…” Adam blocks the door from closing.
Jack doesn’t know what to say. It’s been three years since they’ve seen their parents, and they just want to fall into their arms… to be hugged. They can think about them leaving them alone later. But Mike doesn’t seem to agree with them. As they look at Mike as he keeps arguing, Jack tries to talk to him, but it’s no use.
“Jack…” Jack turns around at Simon’s small whisper, and they see TJ crying, his head in his arms.
“TJ…” Jack goes to sit beside TJ, and they hug him.
“I don’t wanna see them…” TJ whispers.
Jack has to keep themselves from crying as well. They look at Mike, and then at Simon, who’s looking at them with a worried look on his face.
“Let’s get out of the house, okay?” Jack whispers, as they keep holding TJ.
“You can come to my place… if you need…” Simon suggests.
Jack looks at Mike again, then they nod. “Thank you.”
Jack, TJ and Simon get out of the living room, as the argument keeps going.
“We have a back door…” Jack quietly says.
The three of them get out of the house, and get in the car.
“I’ll drive.” Simon says.
“No really it’s fine…” Jack tries to protest, but Simon is already in the driver’s seat.
“The keys?” He asks.
Jack sits in the rear passenger seat, near TJ, and gives the keys to Simon. Simon starts the car, and TJ lies down on Jack’s lap.
“My brother won’t be home tonight, if you want you can stay to sleep.” Simon suggests.
“If we won’t be a bother…” Jack says, smiling sadly.
“Of course, not…” Simon says.
The drive to Simon’s house is silent, and the only sounds are the occasional sniffles from TJ.
When they arrive, they go inside the house.
“You can sleep in my room. I’ll go in my brother’s room.” Simon says.
Jack just looks at him, smiling to themselves as they realize how lucky they are that they have met someone as amazingly nice as Simon.
“Thank you…” Jack says again.
Simon just smiles.
“I’ll go lie down…” TJ says. “Good… night…” He says.
“Good night.” Jack says, giving their brother a kiss on the head.
“I’ll show you the room.” Simon says, going towards a room.
When TJ and Simon exit the room, Jack starts looking around. Simon has a really nice house. Kinda expensive, it seems. As Jack is looking around, everything that happened starts to come back to them all at once. Jack starts feeling overwhelmed, and decides to go out to get some fresh air.
After a while that Jack was in the garden, they took out a cigarette from their pocket. As soon as they lit it, they heard Simon coming out.
“You know it’s bad for your health, right?” Simon says, sitting down on the small bench beside Jack.
Jack just lets out a small puff of smoke, without answering.
“Do you want to talk about anything?” Simon asks.
Jack closes their eyes, and just thinks for a moment. “Yeah…” They eventually answer.
Simon puts his hand on Jack’s, and just smiles. Jack sighs.
“Okay so… my parents always had a job that required them to stay long time there.” Jack starts. “But… after some time… they started coming back home less and less often…” Jack’s voice trembles, and Simon squeezes their hand. “Not only that. The less often they would come home, the less money they would bring… and so we had to find ways of gaining our own money. But…” Jack takes a deep breath. “After our sister Sarah was born… they stopped coming home all together. And… we had to start finding ways of gaining money and take care of our siblings.” Jack says this last part while trying to hold back the tears.
“I’m so sorry.” Simon says. He stays silent for a while, then he hugs Jack.
As soon as Jack feels Simon’s arms around them, they start crying. They just stay there for a while, holding each other.
“I’m here if you need me…” Simon whispers softly. “And if you need, I know quite a good number of psychologists that you could meet.”
“Thank you…” is all Jack manages to say. Jack confirms their thought of earlier: they are very lucky to have Simon in their life.
“We should go to bed.” Simon says.
“I guess…” Jack answers.
“You’re so strong…” Simon says, giving a last hug to Jack.
The two of them then go back inside, and Jack starts going towards where TJ went before.
“Good night.” Simon says, smiling.
“Night.” Jack says, returning the smile.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Simon wakes up to the sound of the clinking in the kitchen. He stretches, and goes in the kitchen. When he goes there, he sees Charles.
“Oh, good morning Charles!” Simon says, smiling at his brother.
“Good morning.” He says. “Is someone else here?”
“Oh, yeah, Jack and their brother are here. There have been… complications, yesterday. They slept in my room.” Simon says.
Charles just nods.
Simon starts preparing breakfast for himself as well. Then, Jack and TJ arrive in the kitchen.
“Good morning.” Simon says, smiling.
“Good morning.” Charles says as well.
“Oh, this is my brother, Charles. Charles, these are Jack and TJ.” Simon presents everyone.
“Hello, nice to meet you.” Jack says, holding out their hand for Charles, who shakes it.
“I think we should go…” TJ says.
“Oh, right. Well, thank you for everything.” Jack says, looking at Simon.
“You don’t wanna stay for breakfast?” Simon asks.
“No really… we should go… we already bothered you enough.” Jack says, smiling.
“Alright…” Simon says, not feeling great about letting Jack back to their house. “Well, I’ll see you soon, then.” Simon says.
“Yeah… see you.” Jack smiles, and starts going towards the door.
“Wait!” Simon says, going towards Jack and TJ. “Please take care. Call me if you need anything.” Simon softly says. Then, he gives Jack a small peck on the cheek. “Bye.”
“U-uh… bye…” Jack says, blushing, and then them and TJ go out of the house.
“They like you.” Charles simply says, still drinking his coffee.
“W-what?” Simon asks, turning around blushing.
“I’m just saying. You two would be a nice couple.” Charles says, voice as blank as humanly possible.
Simon just blushes more, turning back to his breakfast. “O-oh…” It’s all he manages to say.
Chapter Text
“Are you sure you wanna go home?” Jack asks TJ as they’re going back home.
TJ just nods.
Jack sighs “Alright.” Will their parents still be home? They haven’t heard anything from Mike… Jack just hopes nothing bad happened.
Once they arrive home, Jack notices two cars they don’t know. “They must still be here…” Jack thinks. Then they turn to TJ. “If you don’t wanna talk to them it’s fine…” they say.
“It’s not that. It’s just…” TJ sighs. “I got scared when Mike started yelling at mum and dad. I don’t like people screaming.” He says, giving his sibling a faint smile.
“Alright bud…” Jack says, messing TJ’s hair. Then, they get out of the car, and into the house.
“Hi Jack…” Jack hears their father says as soon as they set foot into the house. “Hi TJ…” he continues.
“You’re still here.” Jack says, not looking at their father.
“I’m going upstairs.” TJ whispers to Jack, and he just leaves the living room.
“Mike let us stay…” Adam explains. “He says we can stay for a while… for the girls, especially.” He tries to give Jack a smile, but they just turn their head.
Then, a man enters the room as well. Jack never saw him, but they can swear he looks just like Simon. They have very similar curly, blond hair, and even if Simon’s features are softer, they’re basically identical to the mysterious man.
“Thanks for letting me stay Adam… I’ll go now, I don’t wanna intrude.” The man says.
“Alright Oggie. I’ll see you.” Adam says, smiling.
“Drop the nickname, Bright.” The man – Oggie? – says, sounding exasperated. “See you.” He says, going towards the door and completely ignoring Jack.
“Bye bye!” Adam says, smiling. “That was my coworker. He couldn’t find any hotels yesterday, so he asked if he could stay here as well.”
“Oh…” Jack says, fidgeting with their pockets. “I should go, I have work…” they say.
“Wait Jack.” Adam says, stepping towards Jack. “I’m sorry…. We’re sorry…” Adam starts.
“I’m not gonna forgive you if that’s what you’re expecting.” Jack says, keeping an impassive face.
“I’m not asking you to. I’m just… want you to know I’m sorry, and that I love you. You’re my son, I could I not?” He says, giving Jack a sad smile.
Jack stiffens. They never told their father that they’re genderfluid. “Not son. Kid.” Jack just says, then they leave the room, going to their room to get ready for work.
They get changed quickly, and then they let out a long sigh. No, today is not the day for Jack to confront their parents. Maybe another day. Or maybe never.
And while Jack was lost in those thoughts, someone knocks on their door. “Who’s there?” Jack asks.
“It’s Mike.” Mike says.
“Come in.” Jack says.
Mike opens the door and comes into the room. “Everything’s alright?” He asks.
Jack nods. “Sorry for leaving you.” They say, looking at their brother, who just shrugs his shoulders.
“It’s fine. I understand why.” He says, then he looks almost guilty. “I’m sorry… I decided to let them in… for Sarah and Claire… they miss them.” Mike says, sounding sorry.
“It’s fine. I understand. I mean, maybe it’ll be better for us as well.” Jack tries a smile.
“Mhm… I need to go now.” Mike says. “I’ll come back Saturday. It’s fine by you?” Mike asks before leaving the room.
“Of course. Good luck at work.” Jack says, hugging their brother tightly.
“You too.” Mike says, breaking the hug. “Bye.” He says, then he leaves the room.
Jack’s smile suddenly drops. They don’t want Mike to leave. Not now. They don’t want to be the eldest right now. They sigh again, and they go downstairs, where fortunately there isn’t anyone. Then, they go to the car to go to work.

The door of the shop opens, and Simon looks up from the book he was reading.
“Hey Simon.” Jack says, entering with a smile. “I was going to grab something to eat, you wanna come?” They ask.
“Sure Jack. Let me just grab my things.” Simon says, placing a bookmark in the book.
“What’cha reading?” Jack asks, going towards the counter.
“My Year of Rest and Relaxation, by Ottessa Moshfegh.” Simon answers. “I just started reading it. It’s kinda weird, but I’m liking it.” Simon says, putting the book in his bag. “Where are we going?” He asks Jack.
“I was thinking we could buy something from the bakery and then eat it on the benches here.” Jack suggests.
“Sounds good to me.” Simon says, walking to the door. “Shall we go?”
“Sure.” Jack says, walking out the door, soon followed by Simon.
After they bought a sandwich, Simon and Jack sit on one of the benches outside their shops.
“How did it go after you left?” Simon asks Jack.
Jack looks away for a second, and Simon places his hand on their shoulder. “Alright I guess.” They answer. “They tried… giving excuses… I just ignored them.” Jack says, looking down.
“It’s completely normal if you don’t want to talk to them now. Hell, you don’t have to forgive or talk to them ever again if you don’t feel like it.” Simon says, giving Jack’s shoulder a squeeze.
“I don’t know what I wanna do.” Jack confesses. “I don’t know if I wanna forgive them… because I missed them...” Jack says, slouching in the bench.
“Take your time, Jack. Don’t rush things. Do things when you wanna do them, if you wanna do them.” Simon says.
“Thank you, Sim.” Jack says, smiling sadly.
“Sim?” Simon asks, laughing and blushing slightly.
“A nickname. I still haven’t given you one, and I normally give everyone nicknames.” Jack says, laughing as well.
“I like it.” Simon says.
“I’m glad.” Jack says, and they start eating their sandwich.
Simon stares at his sandwich, trying to think of a way to tell Jack what’s been bothering him for a few days.
“How do you tell someone you like them?” Simon murmurs, closing his eyes.
“What?” Jack asks, their eyes widening. “You like someone?” They ask.
Simon raises his head, and he looks at Jack. “I said that out loud…?” He asks, turning bright red.
Jack lets out a small laugh. “Yes, you did.” They say. “Who’s the lucky person?” They ask.
“No one.” Simon says, looking away.
“Come on, tell me!” Jack insists. “I won’t get jealous. I mean, I know I told you I kind liked you and stuff, but that’s in the past.” Jack says, though there was a hint of insecurity in their voice.
Simon felt a lump in his chest at Jack’s words. “It’s no one, really.” Simon says.
Jack looked at him for a few seconds. “If you say so.” They say, resuming eating their sandwich. “But to answer your question, I would say just tell them. Make it romantic though.” Jack says. “Or you could send them signs, but it may not work if they’re oblivious, or just dumb.” Jack suggests.
“Thank you…” Simon says, eating his sandwich as well. So, Jack didn’t like him now. Of course, they didn’t. “Why would they?” Simon thinks, trying to hold his tears back.
“You alright, Simon?” Jack asks, a bit preoccupied.
“Mhm.” Simon says, using his full-mouth as an excuse to not speak.
“Alright.” Jack says, though they didn’t sound convinced.
“I have to go.” Simon says, standing up. “I got classes. Goodbye.” He says, starting to leave.
“Oh. Bye!” Jack says, waving.
Simon starts walking towards the bus station, taking his phone out to call Diogenes.
“Yo Simon.” They answer immediately the phone.
“Hey D…” Simon says.
“Wait wait. Did you tell Jack you like them?” D asks.
“They don’t like me…” Simon just says.
“What? Wait, but you told them?” D asks again.
“I mean, no… but I asked them how to tell someone you like them… and they said that they wouldn’t get jealous if I liked someone because they don’t like me anymore…” Simon says, all in one breath.
“You absolute idiot.” D basically yells. “They still like you, it’s just that they thought you liked someone else, so they pretended to not like you.”
“Y-you think?” Simon asks, hope rising again.
“Yes Simon. Yes.” D says.
Simon smiles. “Thank you.” He says.
“Of course, Si. I have to go. See you.” D says.
“Bye.” Simon says, ending the call. He smiles again. “Tomorrow I’ll tell them.” Simon thinks.

I'll probably won't be able to post next week and the week after. I just have so many exams now that Christmas is coming. So next chapter will be after the nineteenth. Sorry for the delay.
Chapter Text
Simon thought that by now, he would’ve told Jack how he feels. But every time he met Jack, all of his courage disappeared. But today Simon feels like nothing will stop him from sharing his feelings. So, with this new-found faith in himself, he goes to Jack’s shop with a marigold in his hand. Simon knows absolutely nothing about flower meanings, but he knows that he isn’t allergic to marigolds, which given that he’s allergic to basically every other flower, it’s already something.
Simon stops in front of the shop, hoping Jack will see him. He never entered Jack’s shop, and he didn’t want an allergic reaction right now. He looks inside, and he sees Jack with someone. Simon have never seen them before, but he thinks they could be one of Jack’s friends. They have long blonde hair tied in a ponytail. Simon tries to wave to get Jack’s attention, but they aren’t looking towards the shop’s glass door.
Just as Simon was about to open the door, the blonde person suddenly throws themselves into Jack’s arms, and goes for a kiss on the lips, which Jack seems to dodge, getting a kiss on the cheek instead. Simon freezes. Was Jack dating someone? They never mentioned anyone. Not that they had to necessarily tell Simon, but…
Simon turns to walk away. He’s definitely not going to confess to Jack now. But as he’s walking away, he hears Jack call for him.
“Simon! How long have you been here? Sorry I didn’t see you.” Jack says.
Simon turns around, smiling. “Don’t worry! It’s fine.” Simon says, hiding the marigold in his pocket.
“You needed something?” Jack asks.
Simon stays silent, trying to find a reason to be there on his day off. “I-I just wanted to tell you... uhm... I’ve got a date!” Simon says the first thing that came to his mind.
Jack looks… surprised? Weren’t they trying to find out Simon’s crush these past few days? “Really? That’s… amazing, Simon!” Jack says, smiling.
Simon smiles as well, realizing that he put himself in an awful situation.
“So… who’s the date?” Jack asks.
Simon has now idea how to answer. “Oh… y-you don’t know them.” Simon says, laughing awkwardly.
Jack raises an eyebrow. “Do they have a name?” Jack asks.
Simon tries to thinks desperately of a name. How he’s gonna get out of this situation, he seriously doesn’t know. “Y-yeah, of course. Uhm… Elisa!” Simon says.
Jack smiles again, though this time it seems sadder. “I’m happy for you, Simon. I hope to meet them soon. I… have to go now… I can’t leave to shop like this, can I?” Jack says, laughing, but the laughter dies immediately. They look almost nervous, and Simon can’t quite understand why.
“Sure, of course. Well, I have the date in half an hour, so I’d better get going too.” Simon says, smiling.
“Sure… I’ll see you tomorrow.” Jack says, and goes back to the shop.
Simon waits until Jack is back into the shop, and then he goes away, starting to feel the tears coming out. He goes to the bus station. He knows that Diogenes is at work right now, but he also knows they’re about to finish the turn. So, he decides to go meet them, and tell them the absolute mess he’s got himself into. As Simon waits for the bus, he tries to hold the tears back. He hates crying in public. Fortunately, the bus arrives almost immediately.
When he arrives at the restaurant, Simon sees Diogenes out of the building, and it looks like they just finished work. They immediately see him, and they go towards him basically running.
“Simon, what happened?” They ask, worry in their voice.
Simon hugs them, finally crying. Diogenes hugs him back, and they go towards a bench to sit down. They don’t say anything, and they just wait for Simon to decide to speak.
“Jack is dating someone else…” Is all Simon says.
“Oh… Simon, I’m so sorry…” Diogenes says, hugging him tighter.
“And… well… I made a mess…” Simon says, hiding his face in Diogenes’ shoulder.
“What did you do?” Diogenes asks, stroking Simon’s back.
Simon stays silent for a while. “I told them I had a date… and now they think I’m dating someone else…”
Diogenes sighs. “Okay, two things. One, the next time I see Jack, I’m gonna punch them. Two, you’re an idiot.” Diogenes says.
“I know… but I got anxious, and I said the first thing that came to mind.” Simon says, looking up at Diogenes.
“At least it’s not unfixable. Just tell them the date didn’t go well.” Diogenes suggests.
“Well…” Simon whispers. “I… was actually thinking to find someone to actually date… I’m afraid Jack doesn’t believe me… and I kinda told them I would make them meet…” Simon says.
“Simon no. Fake-dating someone is an awful idea.” Diogenes says firmly.
Simon doesn’t say anything. He knows it’s a bad idea, but…
“You want to make them feel jealous.” Diogenes says, almost reading Simon’s mind. “Simon, it’s a bad idea. You shouldn’t do that.” Diogenes says again.
“Don’t you know anyone who would be willing do fake-date me?” Simon asks.
“Absolutely not.” Diogenes says, having no intention in changing their mind.
“Please, D… I swear it won’t be that bad…” Simon asks again.
Diogenes looks away. Simon knows he souldn't push the matter if Diogenes says it's a bad idea, but he really thinks it's the only way. “I may know someone… but I don’t know if she’ll be okay with that.” Diogenes says. “I’ll call her. But just know that I’m against this whole idea. I just want you to realize that. And maybe for Jack to realize some things too.”
“Nothing bad will happen. I promise.” Simon promises.
Diogenes still doesn’t seem convinced. “Let’s hope you’re right.” They just say.
“Thank you D…” Simon says, hugging them again, and Diogenes reaturns the hug.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As soon as Jack got back inside the shop, their smile dropped. So, Simon actually liked someone else. When Simon told them that he liked someone, Jack was hoping it would be them, and that he was just afraid to tell them.
“Jack? Is something wrong?” Alto asks, worried.
“No… everything's fine.” Jack says, going back to sort the flowers.
“Come on Jack, I know something’s wrong.” Alto insists.
“Simon’s got a date.” Jack says.
“Oh. And you didn’t know anything about it? Like, that he liked someone?” Alto asks.
“He… kinda told me… but… I thought he would’ve told me more before. Even when I asked for the name he didn’t wanna tell me.” Jack explains. “It’s just… if I liked someone, I would’ve told him.”
“Didn’t he say that he wasn’t ready to date when you asked him out?” Alto asks. “And now he’s just going out with some rando?”
Jack looks down. “It… was probably not true.” Jack says, starting to cry. “Maybe he didn’t even wanna be my friend… maybe he just felt bad…”
Jack starts crying, and Alto hugs them from behind. “If that’s true, he’s just an asshole.” Alto says. Then, she suddenly lets go of Jack. “I’ve got an idea.” Ey says. “He plays with your feelings? Let’s give him a taste of his medicine.” Alto says, a mischievous grin on thons face. “Let’s pretend we’re dating, and see how he likes it.” Alto suggests.
“That’s… a bad idea.” Jack says. “Also, Ben won’t like it.”
“Nah, he won’t care.” Alto says. “And I’ll take all responsibility if things go south.”
“Fine…” Jack agrees. “What’s your plan?” They ask.
“Tomorrow meet him, asks him how his date went, and then suggest a double date.” Alto explains. “Just say casually that you forgot to tell him you had a partner.” Stag adds.
Jack looks down. Do they really want to make Simon feel bad? Simon seems so nice, they still can’t understand why he would lie to them. “Okay, fine.” Jack says, smiling at Alto.
“Perfect.” Alto says. “I’ll tell Ben after.”
Jack smiles again. Is this probably a bad idea? Yes. Do they care? Absolutely no.

Chapter Text
It’s the next day, and Jack is going to Simon’s shop. If yesterday they felt confident, today… not so much. Jack is a terrible liar, that’s something their brothers always made fun of. And they keep thinking that maybe, this isn’t the best idea. Maybe it would be best for Jack to just ask Simon. Also, Jack shouldn’t feel like this: Simon had made it very clear the first time they met that he wasn’t interested. Still, Jack feels like Simon hasn’t been all honest with them, while they have tried their best to share things with Simon. While still immersed in these thoughts, Jack arrives at Simon’s shop. They walk inside, and wave at Simon.
“Hi Jack! What are you doing here?” Simon asks, smiling.
“I just wanted to say hi.” Jack says, going on the opposite side of the shop’s counter and putting their hands there. “How did the date go?” They ask.
Simon blushes, and places his hands in his pockets. “I’m guessing it was nice, from your reaction.” Jack says, trying to keep smiling. What they haven’t noticed was that by placing their hands on the counter, they were touching hands with Simon.
“Y-yeah…” Simon whispers, looking away.
“That’s amazing!” Jack says. “You know, we should organize a double-date.” They add.
Simon immediately looks back at Jack, eyes wide-open. “Double-date...?” He asks.
“Oh. Did I forget to tell you? I started dating someone!” Jack says, sounding as excited as they could.
“Oh… yeah, you forgot to tell me…” Simon says, looking down on the counter.
“Sorry. It must have slipped my mind.” Jack says. “So, about the double-date, what do you say?”
Simon goes silent for a few seconds. Jack doesn’t understand why. Simon did keep his date from them, didn’t he?
“Alright. I’ll ask.” Simon finally answers, smiling again.
“Awesome. I’m free this Saturday, if that’s fine by you.” Jack proposes.
“I… think yes. I don’t have anything to do…” Simon says.
“Great. Gotta go now, I’ll see you.” Jack says, waving goodbye as they walk out the shop.
“Bye…” Simon says.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On Saturday, Simon is waiting on a bench for his 'date', Agatha Rights. She’s a good friend of Diogenes, and Simon enjoys her company. They’re not the closest, but Simon thinks he can consider her a friend of his. After waiting a little while, he finally sees her, and waves to get her attention.
“Hi Simon!” Agatha says cheerfully, sitting down beside Simon.
“Hi Agatha…” Simon says. “Again, I’m sorry we dragged you into this…” He starts apologizing.
“It’s fine, don’t worry!” Agatha answers, patting Simon on the shoulder. “Instead of apologizing, tell me about this Jack.” Agatha says, putting on lipstick.
“Uhm… well…” Simon begins, blushing.
“If what D told me, they played with your feelings, is that it?” Agatha asks.
“I-I mean, not really… they have all the rights to go out with someone else…” Simon begins.
“But you feel like you should’ve known that they liked someone else.” Agatha finishes for him.
“Yeah… it’s just… a few days prior, I had told them that I liked someone, on accident… and they told me I could tell them… so I thought… that if they liked someone they would have told me.” Simon explains.
“And you really like them?” Agatha asks.
Simon doesn’t answer, and just looks away, blushing again.
“Listen Si. I know D doesn’t like this idea. I don’t think it’s all that bad if you realize what you’re doing, alright?” Agatha asks.
“Yeah… I understand.” Simon replies.
Agatha puts the lipstick in her purse, and draws an eyeliner out. “You want me to put it on you?” She asks.
“Oh. No, it’s fine.” Simon refuses.
“Come one, you wanna make them jealous, right? Then, let’s do it well.” Agatha says, turning to face Simon. “Look at me.” She says.
Simon obeys, and closes his eyes, letting Agatha put makeup on him.
As they’re doing this, from behind them Jack and Alto arrives. Jack immediately sees the pair, and stops in their track.
“This is a bad idea…” They whisper.
Alto looks at them. “It’s a bit too late to think that, isn’t it?” They point out.
“They look happy. This is wrong. We shouldn’t interfere.” Jack continues.
“Just let him realize how it feels when someone who normally tells you everything suddenly doesn’t tell you important information.” Lee says. “Then if you want we can always ‘break up’ in a few days and you tell him it didn’t work out.” Zee continues.
Jack looks at them again. “Okay. We’ll do as you say.”
Then they see Simon turning around to wave at them. Alto suddenly takes Jack’s face into vis hands, and kisses them. Simon stops smiling and waving.
“Alto! The fuck?!” Jack hisses.
“What? We’re supposed to be dating, aren’t we?” Alto says, smirking, and doe walks towards Simon and Agatha.
As soon as Jack and Alto arrive at the bench, Agatha’s eyes widen. “Alto?!” She exclaims, and stands up. “I didn’t know I was going to see you!” She says.
“Agatha! That’s a surprise.” Alto smiles.
“You two know each other?” Simon asks.
“We work together!” Agatha explains. “I thought you were dating someone else, though. Ben, wasn’t it? The tall man with green eyes.” She asks.
Alto seems to stiffen. “Oh… we broke up.” Sin explains. Then, fawn turns towards Simon. “Pleasure to meet you, Simon. I’m Alto.” It says, shacking Simon’s hand.
“Pleasure’s mine.” Simon smiles.
“Agatha? I thought her name was Elisa.” Jack asks Simon.
“Oh! Uhm…” Simon is at loss of words. He doesn’t know how to explain that.
“That’s my middle name. Simon got them mixed up when we first met.” Agatha explains for Simon.
Jack keeps looking at Simon, and Simon looks away, hiding his blush.
“We should go, right? To the café, like you said, Jackie.” Alto suggests.
“Oh… right… let’s go.” Jack says, sounding like they just got out of a trance.
“Lead the way!” Agatha says, taking Simon’s hand.
Jack looks at Agatha and Simon’s hands intertwined, and starts walking.
After a few minutes of walking, where basically the only ones talking were Alto and Agatha, the four of them arrive at a bar, and Simon immediately recognizes it. It’s where him and Jack went for their ‘date’. Simon stops walking, looking at the café’s sign.
“Everything’s alright?” Jack asks.
Simon looks at Jack, smiling. “Yeah. Yup. Everything’s fine.” He says, although he didn’t sound convincing.
Jack looks at him for a little longer, until Alto basically shoves them inside the shop, mumbling a “I’m starving.”
“Alright?” Agatha asks.
“Yeah… Don’t worry.” Simon smiles at her, this time a more genuine smile.
Agatha squeezes his hand, smiling back. Then, they follow Alto and Jack inside the café.
Chapter 10: Misunderstainings
Chapter Text
It’s the lunch break where Alto works, and she is waiting outside the building for Ben to go and eat together. It’s now been a few days since Alto and Jack started fake-dating, and to Alto it looks like neir plan is not going anywhere. Alto had hoped Simon would get jealous and make a move with Jack. But he didn’t say anything. It’s so obvious they both like each other, Alto doesn’t understand how Jack doesn’t see it. Alto tried to tell them, of course, but Jack’s so stubborn they continue to deny it.
Alto looks around, when hu finally sees Ben. “Konny!” Hes basically yells for him.
“Jesus, stop yelling.” Ben says, arriving. “You’re so loud.”
“I was just excited to see you, Konny.” Alto says, picking up buns bag from the ground where sik left it.
“How’s it going?” Ben asks.
“Fine, I guess. I keep trying to get Jack to date Simon, but it’s useless talking with them. You should try, they normally listen to you.” Alto suggests.
“I doubt it. They’re stubborn. And I already told you I wanna stay out of this mess, thank you very much.” Ben says.
“If you say so.” Alto says, sitting down on a bench near-by, where Ben sits as well. “Do you wanna come tomorrow afternoon with me and Jack? I need to buy a few things, and Jack’s coming with me.” Alto asks.
“I can’t. Draven has a match. I lost the last game ‘cause I had work, I don’t wanna miss this one too.” Ben explains.
“Aw, fine.” Alto sighs. “Go be a good dad, Konny.” Alto says, before giving Ben a kiss, and then taking out a sandwich from munt bag.
“Alto?” A voice calls.
Alto turns, and freezes when he sees Agatha. “Agatha! Didn’t see you there!” Alto smiles, trying to put zirself in front of Ben.
“Are you cheating on Jack?” Agatha asks, looking at Alto angrily.
“Oh, no, no!” Alto tries to come up with an excuse. “I… we… it’s not what it looks like!” Alto says, sounding desperate.
“You just kissed that man! On the lips!” Agatha says, pointing at Ben, who just groans.
“Alto and Jack aren’t dating. It’s all fake. I’m dating Alto.” Ben says.
“Ben! You weren’t supposed to say that!” Alto says, smacking Ben’s arm.
“You’re fake-dating Jack?” Agatha asks, taken by surprise.
“Oh! Uhm… maybe?” Alto doesn’t even try to lie anymore. 'Jack is gonna kill me' ne thinks.
“Oh my God!” Agatha exclaims, then she bursts into laughter. Alto raises an eyebrow, and Agatha notices it. “Oh, sorry… It’s just…” She tries to explain, but keeps laughing. “I shouldn’t tell you…” She says.
Then Alto understand. “You’re also fake-dating Simon?” Ze asks, surprised.
Agatha looks at Alto, and they both start laughing, with Ben murmuring an “Idiots”.
“This doesn’t feel real.” Alto says, after jester stopped laughing.
“So… what are we gonna do now?” Agatha asks.
“I say, we try and get these two idiots together. Their pining is hard to watch.” Alto suggests.
“Yeah… But how?” Agatha asks.
“Maybe we could get them in the same place at the same time, maybe with one of us, and… see where we can go from there?” Alto suggests.
“That… sound hardly like a plan.” Agatha says, thinking. “Maybe… let’s get them to meet, and make it so one of them hears the other talk about this fake-date thing… and confess their love?” Agatha suggests.
“You’re a genius!” Alto says, smiling.
“It’s not gonna work.” Ben comments.
“Shut up Konny, it’s gonna go greatly.” Alto says.
“So… any idea on when to do it?” Agatha asks.
“I’m going out with Jack tomorrow afternoon… maybe you could bring Simon to the park, and I’ll make sure we’re there as well.” Alto suggests.
“It could work. I’ll ask another of Simon’s friends though, he’ll go out for sure with them.” Agatha says. “And I’ve got a doctor appointment tomorrow.” She adds.
“Perfect! Write me when you have the time of the meeting.” Alto says. “You do have my number, right?” Pet adds.
“Yup. I’ll see you, then. I’m gonna grab something to eat. Bye bye!” Agatha says as she walks away.
“It’s gonna go horribly wrong, believe me. It’s better if you’re just honest with them.” Ben says.
“Oh, so now you’re interested.” Alto pouts.
“I just don’t want Jack to get hurt.” Ben explains.
“Nothing bad will happen! Trust me!” Alto assures him.
“That’s exactly why I think it’s not going to go well.” Ben says.
“Hey!” Alto almost yells, at which Ben just laughs.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Simon is preparing to go out with Diogenes. Yesterday they asked him to meet them at the park, so that they could go to the city center and, maybe, go to the library. Simon takes the bus, and arrives at the park. He starts walking towards where Diogenes asked to meet him, when suddenly he hears two voices he recognizes immediately. Jack and their partner, Alto. Jack is complaining about something, or so it seems from their tone. Simon goes towards them to say hello, but when he hears Jack say his name, he freezes. Is Jack complaining about him? Simon hides behind a tree to hear Jack’s conversation. He shouldn’t but… he wants to know what Jack thinks of him.
“I still can’t believe he wouldn’t tell me anything!” Jack exclaims.
“Well… maybe he doesn’t actually like her… maybe he’s trying to get you jealous?” Alto says.
“And why would he? He doesn’t like me, remember.?” Jack says, sounding exasperated, almost as if they had this exact same conversation with Alto multiple times.
Alto sighs, and looks where Simon is hiding. Simon tries to hide better, hoping that Alto didn’t see him.
“Maybe you should just be honest and drop this fake-date business.” Alto says.
‘Fake date?’ Simon thinks, furrowing his eye-brows.
“Wasn’t it your idea?” Jack asks.
“Yes, but…” Alto starts, only to be interrupted by Jack.
“Anyways, I don’t care. Simon clearly doesn’t like me, and you know what? It’s better like that. I don’t want someone who keeps secrets from me.”
Simon grips at the trunk of the tree. He’s the one keeping secrets? Even if Jack and Alto were fake-dating, he still saw them kissing before he ever told Jack about his ‘date’. They’re the one who started it.
“You shouldn’t be so hard to judge…” Alto tries to make Jack reason, but without success.
“I don’t care. Asking him out was a mistake. I would’ve spared myself the heartbreak. I don’t want to be friends with him if he’ll keep keeping secrets from me, even if I opened practically every part of me to him.” Jack says.
Simon wants to run away. He wants to forget about Jack, and forget he may ever have been in love. But he won’t run away this time. He’ll confront Jack, he’ll tell them exactly how he feels. They don’t want secrets, do they?
Alto looks at Jack panicked. “Are you sure? Aren’t you being a bit harsh? Shouldn’t you give him a second chance?” Alto suggests.
“I don’t want to.” Jack says, looking away.
“Well, then that’s mutual.” Simon says, arriving from behind Jack.
As they hear his voice, Jack turns around, panic in their face. “Simon?” They whisper.
“I heard you don’t wanna be my friends. Fine. I’ll leave you alone then.” Simon says, trying to keep his voice as firm as possible.
Jack widens their eyes. They open their mouth to speak, only to close it immediately after.
“Simon, I’m sure there has been a misunderstanding. Jack didn’t mean that, right Jack?” Alto tries and explain for Jack.
“No. I meant it.” Jack says, looking Simon straight into his eyes. “I meant every word I said.”
“Maybe I had my reasons to keep secrets, don’t you think?” Simon says, breaking the eye-contact. “And don’t think you have told me everything either. I saw you two kiss at the shop.”
Alto puts his hand in front of thons mouth. “Well, then I guess this was a mistake from the start, wasn’t it?” Jack says, though their voice is starting to quiver.
“I guess so. I guess I should just stop falling in love.” Simon says, holding back his tears. “Goodbye.” He says, turning around to walk away.
As soon as he feels he’s far enough, Simon starts crying. He messed up, he knows it. It’s his fault, again. Why did he think falling in love again was going to go well?
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jack looks as Simon walks away, starting to feel their eyes watering.
“Jack… I’m so sorry…” Alto says, placing zhir hand on their shoulder.
“I hurt him… I… why did I say that?” Jack starts crying, and Alto hugs them. “He loved me… I’m an idiot… it’s my fault... why didn’t I realize it?” Jack mumbles through their tears, hiccupping.
Alto stays silent. Zee feels like it’s her fault… “I’m sorry Jack…” mae says again, continuing to hug Jack.
Chapter 11: A change of heart
Chapter Text
It’s Monday, and Simon just arrived at work. It’s been around a week since he and Jack had the fight, and they haven’t talked since. Anytime they saw each other – which happens a lot when you work in the same street – they would just ignore each other, since neither of them wants to admit their faults. Diogenes, Agatha and even Charles keep trying to convince Simon to try and talk to Jack, but he doesn’t listen. Simon’s convinced that he’ll be better off on his own, without them. But, despite how he may pretend to feel, most of his dreams recently have had Jack as the protagonist. And they’re nice dreams, but when he wakes up and remembers them, he has to fight the tears back. Simon hates feeling like this, he doesn’t want to feel this way for Jack, not anymore.
“Fuck.” Oakley, Simon’s coworker, says, breaking Simon’s thoughts, who was doodling. Was he doodling flowers? Maybe.
“What’s wrong?” Simon asks.
“We basically don’t have coins.” Oakley says, reaching for his wallet.
“Okay?” Simon is confused. “No one pays in cash here.”
“Yeah, but what if someone does, and we need to give them the change?” Oakley retorts, and sighs, closing his wallet. “Do you have some coins? I’ll change them for you.” He asks.
Simon looks in his wallet. “Nope. I only have 20 cents, or 30 dollars.” He says.
“Alright.” Oakley says, then he takes five dollars out of the cash register. “Go to the flower shop here on the right, and ask them if they can change these into coins.” He asks, handing the five dollars to Simon.
Simon stares at him. “Why can’t you go?”
“I’m allergic to flowers.” Oakley says.
“I’m allergic too!” Simon says.
“Do you also get an asthma attacks?” Oakley asks.
Simon looks away. “I don’t.” He answers. “Can’t you go to another shop?” He tries again.
“Most are closed today.” Oakley answers, and it seems like he’s losing his patience. “Come on Simon, it won’t take long.”
Simon looks at the five dollars, then sighs. “Fine. But you’ll need to do me a favor next time.” He says.
“Sure thing, Simon.” Oakley agrees, smiling. “Now go, before we actually need those coins.” Oakley basically pushes Simon out of the door.
Simon is now outside, and he looks at the pink shop near the tattoo parlor. He takes a deep breath. He doesn’t have to talk to Jack, he just has to go inside, ask for the change, and walk back out. Simon takes out a tissue, and puts it on his nose, hoping he won’t start sneezing immediately. And like that, he walks inside the shop, the little ball ringing.
“Good morning!” Jack says, turning around smiling. But their smile drops when they see Simon. “Oh. Hello Simon.” They say, basically no tone in their voice.
Simon feels his eyes water due to the flowers, so he tries to be fast. “We need some change. Do you have any coins- achoo!” Simon sneezes, fortunately in the tissue.
“Oh, yes, I think I do.” Jack says, going to search in the cash register.
Simon walks towards the counter, and he places the five dollars on top of it.
While Jack is counting the coins, the shop bell rings again. Simon turns and freezes when he recognizes the person that walked in. Simon turns around, hoping he won’t be recognized. Out of all the people that could’ve walked in, it had to be his ex-boyfriend?
“Good morning!” Jack says, smiling at Liam.
“Morning.” Liam answers. “I needed a bouquet for a recital–“ Liam stops talking, and looks at Simon as he collects the coins. “Simon?!” He exclaims.
Simon stops moving. He was hoping he wouldn’t be recognized.
“It’s been so long!” Liam says again, basically turning Simon around to face him. “Gosh, you haven’t changed!” He says.
Simon opens his mouth to say something, but he only manages to sneeze.
“You’re allergic to flowers, right?” Liam asks. “Then what are you doing here?” He laughs.
Simon stays silent. He didn’t want to see Liam, but now what can he do? He’s blocking the only way to get out of the shop.
Liam stops laughing, and looks at Simon, who looks away. “Listen Si, I’m sorry.” He says, grabbing Simon’s arm. “Can’t we try again?” He asks, squeezing his arm.
“Liam–“ Simon begins talking, trying to get out of grip. He sneezes another three times, and his tissue falls.
“I know, you’re probably mad. But it was an accident!” Liam continues, grabbing Simon’s other arm as well.
“Let me go…” Simon whispers, sounding scared.
“Here’s your bouquet.” Jack says, grabbing Liam by his right arm and forcing him to let Simon go. “Now please go.” They say, sounding angry.
Liam looks at them, then at Simon, and then again at Jack. He takes out some money, pays, and goes out of the shop. “Think about it, Simon.” He says, before closing the shop doors.
Simon tries to take a deep breath, only to start coughing.
“Simon, it’s best if you leave. I don’t want you to die here.” Jack says, giving Simon the coins he had left on the counter.
“Sorry.” Simon says, taking the coins, and picking up the tissue off the ground.
“It’s not your fault. They were being a creep.” Jack says.
Simon feels like he’s about to cry. “Thank you.” He whispers, walking towards the door. “I’ll see you.” He says, looking at Jack with a sad smile.
Jack’s eyes widen. “You wanna meet again?” They ask.
“If you don’t mind…” Simon says, smiling again, and then leaves the shop. He wants to thank Jack properly, without rushing away due to the allergies. They really helped him. Then he’ll think if they can try again.
Simon goes back in the shop, and only then realizes he must look really bad, since Oakley looks at them panicked. “Simon, you look awful. What took you so long?” Oakley asks.
Simon takes another tissue, and starts blowing his nose. “I met my ex.” He explains.
“Oh. Bad stuff.” Oakley says, giving Simon a little phial. “Here, it helps with my allergy.”
“Thanks.” Simon says, taking the phial and giving Oakley the coins.
“Sorry I got you into that situation.” He says, taking the coins and putting them into the cash register.
“It’s fine, you didn’t know.” Simon says, smiling sadly.
Then, the shop’s door opens, and a client walks in. Oakley greets them, and goes to the back with them.
Simon remains alone, and sighs, letting his tears come out. But even though he’s crying, he still smiles thinking about Jack. Maybe they really just need to talk things out. While he doesn’t know about anything romantic, he definitely would be happy to be friends with Jack again.
Chapter 12: When father and son meet again
Chapter Text
“Hey Mike.” Jack says, sitting down in front of their brother. “How do you convince someone that you still like them and that, even if you’ve messed things up, you still care?”
Mikell looks at them, raising an eyebrow. “What did you do?” He asks.
“Nothing. It’s… a hypothetical question.” Jack says, laughing nervously.
Mike still looks at them, but then just drinks his coffee.
“Come on, Mike, you really have no ideas?” Jack insists.
“How bad did you mess up?” Mike asks.
Jack looks away. “I… it’s bad.” They simply say.
“I don’t know. You could… do something for him. Something Simon will appreciate.” Mike suggests.
“Thank y-” Jack stops. “Hey! I never mentioned Simon!” They exclaim.
“Wasn’t hard to guess.” Mike says, finishing his coffee.
“Hello, boys.” Evelyne says, coming inside the room.
Jack stiffens, and Mike stands up, glaring at his sibling. “Tell them.” He whispers, and he goes out of the room.
Evelyne sighs, but smiles at Jack. “I… heard your conversation with Mike.” She says, sitting down on the chair Mike left empty. “Are you alright?” She asks.
Jack looks down, and doesn’t answer.
“Honey… I know you’re mad… but please… we wanna try again…” She says, placing her hand on Jack’s.
Jack looks up, and sighs. “It’s just… I’ve messed up with… the person I like… and… I don’t know how to make it better.” They say. Jack doesn’t know if they want to tell their mother that the person they like is a man. They don’t know how she’d react.
“Mike’s advice seems good.” She says. “Did this Simon ever mentione something he might need that you could give him?” Evelyne asks.
Jack freezes, looking at Eve. Alright, she knows Jack likes a man, and she doesn’t seem to mind. “You... you’re okay with… you don’t mind I like a man?” Jack whispers.
Eve’s expression softens. “Of course not, dear. I’d love you no matter what.” She says, smiling and squeezing Jack’s hand, and Jack returns the smile.
Jack looks down. "What would you say if I old you I was genderfluid and that I used they/them pronouns?" They ask.
Eve smiles. "I'd say itìs alright, and that I'd love my child no matter what.
Jack looks at their mother, smiling. "Really?"
"Really." Eve answers.
Jack just looks at her, smiling. Then they remembers something. “We do have a book called ‘The Willows’, right?” They ask.
“The one by Algernon Blackwood? Yes, we should.” Eve says.
Jack stands up, and goes to the door of the room.
“Jack!” Eve calls them, and they turn around. “Good luck.” She says smiling.
Jack smiles back, and practically runs in their room, looking through the books, until they find the book they were searching. Jack remembered that Simon had told them he was looking for ‘The Willows’ by Algernon Blackwood, but the book shop didn’t have it at the moment. He said he would wait for the book to arrive, but he would be happy to receive it as a gift, right? Jack checks the clock on the wall. Simon should still be at work. They run downstairs, going for the car.
“Jack! Don’t drive too fast!” Mike calls after them.
“Don’t worry!” They say, already in the car, starting it. Jack knows it’s not much, but they hope it will at least give them another chance.
Jack arrives at the shop, and stops before entering. They hope Simon will appreciate the gesture. They take a deep breath, and go inside the shop. “Hi Simon!” They say, smiling.
Simon turns around, looking surprised. “Jack? What are you doing here?” He asks.
“Well… do you remember when you told me you were looking for a book but the book shop didn't have it?” Jack asks.
Simon looks at Jack with a confused look. “I did?” He asks.
Jack’s smile almost drops. Did they imagine it? “I… yes! Yes, you did.” Jack tries again, pulling the book out.
Simon’s eyes light up. “Oh, right!” Simon says, now smiling as well. “Jack… thank you. You didn’t have to buy it, though. I was going back at the book shop, anyways.” He says.
“I didn’t buy it. I had it at home.” Jack says, giving the book to Simon. “You can keep it. I don’t really read much.” They say.
Simon hesitates. “Are you sure?” He asks.
“Of course! It’s a gift.” Jack says, placing the book on the counter.
Simon stops smiling. “Jack… I… why?” He asks.
“What?” Jack asks confused.
“Why are you doing this?” Simon asks again.
Jack goes to speak, but doesn’t find the words. What, a person can’t just do a nice gesture now? “I found it and I thought…” Jack begins, but stops. “I’m sorry, Simon. For what I said at the park… and, well, for everything before.” Jack says.
Simon looks down at the book, sighing. “Jack… I know what I said yesterday… but right now… romance is still out of the question.” Simon says, looking briefly at Jack.
Jack looks at him. “What are your feelings for me?” They ask.
Simon looks up at Jack, and back down again. “Please Jack… I… It’s not that…” Simon whispers.
Jack looks at him. “I’ll make you fall in love with me. I swear.” Jack says, trying a smile.
Simon shakes his head, but he smiles. “We’ll see.” Simon says.
“Are we friends at least?” Jack asks.
Simon’s smile grows. “Of course. I missed you.” He says.
Jack smiles as well. “I wanna kiss him…” Jack thinks. Then they shake their head. No, they’re just friends now. Maybe one day…
“I’ll leave you to work then.” Jack says, still smiling. “I’ll see you.”
Simon says goodbye, and Jack walks out of the shop.
“Mike! Mike!” Jack says, running inside.
“Will you stop that?” Mike asks laughing.
Jack is so excited to tell Mike the news that they barely see their father, who was talking with him. “I’m friends with Simon again!” Jack says, smiling. He’s been smiling so much that their cheeks started to hurt.
Mike smiles as well. “I’m happy for you, Jack.” He says, hugging Jack.
“Now I just need to make him fall in love with me. Again.” Jack says.
Mike rolls his eyes. “Sure, Jack, sure.” He says.
“I’m happy you have someone in your life, Jack.” Adam says.
Jack turns around. “Oh, dad… I didn’t see you.” Jack says, his smile dropping a bit.
Adam smiles. “It’s fine.” He says. “You said his name was… Simon, right?” He asks.
“Yes…” Jack says.
“Is he the man that was here on Halloween, curly blond hair?” Adam asks again. “Do you know his surname?”
“Yeah… Glass, I think.” Jack says, confused.
Adam smiles again. “I actually know his father!” Adam says, laughing. “He’s here as well. He’s the one who stayed here for a night.”
When Jack understands who Adam is talking about, they start laughing as well. “Really? I did think they looked similar.”
“I know they haven’t seen each other in a while… I don’t know if Ogden knows his son lives in this city.” Adam says.
Jack looks at Adam, an idea taking form in their head. “Amazing, dad! I can make them meet again! I mean, wouldn’t it be nice for them to meet?” Jack suggests.
“Amazing idea, Jack! Father and son reunited, amazing.” Adam says, smiling.
“Awful idea.” Mike says. “There’s probably a reason if they don’t haven’t seen each other in a long time.”
“Aww, Mike, don’t be like that.” Jack says. “It’ll be great!”
Mike looks at them, then walks out of the room.
Jack sighs. “I’m choosing to ignore him when he does that.” Jack says. “So. Tomorrow I can go to Simon’s house, and you can bring his father there.” Jack suggests. “I’ll give you the address.”
“Great. But…” Adam sighs. “Ogden may not agree to come with me. I’ll tell you if he refuses.”
“Yeah… let’s hope he doesn’t.” Jack says, laughing nervously.
“Everything will be alright, Jack.” Adam says, putting a hand on Jack’s shoulder.
“Coming!” Simon says, going towards the door. He opens it, and lets out a small surprised gasp. “Jack? What are you doing here?” He asks, letting them in.
“I have a surprise for you.” Jack says, smiling.
“Really? And what is it?” Simon asks.
“It’s not a surprise if I tell you.” Jack says, laughing. “I can just say that it’s someone you haven’t seen in a long time.” Jack says.
Simon furrows his brows, trying to understand who Jack is talking about. Could it be his half-sister? Improbable. Simon looks at Jack confused.
Jack just smiles, and looks around the living room. “I kinda forgot your living room was this white.” They say.
Simon laughs. “My brother’s a minimalist.” He says, and Jack suffocates a laugh. “Okay, what’s up with you?” Simon asks.
“It’s a surprise, I can’t tell you.” Jack says again.
“Jack, were you ever told you’re shit at doing surprises?” Simon asks, laughing.
“Hey! It’s not like I actually told you your father’s coming…” Jack says, but stops and covers their mouth with their hand.
Simon freezes. “My… father?” He asks, whispering. He looks at Jack desperately. “You told my father to come here?” He asks again, this time the whisper was louder.
Jack looks confused. “Yes… I mean, kinda… I didn’t tell him he was going to see you…” Jack says. “Are you alright?” They ask, starting to worry.
Simon is feeling like he’s about to suffocate. “My father is coming here?” He asks again, his voice cracking. Simon feels like he could have a panic attack any moment now.
“I… is it not good?” Jack asks, not understanding.
Simon opens his mouth to speak, but there’s a knock on the door. “No, no, no…” Simon says, head in his hands.
“Simon!” Jack says, running to him, but Simon pushes them away, fear in his eyes.
“Heyy, is everything alright? The door was open…” A man with red hair comes inside the house. Simon recognizes him as Jack’s father.
Right behind him, Simon sees his father. “Really Adam, what’s so important that I had to see it?” Ogden says, annoyed. Then, he sees Simon.
Simon starts crying. He hadn’t seen his father since he finished high school, and wasn’t planning in seeing him any time soon.
Ogden makes a disgusted face. “Adam. You brought me all the way here. To see him?” He says, locking eyes with Simon, who immediately breaks the eye contact.
Adam looks confused. “I thought you’d like to see your son again…” He says.
Ogden laughs. “He’s not my son. How could I have a disgrace like him as a son?” He says. “He’s an excuse of a son, that’s what he is.”
Simon just looks down, crying.
“Take it back.” Jack says, angry. “He’s not a disgrace.”
Ogden looks at Jack, and then goes away. “I’m going home.”
Adam stays on the door, looking at Ogden, and then at Jack and Simon.
Jack turns towards Simon, trying to hug him. “Simon, I’m so sorry, I didn’t know…”
Simon dodges the hug. “Get out.” He says, finally looking up.
Jack stays there, silent.
“I said. Get out!” Simon says, almost screaming, crying even more.
“Jack… let’s go…” Adam says.
Jack looks at Simon again. “Please let me explain. I don’t wanna leave you alone.” Jack tries.
“I wanna stay alone!” Simon says, his voice breaking again. “And I especially don’t wanna be with you right now.”
Jack looks like they want to say something again, but they just walk away.
Once Jack and Adam are outside, Simon sits down on the floor, crying. Simon was hoping he would reconciliate with Jack but… everything keeps going wrong. He doesn’t even know how they found his father, but he can’t believe they really did it. They really brought him here.
Simon stays there, on the floor, crying, until Charles comes home.

Chapter Text
The next day, Simon goes to do the first shift at work. He still hadn’t recovered from what had happened yesterday, and he didn’t really want to go to work. But Charles had insisted he went, since he also had work and he didn’t want to leave Simon home alone. So, he agreed to not call for sick, and asked Diogenes if they could meet him at work before their classes at uni started.
When he arrives in front of the shop, he goes in to unlock the door. But he notices a note attached to the door. Simon picks it up, and reads it. It’s from Jack.
“I’m truly sorry for what happened yesterday, and you have all the rights to be mad at me. I won’t bother you again, I swear. I’ll stop coming by, and I’ll leave you be. Bye.” Simon looks at the note awhile longer, then crumbles it and throws it in the bin. He really doesn’t want to think about it right now.
He goes in the shop and starts preparing to open up, when Diogenes comes in.
“Hey Simon…” They say, sounding sad and worried.
“Hey D… thank you for coming.” Simon answers, smiling at them.
They look at each other for a moment, and then Simon hugs Diogenes, who hugs him back. He sniffles in their shoulder, and D caresses his back.
“I’m so sorry Simon…” D say. “Charles told me what happened.” They add.
Simon doesn’t answer, tightening the hug.
“Simon, listen.” D says, breaking the hug and holding Simon’s head up to look him in the eyes. “I can’t understand how you’re feeling, but I can imagine it. And I know that it’s mostly Jack’s fault… well, basically it’s all their fault.” D continues, but they get interrupted by Simon.
“I don’t wanna forgive them.” He says, looking down.
“I’m not saying that. I just wanted to say that it’s true they fucked up, but they had no idea. I imagine you never told them about your father.”
“I normally don’t bring him up in conversations unless it’s absolutely necessary.” Simon says, coldly.
“Jack just wanted to do a nice gesture. Don’t destroy the relationship you built for these misunderstandings.” D says, drying a tear off his face.
Simon sighs. “It seems like every time we have something going on, something happens hat just destroys it. Maybe we should just stop…”
“Simon, I know you care for them! You looked so happy when you two were going along. Hell, I haven’t seen you so happy in a long time! It doesn’t have to end like this.”
Simon looks down again, and starts crying, hugging D. “I’m scared…” He whispers.
“I’ll be here for you. You don’t have to do anything if it makes you uncomfortable. Just… don’t forget what I said, okay?” They ask, kissing Simon’s head.
Simon nods. “Thank you, D… I… couldn’t ask for a better friend…”
D smiles. “I can say the same.”
Jack is going at the book shop with their brother Mike. He said it would be a good distraction for them. These past few days Jack has been down, which to anyone who knows them means something bad happened. Jack is someone who, even if they are feeling sad, they will still try and smile. If they just stop, then it’s bad. Really bad.
“Do… do you think… I’ll ever have a second chance with Simon?” Jack asks.
Mike sighs. “Jack. That was your second chance.”
“Right…” They say, letting out an unsteady breath.
Mike puts a hand on Jack’s shoulder. “You fucked up. Bad. Really bad.”
“Oh wow, thank you Mike. I didn’t realize.” Jack says, scoffing.
“Let the waters cool down, and see if he reaches out. Don’t do anything until he decides to talk to you again. It’s his decision.” Mike says, and he ruffles Jack’s hair. “But… it’s best if you move on.”
“But… I love him…” Jack says, voice breaking. “How would you feel if…” Jack starts, but stops when they notice how Mike’s looking at them. “Right… you’re aroace… I forgot…” Jack stays silent for a moment. “But still. If you had an argument with Chris… wouldn’t you want to… try and make things right again?”
Mike looks away, then he sighs. “You’re right… but… wait for him… you’d just make things worse.”
Jack nods, and they continue to walk towards the book shop. When they go in, they part from Mike to go and look at they fantasy section. When they arrive, they freeze. Simon’s there as well. Simon turns, and he and Jack lock eyes. Jack tries to hide behind a bookshelf, but in vain, since Simon follows them.
“Jack. Hi.” Simon says.
“Simon… hi… how’re you doing?” Jack asks, leaning against the bookshelf.
“I wouldn’t do that. You could make the bookshelf fall.” Simon says, and Jack immediately stops leaning against it.
They stand there in silence for just a few seconds, but for the both of them they feel like hours. Then finally Simon breaks the silence. “Jack… I…” But he stops.
“Simon… I’m so sorry… I… didn’t know you had a bad relationship with your father… I know I shouldn’t have done it… but…” Jack says.
“I know you didn’t mean it, Jack…” Simon says, smiling for a brief moment. “But… right now, I can’t forgive you… maybe someday… but not now.” Simon looks down, and takes a deep breath. “But I don’t wanna lose you. I… care for you… I care about you… I…” Simon stops again. “Do… do you wanna go out? Like… I don’t know… a restaurant or something?” Simon asks, blushing.
Jack looks at Simon in disbelief. They didn’t think Simon would ever wanna see them again. “You sure?” They ask, and Simon nods.
“I’m sorry too… I guess we’ve both done things that hurt the other.” Simon says.
Jack starts smiling. “I’d love going out to eat with you” They say, red tinting their face as well.
“Great. I’ll… call and I’ll write you where we’re going.” Simon says.
“A surprise?” Jack asks.
“Yeah…” Simon says, smiling, this time a genuine and big smile.
Jack smiles as well. “I love your smile…” They whisper.
“You… you do?” Simon asks, turning even redder.
Jack now basically matches their hair color. They said that out loud, didn’t they? “Yes… yes I do.”
Simon smile grows. “Well… I’ll see you.” Simon says, and hugs Jack. “Bye!”
“Good… bye…” Jack says back, taken aback by the hug. Once they got over the shock, Jack starts smiling again, feeling as happy as they could be.
Notes:
I'm so sorry this chapter came out so late, but I had a lot to study.
Next chapter is the last, and I really can't believe this will be 14 chapters long. I really didn't realize I was going to write so much. But I've had fun nonetheless. I don't know if I'll write another fic and if I do, when. I had an idea for a Harry Potter fanfic, but we'll have to see.
Also, I just wanted to say that Chris is an OC of mine, and he's Mikell's best friend, just to clarify that passage.
Chapter 14: First Date
Notes:
(See the end of the chapter for notes.)
Chapter Text
Simon reads the message for the fifth time, and then, finally, hits send. Simon had spent the entire day looking for a place where he and Jack could go to eat: it took him an embarrassingly long time, but he really wants everything to be perfect. This meeting (or, more so, date, but Simon doesn’t know if he could call it that) could very well determine if he and Jack could continue to hang out, or if the damage is irreparable and their relationship, both platonic and romantic, is destined to be a scrapped chapter of their lives.
Now, Simon wasn’t expecting to meet Jack at the bookshop. He had spent the last few days really down, like he hadn’t felt in years. At first, he thought it was due to seeing his father again. And, while it wasn’t a pleasant experience, what hurt him most, he realized one evening while he was trying to fall asleep, was the feeling that Jack had broken his trust. But, soon after, he realized that what Jack did that ended up hurting him – except for the whole fake-dating situation, but they were both at fault there – came from good intentions. Jack isn’t mean, they’re just naïve: from what Simon understood in the past months, Jack will always try and see the good side of a person. It’s not their fault Simon’s father wasn’t like what they imagined.
So, when Simon saw Jack, he felt like he had to listen to their reason for everything that had happened, as well as explain some things to them. What he wasn’t anticipating was for the leap his heart had when he saw them. D was right at the end: he hadn’t felt this way about someone in a long time, not since Liam at least. And he doesn’t want to let go of that feeling, not now, and maybe not ever.
Simon’s phone beeps, bringing him out of his thoughts. It’s Jack. Simon can’t help but smile.
“Ooh, I love that restaurant!” the message reads. “Can’t wait to see you again <3”
Simon feels his face heat up a little as he’s answering: “See you tomorrow at dinner then!”. Before he sends the message, he considers adding a heart emoji, but then, as he starts to feel a bit panicked, decides on leaving the message as it is.
Now he just has to wait until tomorrow evening, knowing full well he’ll spend the next day worrying and feeling anxious and making up imaginary scenarios where everything goes to shit.

“One day you have to tell us your secret for being so lucky” Ben says looking at Jack.
Jack grins and makes a high-pitched squeal.
“You might wanna save your energy, you never know what the night might bring…” Alto says, giving Jack a mischievous grin, making them turn red.
“I feel like I could conquer the world with the amount of energy I have right now.” Jack says, standing up once more from Alto’s chair.
The three of them are at Alto’s, helping Jack to get ready for their date. Or, they’re making sure Jack doesn’t do something absolutely idiotic.
Jack has been feeling amazing ever since they met Simon at the bookshop. They had a sudden surge of energy, and hadn’t been able to properly sleep. But their adrenaline is so high they don’t really mind.
“Okay Jack, you gotta start getting dressed, otherwise you’ll be late.” Ben says, standing up and throwing Jack’s clothes at them. Jack grabs the clothes and basically runs in the bathroom to get change.
Alto lets out a small laugh. “They look absolutely thrilled about tonight.” It says, looking at Ben.
“I’m happy for them.” He says, squeezing Alto arm, earning a small kiss on his knuckles.
Jack comes back from the bathroom, changed, and almost ready to go.
“Let me take a look at your hair.” Ben says, standing up. “Your hair’s a mess, Jack” He continues, trying to comb their hair with his finger.
“My hair’s fine, Ben- ouch!” Jack yelps when Ben pulls their hair a bit too hard. “Okay, okay, let me go now!” They laugh, hitting Ben on the arm.
“Come on Ben, let them be. The messy hair is part of their charm anyways.” Alto gives Jack a pat on their back, making them jump a little.
“Stop hurting me!” Jack almost yells, massaging their back. “I’m going now, anyways.” Jack huffs, but then smiles once more. “Alright. Wish me luck!” Without giving the pair a chance to answer, Jack sprints out of the room.
“I really don’t know how they keep having that much energy.” Ben comments.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Simon!” Jack says, running towards Simon, wearing a big bright smile, as well as holding a small bouquet in their hands.
Simon turns around, returning the smile, his heart fluttering a bit. He could stare at that smile for hours without ever needing to look away.
“I hope I’m not allergic to those flowers.” Simon says, eyeing the bouquet suspiciously.
“You told me which ones you’re allergic to, and I’m pretty sure carnations were not one of those.” Jack says, giving the pink bouquet to Simon.
“Well then, thank you.” Simon takes the bouquet, smiling and sniffing it. It’s a peculiar scent – almost spicy – but Simon doesn’t mind it. “Let’s go inside, shall we?” Simon asks, going to the door.
When they sit down, Simon starts to fidget a bit with his rings. “I think I owe you an apology.” He starts, but Jack almost immediately stops him, looking… surprised?
“No, listen Simon, I’m the one who needs to apologize.” They say, looking down. “I didn’t want to hurt you, bringing your father to your house was a stupid idea.”
“You didn’t know that I don’t go along with him, Jack, I should have told you.” Simon grabs Jack’s hand.
“I should have asked you. I should have told you.” Jack looks back up. “And you were so hurt because of me and I… don’t want you to be hurt. I’m so sorry.” Jack squeezes Simon’s hand.
“I got scared, Jack, that’s why I reacted like that.” Simon confesses. He takes a deep breath. “Do you remember the guy I met at your shop? The one who was bothering me?”
“Yeah…”
“Well… that’s Liam, my ex. He…” Simon looks away for a moment, furrowing his eyebrows, looking upset. “He was always set on making me do things I didn’t want to do and that made me upset. He said it was to help me, but it always ended up hurting me.” Simon closes his eyes for a moment.
“And one of those was you meeting your father?” Jack asks, feeling their heart clench when Simon nods. “Fuck… I’m sorry Simon. I’d never wanna force you to do something you don’t want to do.”
“I know.” Simon says, looking at Jack again and smiling. “I just got scared that day. But knowing that you were just trying to go a nice gesture means a lot. And… well, I’m glad you let me have my space. It sounds obvious, but I’ve had some people not respecting my boundaries. I’m happy to know that you do.”
Jack smiles again, laughing. “Those people were assholes.”
Simon laughs as well. “Well, yeah.” When he stops laughing, he looks away, frowning. “I’m sorry for hurting you as well.”
Jack frowns, but when realization hits them, they soften their expression. “I’m not mad at you. I’ve had time to think about what happened, and I just can’t blame you. We both ended up hurt, so I think we both got what we deserved out of that.”
“I panicked.” Simon continues, almost as if he hadn’t heard anything that Jack said. “I… was planning on confessing to you… but I saw Alto going in for a kiss, and… I said the first thing that came to mind.
And then I was afraid to tell you the truth and…” Simon releases a shaky breath, blinking to fight away the tears that threaten to come out.
“I should have had you meet Alto before. Hell, you’ve never met any of my friends.” Jack says, looking down as well. “Alto knows I don’t mind physical affection, and they sometimes try to kiss me to tease me. But it’s never been romantic.” Jack sighs.
“I would love to meet your friends, Jack. Why haven’t you never introduced us?” Simon asks, searching for Jack’s eyes.
“I was scared. Ben and Alto… we met in high school, and… high school was bad. Like really bad. I guess I wasn’t ready to let that part of myself out.” Jack explains, looking back up. “I was also a bit afraid they’d scare you off. They’re… peculiar, to say the least.”
Simon smiles. “Well, I’d love to meet them, when you’re ready. Well, I’ve already met Alto, so I’m just missing Ben now.”
Jack smiles once more. “So… does that mean you want to meet again?” They ask, hope raising in their voice.
Simon smiles, but before he can answer, the waiter arrives to take the orders. The pair orders, then sit in silence for a while.
Jack coughs. “Well, that was awkward.”
Simon laughs, covering his mouth to avoid bothering the other customers. “Of course we can meet again” Simon says.
Jack’s face lights up. “Does that mean we’re friends again?”
Simon looks away for a moment, blush coloring his cheeks. “Well… I wouldn’t mind trying to be more than friends this time.”
Jack turns red, letting out a nervous laugh. “You’re being serious?” They ask, smiling even more.
Simon looks at them, laughing as well, and nods.
“Oh, that’s brilliant!” Jack says, beaming at him. They look around a bit, then ask: “I really want to kiss you right now. Can I?”
Simon doesn’t answer, instead, he stands up a bit from his chair, kissing Jack. It’s a small peck, more than anything, but there’s such sweetness in it that it seems to last longer.
“You don’t know for how long I’ve wanted to do this.” Simon whispers.
“Trust me, I know.” Jack responds, kissing Simon’s nose.
Simon sits back down, just in time for the waiter to arrive with their food. The couple spends the rest of the night chatting away, talking about anything that crosses their minds. At the end of the night, they kiss goodbye, promising to see each other the following morning.
Notes:
Guess who's back. I've finally had time and ideas to finish this fic. I'm actually really sorry that it took so long, but between an awful writer's block and the last year of high school (I'm literally starting uni tomorrow lol) I've just haven't been able to write. But the fic is done now, yey! What motivated me most to finish this was an idea for another fic, so I wanted to finish this one to start the other. Though I don't know when I'll publish it really. It basically will be my main SCP AU, which is long and complicated and not really canon compliant (I mean, what really is canon at the end of the day), but I'll see what I can do. Maybe (emphasis on maybe) I'll publish some infos about the characters on my tumblr or tiktok, I'll have to see. Anyways, I hope you enoyed the fic! I'm kinda proud I managed to finish it lol, I always have a hard time finishing the things I start. Hopefully I'll be able to write more!
