"Despite purposefully cultivating this image, this mask of a perfect Shadowhunter, perfect son, it didn't stop him from being irrationally disappointed, upset even, when his siblings couldn't see underneath the facade. He wanted them to look at him, see the way his smiles never reached his eyes, how his shoulders hiked up to his ears when he had to speak in front of people, how his hands clenched into fists when his parents started making disparaging comments about Downworlders even as he nodded stiffly along.
He wanted them to see all the tells he hadn't quite managed to train himself out of yet, see all the jagged edges where his mask didn't quite seamlessly blend into skin.
