Work Text:
Humming to a song as it blares loudly in your kitchen, you were busy mixing a bowl full of devil's food cake batter.
You wanted to make something nice and sweet for Bob after he comes home from work. He did like his sweet treats after all.
After you finished mixing all the ingredients around, you tapped the spoon at the edge of the bowl, getting the excess batter off, then placed it in the sink beside you.
Staring down in the bowl, you felt like you were missing something.
'Oh! Chocolate chips!'
Grabbing the bowl, you spun around and were going to walk over to the oven area where there was more counter space, but you bumped into something squishy and firm. You sounded a gasp, and a wet plop followed it.
Looking down, you were holding the opening of the bowl up against your chest, and the batter has fallen mostly onto the floor. It has slipped passed between the edge of the bowl and your body.
Lifting your head up, Bob had his arms out and looked startled by what just happened. It seemed like he was going to give you a hug from behind.
"Are you serious?" You quickly turned off the music in your kitchen.
It was now just silence between you and Bob for a moment.
"Ooh, sweetheart, I'm so sorry… " As his eyes met yours, he lowered his arms. "I— uh…"
You were a tad bit mad and annoyed, but you just sighed, pushing the feelings to the side. There was no point in getting mad. It wasn’t going to undo what happened.
“It’s okay, Bob,” you muttered dejectedly, you were looking forward to making something nice and now you couldn’t. You then realized, Bob was home earlier than expected. "You're back early."
Bob shrugged. “Yeah, had a lot more help today." He glanced down at the mess on the floor and spoke, "So, uh, what were ya makin’?” Bob asked slowly, as if he was trying not to say something wrong.
“I was going to make a devil's food cake with chocolate chips, but now…”
Bob seemed to take notice how upset you were. He took a finger and swiped it against your chocolate covered face and licked it off. “Hmm! Taste good. Maybe it tastes better ‘cause it was on you.”
You laughed a bit, you knew he was just trying to make you feel better. "Thanks."
"I'll help you clean up," Bob stated, already grabbing the paper towel roll. "You should… probably go take a shower."
"You're probably right." After placing the bowl to the side, you left the kitchen and went to get cleaned up. Throwing some clean clothes, you felt refreshed and not so sticky anymore.
As you made your way to the kitchen, you smelled something sweet and warm and chocolaty.
'What?'
You saw Bob standing in the kitchen, watching the oven.
"What're you baking?" you asked him.
Bob glanced up at you and grins. "There was still cake batter left in the bowl. It woulda been a shame to let it go ta waste, so we gonna have some muffins instead, sorta, not quite but, y'know."
Muffins, that was something you didn't even think about. Walking over to Bob, you hugged him. He smelled a bit of sweat and grilled meat, but you couldn't care any less.
"Thank you," you muttered, feeling grateful that he was able to make a messy situation into something good.
"Oh, uhm, yer welcome," Bob replied, hugging you back and patting you. He probably had no idea what you were exactly thanking him for, but he hasn't questioned you further.
Pulling back from the embrace, you smiled up at him. "Alrighty, big man, go take a shower. I'll watch the muffins."
Bob gave you a nod as he left the kitchen. "Okay, honey."
It didn't take long for the cupcakes to finish baking at all. It seemed like Bob had a timer running, and it went off, letting you know they were done.
Grabbing an oven mitt, you opened the oven door and carefully pulled out the cupcake pan. You got a full whiff of sweet chocolaty goodness, making your mouth water.
You placed them off to the side to let them cool off.
Bob appeared back into the kitchen, hair still wet from getting out of the shower. He walked over to you and was eyeing the cupcakes. Reaching a hand out to grab one, you smacked him.
"Whaaaat?" Bob whined, snapping his hand back towards himself.
"They're too hot right now. You're going to burn yourself."
He snorted, "I'll be perfectly fine, darlin'. Don'cha worry 'bout a thang."
Bob used his fingers and pulled the muffin out and took a quick chomp. He hissed and huffed as he tried to eat it as quickly as possible. "Oooh! Hot! Hot!"
"I told you!" you exclaimed, shaking your head in amusement. "What am I going to do with you?"
Bob blew against his half-eaten treat and then shoved the rest in his mouth. He licked his lips and hummed. "That was very yummy. Thank you, for the delicious treat, pumpkin."
"Of course, Bob! I just wanted to give you a nice sweet treat."
Bob smiled softly at you and leaned down to your height, giving you a nice chocolate flavored kiss. Pulling back a bit, he held onto the side of your face, staring lovingly into your eyes.
"Oh, darlin', yer the sweetest treat that any man could ever ask for~."
