It was in the way the leaves changed color every autumn, and the ponds froze over every winter. It was in the way the grass crunched under your boots those first winter mornings and the flowers bloomed every spring. It was everywhere if only you took the time to see it.

He had tried and failed, just as he was destined to. It was part of his blood, a curse. His father has tried, and his father before him, and they had both failed. It was the cruel fate his bloodline was tied to, and oh how cold it was.

Walking down any road in Raleigh alone was never a good idea, everyone knew that — everyone except Olivia Thompson, the little girl who lived next to me. Of course, she was only four, and her parents should’ve been watching her, but they had never cared about her. I’m only surprised The Council hadn’t taken her away yet.

It was beautiful and horrifying at the same time. It was the autumn leaves falling, the first snow of the year, and the stench of death all in one. It was a unicorn, but it wasn’t. It was rotting. It was still alive, or was it? It was standing, looking at me, its white horn gleaming in the moonlight.

It was then that I realized. I had been so caught up in the thrill of finally having someone that I was blinded to who he indeed was, a monster. He had never loved me, and he never would.
