Chapter Text

Rose woke up before the sun rose with an uneasiness that was common for her. As she looked around the campsite it was clear that no one was around. Her dad had left her with only her sleeping bag and her old backpack. There was no one else around either so after quickly getting up and stuffing her backpack Rose started running with no destination in particular hoping to find someone, anyone who might help a scared kid. It was far too early though and even if there was it was far too dark for anyone to see with how quick she was moving in her panic.

As Rose stopped by an old cedar she soon realized that she was no longer on the trail; in fact she couldn’t even see Baker Lake through the trees anymore as the light started to filter through the trees. She was completely lost but as her panic continued to grow she noticed a small patch of strawberries that were thankfully ripe. Suddenly realizing how hungry she was Rose quickly ate them while wondering how she was ever going to get out of the woods. Though living the rest of her days in the woods almost seemed preferable to getting back home.

Looking around, Rose shivered slightly as she suddenly realized cold it actually was getting her rain jacket out of her bag and finally decided to just keep walking in hopes of finding some sign of civilization. The walk was slow going though and she was getting more tired the farther she wandered into the words though the bird songs made her feel at least all a little safe as she came across a small clearing. She didn’t know how long she'd been traveling when she got hungry again so she sat and ate a few of the cliff bars she had tucked away in her bag and, completely exhausted, decided to stay in the little clearing for the rest of the day.

After a little nap Rose woke up to a light rain and quickly realized how quickly the clouds were moving in. Rose quickly grabbed her backpack and ran out of the clearing and back into the woods. The rain was coming down harder and harder with the wind faster than any she had ever experienced. As she ran behind a tree Rose slipped tumbling down the small cliff behind it. Rose quickly got up but she felt woozy and didn't get far before she collapsed back into the mud unconscious.
