What to do if you are going on your first date?
The same question that Jang Hui-Soo asked herself as she stared at the bathroom mirror for several minutes now. Ever since last night, she has been anxious at what to wear for her first date with Kim Bong-Seok. Although, she knew now that whatever dress she will wear, her date will like it no matter what.
With a huff, she finally decided to go through with a yellow dress and a white coat since it is still winter. She truly wanted to look good on her first date ever and given that this is Kim Bong-Seok that will take her out, she must look perfect.
Looking at the clock on the wall, she hissed given that 5 minutes more, Kim Bong-Seok will drop by to her apartment. It has been a week since he came back after years of disappearing from everyone. A week filled with catching up about their lives here in the apartment and some activities that involved them kissing or cuddling in bed. It was a safe space for the both of them given that it was just them inside her apartment.
A smile formed on her face when she recalled how he asked her on their first date.
It was yesterday evening as they watched a new show in Disney+ about some teenage romance. They cuddled in bed as Bong-Seok is holding her phone for them to watch. Hui-Soo tried her best not to fall asleep but the fact that he was so warm and cuddly, it was rather a difficult task.
“Are they now going on a date?” She asked, noticing that the male and female leads are now dressed up and meeting each other in the Han River.
“Yeah” Bong-Seok replied as he tenderly kissed her on the forehead, enjoying her apple scented hair because of her shampoo, “He just asked her out. Were you asleep already?”
It was just him teasing her about her tendency to fall asleep whenever they cuddle or watch a show in bed. This always made her blush red out of shyness. As a response, Hui-Soo pulled back from the hug and replied, “I did not. I just closed my eyes for a second and wanted to confirm with you if they are out on their date.”.
Bong-Seok chuckled, “The scene was just minutes ago. How long were you closing your eyes?”
Hui-Soo huffed, “I—I did not. I just closed them for a minute or ---”. She soon felt him hugging her back on a cuddle in bed and kissed her neck.
“I was just teasing, Hui-Soo” Bong-Seok replied tenderly, “You know I don’t mind if you fall asleep. You are probably tired from your work so I understand.”
Hui-Soo pouted as she realized something, “All I do is work nowadays. When are you going to ask me out on a date?”.
The question made Bong-Seok anxious and shy. In his entire existence, he never had asked out anyone for a date. Even when they were just high school students, they were just merely going out a friends but now that their relationship bloomed into something more, he realized his mistake.
“I—I was just” Bong-Seok stuttered, trying to find the right words to ask her out.
“I guess you don’t want to go on a date with me.” Hui-Soo teased him and releasing herself from his embrace. A part of her wants to take it back and continue hugging him but she likes teasing him so much. “You probably too busy or even don’t want to hang out---”
“Go on a date with me tomorrow!” Bong-Seok abruptly mentioned to her.
With that statement alone, Hui-Soo felt butterflies in her stomach once more. It is truly amazing how can one person make you feel giddy or happy with just their words alone. A smile formed on her face as she immediately almost jumped to kiss him on the lips.
A giggle escaped her lips as she felt Bong-Seok surprised by her movements. However, he immediately kissed back with the same passion and vigor that she gave. After a few moments, she felt her back hit a wall of some sort and noticed that they are now floating on top of the ceiling. Given that her entire body is now resting on top of her flying boyfriend, they are now floating and it seems that they reached the ceiling once more.
She pushed back from the kiss and saw a blush on Bong-Seok’s face because of his reaction with her kiss.
“You—You never answered.” It was Bong-Seok’s turn to pout.
Hui-soo chuckled, “Yes! Of course, I’ll go on a date with you tomorrow. Why would I kiss you if I don’t want to go on a date with you?”.
It seems that Bong-Seok realized her sentiment and replied, “Just because…”.
They both chuckled as Bong-Seok levitated them from the air. After a few minutes of reciting the numbers for Pi, they began to float down and sooner than later, continued watching the series on the phone.
That was the exact situation why it led to them going out on a first date. The moment Hui-Soo saw the clock tick at exactly 5:00PM, a knock was heard on the door. A smile crept on her face as she walked to answer the door. It should be her date for the evening.
She opened the door and was shocked to see her boyfriend wearing a white long sleeve shirt with black pants and a black side bag. He looked handsome especially since he styled his hair in a two block which framed his face nicely. Her heart skipped a beat when she noticed his eyes began to take her appearance.
“You look beautiful” Bong-Seok commented, shyly.
Hui-Soo smirked and walked out of her apartment to kiss her boyfriend on the cheeks. “Thank you so much! You look handsome as well, Bong-Seok”.
Bong-Seok nodded shyly as he looked at her while she closed the door to lock it. Eventually, they walked side by side to enter the elevator. While inside, a certain feeling can be seen between them. It was intense as both of them are already in their mid – 20s but technically, this is their very first date ever.
As the elevator went down, Bong-Seok’s hand was fidgeting as he was slowly finding the right time to take her hand. He knew that couples that go on dates should hold hands which his father told him that he learned while watching dramas. At one point, his fingertips collided with hers and they both looked at one another.
With a deep breathe, Bong-Seok finally grabbed Hui-Soo’s hand which made her chuckle at his abrupt way of initiating hand holding.
“We have done a lot of kissing and yet it seems that you are still nervous with mere handholding.” She commented, trying her best to look calm and collected but in reality, her heart was beating so fast.
“I--- I have never been on a date and to be quite honest, I have been wanting to hold your hands ever since we were in school.” Bong-Seok confessed.
In response, Hui-Soo gave their collected hands a squeeze. “Now that we are together, you can always hold my hand if you wish to do it, alright?”
Bong-Seok nodded the moment they heard the elevator ding. They were already in the ground floor. They enjoyed walking on the side walk as a newly couple. They talked about stories that they have not told one another like how Bong-Seok’s mother is now practically buying new clothes to wear in order to be pretty in front of their returned father. Hui-Soo mentioned that she bought gifts for her father and uncle which are now happily spending their time running the chicken shop.
“By the way, where are we going?” Hui-Soo asked as they are now waiting at the bus stop.
“In the city. I have a plan.” Bong-Seok replied with a grin.
Just like always, Bong-Seok paid for Hui-Soo’s bus fair before they greeted the driver of the bus. They talked about Bungaeman who seems to be having his first child now. Given that he’ll have a child soon, they talked how it would probably inherit the electric powers of their friend.
“What are we going to the city?” Hui-Soo asked as she looked at Bong-Seok.
“Just trust me” Bong-Seok smiled.
After a few minutes, they arrived in the heart of the city. Given that it is almost 6:00 PM, the city buzzed with life in the night. The city looked so bright with all the business booming everywhere. Bong-Seok led her to a building and smiled the moment she saw that it was a karaoke place. For 2 hours, they laughed and dance as each of them sang their song on the karaoke machine. Hui-Soo laughed harder the moment she saw Bong-Seok dance EXO songs because as much as he tried his best, she knew that he was a lousy dancer. The fact that he looked so adorable and handsome while dancing saved him for her. It made her love him more.
“Woohh! More more! Sing and dance more, Bong-Seok!” Hui-Soo cheered her boyfriend.
Bong-Seok followed her direction and just made sure that the love of her life would have the best time. He knew to himself that he is a lousy dancer but he dance like his life was dependent on it just to see her smile and laugh. In the end, he was exhausted so he asked if he could sit and it was Hui-Soo’s turn to sing. She chose to sing Strawberry Moon by IU.
“This song is dedicated to someone special” Hui-Soo stated blushing hard as she looked at Bong-Seok smiling at her. She gave it her all as she sang for him. There was a part that said that love feels like floating and it was the truth for the both of them. Even if she does not have the power to float. Being with him made her feel as if she was floating as well. A part of her is exhilarated by the feeling and a small part of her is afraid because of everything but the heavy burden in her heart began to disappear so long as he was with her.
He might have the power to fly because of his emotions but he could also had the power to make her feel as if nothing matters in the world but only them.
The moment the song ended, there was a slight silence as she looked at Bong-Seok who seemed in a daze for a second. He eventually clapped and cheered for her. A second after, she was met with a hug as he kissed her in the cheek.
“You sang so well, Hui-Soo” He smiled.
“I did?” She replied, “Let’s sing more!”
And they did. They sang a lot of songs and the last one they did was a duet of JANNABI’s song, Together. It was the song that he introduced to her before and every time she hears it, all the moments that they had before always flashes into her.
After a few hours of singing, they went outside to go and have a drink in the part near the river. He asked her to wait for a few minutes as he will need to do something. At first she was reluctant but he said that it will be just a few minutes. So, Hui-Soo waited on the side for Bong-Seok who came back after a few minutes with a bag of white plastic that might have been from the convenience store on the side.
“I brought our dinner.” Bong-Seok smiled, “1 plus 1”
Hui-Soo chuckled as she looked at the food inside the plastic bag. It was the same meal that they always shared after school which were two pairs of onigiri, a pair of heated meal, one ice cream with two popsicle sticks, and a pair of coke.
They sat in a bench at the side of the river. The view was amazing especially since the city lights illuminated the night. The view of the river was spectacular and for Hui-Soo, she is having a great time for her first date ever.
“Are you having a good time, Hui-Soo?” Bong-Seok asked as he ate his meal beside her.
Hui-Soo nodded and smiled as she ate as well, “I am. This is amazing.”
“I am glad.” Bong-Seok smiled once more.
It was the truth. She did not need the pretentious meal on a classic restaurant or anything high end. So long as she was with Bong-Seok, she is bound to have a great time. They ate as they laughed when recalling all the moments that they had during the karaoke place. Hui-Soo teased Bong-Seok that he should become an idol. Meanwhile, Bong-Seok replied that he could be a producer instead and eventually teased her that she should be the one to become an idol.
“It is the truth” Bong-Seok stated, “You are nice to people and good to them.”
“You just said the same” Hui-Soo commented.
“You are also pretty” he muttered as he took a bite of his onigiri.
Hui-Soo chuckled, “You just said the same thing before”
“I did?”
“Yes, you did.” She said, “The day we saw our classmate beaten on the side of the road.”
“I remember” He replied, “But don’t change the subject. You can become an idol if you wanted to become one”
“I’ll be an idol if you become a producer.” Hui-Soo smirked, “Maybe in another world, I am a popular actress and you’re the clumsy producer who fell in love with me.”
Bong-Seok agreed and smiled, “Maybe. If you are an idol, I would have done everything for you to notice me.”
“And whatever action you’ll do, I would have probably noticed you.” She added.
Soon after, they ate and talked about a lot of things. It was truly a good time for the both of them. As soon as they finished eating, Bong-Seok opened the popsicle stick for them and divided it into two. He smiled the moment he gave the other one to her.
“1 plus 1” He muttered.
“1 plus 1” She agreed, “Just like us. Bong-Seok and Hui-Soo”
They both blushed and eventually cringed together. A laughter came out from the both of them as they realized that they were acting all lovingly on their first date. They were like any other normal couple who came out to have a date with each other.
It was getting late. Soon after they began to walk on the side of the road in the river. They were the only ones there and they took the time to just spend it with one another.
“I have a present for you” Bong-Seok confessed as he stopped walking. Hui-Soo followed suit as she stood in front of him. “Close your eyes for me.”
Hui-Soo followed his request and closed her eyes. She felt him move closer to her and stood behind her. Later on, she felt a small movement on her neck and she heard him say that she can open her eyes now.
Looking over, she saw a silver necklace and a cloud shaped pendant. Automatically, she smiled and found it a beautiful piece of jewelry.
“It’s beautiful” She said as she turned her body towards him. He was smiling as if pleased that she liked his gift. “But I do not have a gift for you”
Bong-Seok shook his head, “Your smile is already a gift for me. Besides, it is not over yet.”
“What is?”
“I want to give that to you because I’ve already experienced touching the clouds in the sky.” Bong-Seok explained, “I wanted to make you touch the clouds even if I am not there with you. Also… I’ll need you to come with me.”
“To where?” She asked.
“Just follow me.” Bong-Seok said as she dragged her to a darker and secluded area.
“What are we doing here?”
“Step on my foot.” He ordered her, “Hold me tight.”.
She followed suit and stepped on his foot. Their arms are now around one another as they are now locked in a tight embrace.
“Close your eyes again.” Bong-Seok said which she followed.
At first, she did not feel anything but eventually, a cold breeze can be felt around her as if they the winds became more violent. She heard him say to not open it till he says so which he did as she continued holding him close; almost afraid of letting him go.
“Open your eyes.”
Hui-Soo first saw was the stars on the back of Bong-Seok. She blinked a few times before realizing where he brought her. They were up in the sky and above the clouds. She was about to scream but Bong-Seok held her so tightly in the air and she knew that she would not fall so long as she was with him. Looking around, she saw the clouds underneath them and the moon shining brightly on the side.
“Amazing” She whispered.
“Right?” Bong-Seok agreed, “I’ve always wanted to show you how beautiful it is here.”
“Thank you for bringing me here.”
“I also wanted to bring you here because, I wanted to ensure that the cloud pendant that I gave you will also be able to be up here among the other clouds.” He explained, “Basically, the cloud pendant that I gave you became a true cloud in the sky just now.”
“I--- I don’t know what to say” Hui-Soo said.
“You don’t have to say anything.” Bong-Seok smiled.
She knew to herself that she might not be the most expressive person in the world and her words might be disguised as teasing. There was one thing that she is good at which is to express her feelings through actions. In the end, she said thank you and leaned in to kiss him. Bong-Seok leaned in to meet her lips. Right here in the clouds, he can freely kiss her without worrying of hurting her given that they are already floating in the sky.
Meanwhile, Hui-Soo pushed her entire body closer to his because of the cold. It was cold up in the sky but the warmth that generated from his body made it tolerable for her. It made her crave him more aside of his lips. They continued kissing one another while the moon shine brightly as if encapsulating their kiss; making this a key memory that neither one of them will never forget.
It was the best first date ever for Jang Hui-Soo and Kim Bong-Seok.
