“I’ve got you…”
Nica’s voice is soft, warm and comforting. Despite everything her sister is still the one person in the world who can soothe her soul. Barb is curled against Nica like when they were children, soft hair brushed from tearstained cheeks as Barb nestles into her sister’s neck, tightening her grip at her waist. Nica’s own fingers trail through her sister’s hair, her voice softening further.
“I’ve got you Barb, it’s over.”
“M’sorry Nica…”
“Shhh, I don’t care. I don’t care, I’ve got you, that’s all I need, my beautiful big sis.”
Nica swears to herself she will make every day easier, sweeter for her sister. They are both alone now, after all, working as a family unit to raise Barb’s daughter. It’s enough for Nica to have Barb, she’s never needed or wanted anyone else.
