Chapter 1: The case
Even though they, especially Dr. Usaki, were given it their all, getting Ron’s curse under control still proved to be difficult.
The medication helped a great lot, but on a few occasions, the medicine sadly didn’t quite fulfill its wished solution.
This was on of these times.
It was the beginning of winter and on regular days, the temperature would still be mild.
However, over night the temperature dropped so low that some lakes were now covered in a layer of ice.
A sudden cold front.
Toto really hoped it would pass soon. He wasn’t a big fan of cold weather.
He had just arrived at Ron’s apartment after an especially long all-nighter. The only thing he had wished for in that moment were a few quite moments with Ron, drinking hot chocolate and watching one of the many Christmas movies Ron had missed during his five year long isolation. Maybe getting a few hours of sleep as well.
But of course, as soon as Totomaru got a call from Miss Amamiya about a corpse in the frozen river, Ron was filled with excitement.
He sprinted out of his apartment in a heartbeat, leaving Toto to run after him.
The police officer sighed as he remembered the events of this morning.
Now, the duo was standing in front of an ice-cold corpse, the skin nearly having turned blue completely due to the extreme low temperatures it had suffered through in the lake.
It was the corpse of a young woman, around Toto’s age. She wore a green, elegant dress and high heels and her hair was let down, suggesting that she was on her way or on her way back from some kind of formal event. Judging from those brands, she was quite wealthy as well.
Well, Toto was too tired to really think much about the corpse right now.
He was only here because Ron insisted on going.
And surly, the detective genius was having the time of his life again.
Full of determination and excitement (which the detective was only filled with during a case), Ron lay down next to the corpse and started his regular investigation.
________________________________________________
Fast forward, there were three suspects: The victim’s fiancé, the sister of the victim and the best friend of the fiancé.
By now, Toto was quite familiar with the routine.
After Ron had solved the case again, he discussed everything with Toto.
The three suspects were gathered next to the lake, together with miss Amamiya.
As everyone involved had finally arrived, Toto began explaining the case:
“The culprit’s motive was money. The woman, Ito Akita, had wealthy parents and a good paid job herself. The culprit himself had financial problems due to his tendency to gamble, evident by his name being known among most casinos around here. And that again can be connected to his best friend being an owner of one. But because of his addiction there were a lot of people he was in debt with. Simply said, he needed someone wealthy who would give him all the money needed. Ito Akita, being a young, wealthy woman, became victim to his plan. The culprit used her clear love towards him to his advantages. But while Ito Akita loved her fiancé , evident on her engagement ring showing clear signs of frequent use, the culprit didn’t reciprocate her feelings.
On the contrary, he cheated on her - with the victim’s sister. These circumstances lead to a strained relationship. But I suppose it was only after Ito Akita found out about the cheating that she thought about breaking up with him. The culprit and her got into an argument which ended deadly for the victim. She was hit with a broken wine bottle. Evidence for that can be found in the wine stains mixed with blood on the carpet of the couple’s living place, as well as the small glass pieces we found during the investigation.”
Toto sighed. He might not be a genius detective, but even he can detect the fear in the culprits eyes.
Still, he decided to ignore it and continue his explanation. His priority was to get back into the warmth after all.
“ The culprit is a man in his late 20s. He’s a meteorologist which he made advantage of during his crime. As her fiancé, he’s immediately suspicious. In order to clear himself from that, he chose this lake as his fake crime scene. He anticipated the sudden cold front and let the body down into the ice-cold water in this abounded lake. He had hoped that in the morning, when the layer of ice had been created, it wouldn’t be possible to find the corpse under there for a while, considering the fact that the lake was abounded and difficult to find. However, unfortunately for the culprit, he had chosen the exact same lake the victim’s sister, Ito Yuki, likes to walk along on. Therefore, she found the drowned corpse on her morning walk in the early hours of today.”
Totomaru could see Ron being bored again.
Though, this time he can’t really blame him.
The culprit apparently lacked a lot of common sense for such a predictable murder.
And even though, everyone should know who the culprit is by now, Toto still voiced it out:
“Therefore, the culprit of this case is you, Mister Yamamoto”
What happened when, was all to fast for Toto.
Yamamoto tried to defend himself with all kinds of excuses, but before miss Amamiya or Toto could fully catch him, Ron spoke up.
“Drown yourself”
Toto felt icy shivers run down his spine.
“People who committed as many sins as you have, have no right to live in this world.”
“What do you-“, the culprit tried to protest but was cut short when the curse took its effect.
Toto only had time to react on pure instinct this time.
He sprang after the culprit trying to catch the other before he would jump into the ice hole.
But unfortunately, the young police officer didn’t anticipate the ice slipperiness.
He slipped up on the ice and fell together with the culprit into the ice-cold water.
