Work Text:

This wasn't how it was supposed to go. He was supposed to recover fully fine, he was supposed to be back at work by now, drawing at his desk for hours, meeting with clients, redoing his precious designs, yet here he was. Wasting his time away in an uncomfortably hard hospital bed with bandages all around his head.

He’d been attacked by a jealous architect on his way back from the desert, caught by surprise he didn't have time to dodge the first blow. Blow that into his head. With some luck he’d survived but the head injury infected and it resulted in an eye infection. One so bad he couldn't believe the fact that he may never see again.

A gentle hand rested on his shoulder, scaring him out of his thoughts. “Time to get you home, Kaveh '' said a voice, Alhaitham his brain supplied. The man that was supposed to hate him showed an uncharacteristic amount of gentleness. Not even coming to bug him about the rent.

They stumbled their way back to their place, Alhaitham helping him sit down on the bed and giving him a bowl of soup. Eating slowly his mind began to wonder. What could he achieve as a blind architect? It's not like he would be able to see what he would create. The chances he'd recover his eyesight were very slim.

Archon he hopes he will recover there's nothing else he would be able to do if he did go blind. He’d only be a burden to Alhaitham. Who deserves to find a gentle woman who could deal with him, someone that won't drag him down to depths of hell over a simple mixup.

“...- Regrettably we won't be able to recover any amount of eyesight. We ….” NO. no nonononono this can't be true. There must have been a mistake! They- he could see. He will be able to see once they’d take the forsaken bandage of his eyes. He’d be able to return to normality. “..veh, Kaveh are you there?” he heard Alhaitham say. He turned his head towards him. “Can they take the bandages off?” He asked, knowing that his love was probably panicking underneath there. Even he would panic too if he was in that situation. The other gives a subtle nod.

While Alhaitham was taking his bandages off, Kavehs mind was in overdrive. As he felt the last of the bandages come off he could feel his eyes opening yet he couldn't see anything. It was true he will not be able to see anything ever again.

—------

Days passed in a blur. He didn't get up from bed, he argued with Alhaitham everytime he would bring him food and water. What could he do now that he couldn’t see? He was sure his clients would come crawling towards him, asking for their projects, and once they’d known the great light of Kshahrewar was no more.

That he was no more. That he’d lost all he’d worked so hard for. Now moraless, jobless and sightless he could not find a way out of this. He wasn't sure how much longer Alhaitham would tolerate him existing in his house with no income and with no ways of paying rent or even helping around the house.

The second day he’d tried getting up from bed only to trip on something and face plant on the floor. He was truly useless now. He’ll need to ask Alhaitham to tell him when clients will start knocking at his door, so that he can deal with them himself. He shouldn’t burden him more.

His appetite also grew less and less with each passing day, Alhaitham growing more and more worried with each unfinished or refused meal. He’d begun to miss how bright the other shone but he didnt know how to help. At least he thought he could leave him alone about pointless rent and payment for food. If he could provide basic life necessities he will do so until he’ll perish himself.

Days turned to weeks, weeks to months and he still would rarely leave his bed. After several arguments he’d started eating full meals despite how nauseous it would make him. He still was barely alive, not doing much. His body lost its muscles, his face turned white and sickly, his eyes had darker and uglier eye bags, he'd stopped dressing and stuck to loose hoodies and sweatpants, his once luscious hair was brittle and dulled.

He wasn't who he was. The clients have stopped asking for him months ago, well more like they were appalled by his appearance. They thankfully didn't ask for refunds and took his half finished projects, hopefully to be finished by someone who could do the justice.

He knew he was falling apart, that he’s doing damage to himself but he didn't have the energy. Everyday was a fight to exist, one where a voice would tell him that he isn't worth anything anymore. His friends have stopped caring about him. He is now alone in this world.

Alone to suffer in darkness. Alone to exist and to perish. He now understands his mother, Loneliness is a cruel feeling, persisting even as he hears Alhaitham make another soup in the kitchen just a few steps away. He knows he pushed away his friends, in fear that they’ll hate him for his liability, but in reality be misses them

The sarcastic remarks of Tighnari, the bad jokes Cyno would say or even the quiet presence of Alhaitham. He doesn't understand why he is still allowed to live in this house but he knows that he is not living. That he may never will be again. That is the fate of him.

Next morning his body will be found, declared dead for his sorrows he could not bear.
