A Requited Epiphany

Summary:

Jin gets stood up, but that's okay because something better hits him.

Work Text:

Again.

Jin has already checked his phone four times in the last five minutes.

Hoseok was supposed to be here by now. But Hoseok seems to have other plans because he is already 25 minutes late to their date. Usually, Jin wouldn't have waited this long for a guy to show up. Before he would have waited maybe five minutes and would have ditched the guy in favor of saving face. However, his mom set this up and he doesn't want her to look bad in front of her book club friends. Hoseok didn't seem like the tattling type, but he also didn't seem like the ditching type. And it's not only so his mom would look good in front of Mrs. Jung, but he's honestly kind of maybe a little desperate.

He's already 25 and has yet to find his mate. He hasn't nuzzled his nose into that perfect scent that knows how to affect him. He hasn't cradled a delicate warmth meant to soothe, comfort, love, or arouse him. The alpha in him wants to devour and protect his omega or beta, and Jin just wants somebody to love him and be with him.

He reaches for his phone once again as it sits face up on the table. It didn't vibrate or light up to notify him of a new message, but he can't help but reach for it and push the circular button and unlock his phone.

Nothing. No new messages. No new messages from Hoseok. The last message he got from the guy was a text saying he was excited and looking forward to their date. And Jin glares at his screen because obviously he wasn't that excited or he would have been here by now.

He lets out a frustrated sigh. The loud exhale grabs the attention of a couple enjoying their dinner a few feet away from him. He bows his head slightly in apology for disturbing them, but he doesn't care much. He's ready to call it quits, but he's decided to wait just a bit longer just in case Hoseok pops in at the last minute. He can't help to acknowledge the gnawing deep inside of him that wants Hoseok to be the one for him.

But before he can plan out a life with this guy he has yet to meet face to face, his phone finally lights up. His hand scrambles to grab at it and he hits his knuckles on the table's edge, the deep red cloth doing very little to ease the red it's painted on his pale, and now, stinging skin. He's a man on a mission right now so he brushes it aside and unlocks his phone.

Can't make it. Sorry.

For a minute, Jin just stares at his phone waiting for the words to change into something less detached and more encouraging. Knowing that wasn't going to happen, he scoffed and rolled his eyes as he locked his phone and not so gently dropped it on the table. The same couple from before looks at him again, but this time he actually paid them no regard - this time he really couldn't be bothered with caring.

Another sharp exhale that was void of emotion and he rubbed his hands over his face a few times to relax and calm himself. His eyes caught the glass of lemon water the waitress brought over a half hour ago. He watches as the condensation drips down the glass, reminding him of how long it has been sitting with him - he offers a low self-deprecating laugh before he pushes out his chair enough for his legs to free, grabs his jacket from where it was hanging off his chair, and walks towards the exit as he weaves between chairs, tables, and happy diners.

He's speed walking like a professional athlete right now because all he wants is to get back to his apartment and binge eat whatever it is his kitchen houses and bang on Namjoon's door so he can join him on this wallowing session on their couch. He wants his best friend and roommate to make him feel better and help him forget another lost chance of finding his soulmate.

In his disappointment, frustration, and annoyance, he fails to see the man that is not bothering to look at where he is going and in their equally distracted minds, their bodies collide into each other. Jin falls back and lands heavily on his ass; he can practically feel the bruise already forming and hopes his pants aren't torn or damaged because these are his favorite black slacks that make his legs and ass look divine. He's already mourning their loss because if his ass cheeks feel this damaged, the pants have to be in much worse condition.

He hears a groan in the air and knows it wasn't him that made that noise so he looks up and sees a figure in pretty much the same position he is in mirrored in front of him. And now that he is remembering where he is and what had happened, he shakes his head free of his train wreck of thoughts and breathes in deeply so that he can begin talking. But instead of breathing in simple air so his lungs and voice could properly function, it feels as if he is breathing in life - as if the air became thick with possibilities, happiness, comfort, companionship, love. And suddenly he knows. He knows this guy in front of him is the reason why his nostrils are flaring, trying to harbor that wonderful scent deep into his lungs and being; knows that the reason his mouth feels like it is both salivating and drying is because it desires and anticipates; knows that whatever happens in the future, this man in front of him needs to be there for anything to ever matter. He knows that this stranger his heart has just collided with is the one he's been searching for. The mate that can be the one he nuzzles his nose into so that he could breathe in the perfect scent that will know how to affect him. He can be the one he cradles the delicate warmth of that will soothe, comfort, arouse, and love him. The omega that his alpha will devour and protect - the one he wants to love and be loved by. He now matters to Jin and will always matter to him.

"Hello," Jin hears the sweet voice say to him as he watches the lips of a soft pink, that even the street lamps can't hide, stretch into a wide smile meant to blind with the pearly white teeth shining at him. Jin knows that he feels it too, feels this connection because the other doesn't apologize nor look alarmed at the alpha that is still and sitting so close to him that their warmth is being shared. He knows that Jin is not a threat, nor would he ever be one. Jin can tell that the other knows that he'll be protected, sheltered, comforted, and loved by him. "My name is Jungkook." And the soft exhale of words he lets out is one of satisfaction and cheerfulness.

Jin now thinks he's in trouble. That smile was enough to blind him and the soft sounds that come from those perfect lips will surely be the death of him, but it would be a most pleasant death, of that he is sure because he's never felt his heart beat this erratically or his mind jumble and clear at the same time or his breath hitch to an almost deadly stop. Yes, he's most definitely in trouble, but he knows Jungkook will be the one to get him out of that trouble. Jungkook will be the one to ground him. Jungkook will be the omega to his alpha and the air to his lungs and the blood to his veins and the beat to his heart. Jungkook will be the one and be his all and be his love and just be his

It's no longer just Jin.

It's now Jin and Jungkook.

And he knows his name has never sounded so good with another.
