Rabi looked up to Shirogane, she was everything Rabi wished to be. She could easily speak her mind, she was outgoing, she could easily make friends. Although Rabi didn’t care much for people, she still felt lonely sometimes. After all, her only friends were Alexandra and Asahi. Rabi wished, even if it was small, that she could be such an amazing person as Shirogane was.
One day Rabi was sitting on the rooftop, it was her favorite place to go when everything felt like it was crushing her. It was a nice little spot for her. While Rabi was busy looking out to the sky she could hear footsteps, she knew whose they were.
“Himuro-senpai?” a mysterious voice said. Rabi smiled, she knew it was Shirogane. She could recognize her from her footsteps. She paid close attention when it came to things about Shirogane, she was her dearest friend after all.
“Friend”. A strange word for Rabi. She had never had one before Shirogane due to her being sick most of her childhood. Rabi didn't know how to act around her very first friend at first. Would Shirogane find her weird? Would she run off never to see Rabi again? Would she bully her until she moved schools? All very real and scary thoughts Rabi had, but she got over those thoughts after spending more time with Shirogane. She could act as herself and Shirogane didn’t care. This was what it was like to finally have a friend, and she would never let go of this feeling.
Rabi loved Shirogane more than anything, she cherished their relationship more than anything. Well, she didn't love her in a romantic sense, or maybe she did. She wasn't exactly sure which it was. Feelings don't come easy to Rabi, they were too complicated for her liking. Rabi couldn't name her feelings to Shirogane. Love, admiration, longing, happiness. It was too hard for her,
“Oh, Shirogane. It seems you also have run away from those crushing feelings as well?” Rabi asked
Shirogane smiled, “Of course, I can't always put up with our classmates. It gets tiring trying to act perfect all the time. You seem like you know how it feels.”
Rabi shocked her head, “I’m not like you at all, Shirogane. I do not have many people who look out after me, you have many people. That is where we differ from, Shirogane.”
Shirogane smiled, “I knew you would say that, You really are interesting Himuro-senpai. You are the only one I don't have to try to act around. I feel like I can be my true self around you.”
Rabi knew she was the only one Shirogane trusted to be her authentic self, Shirogane had told her that time after time. She was happy knowing she saw a side of Shirogane no one else did. Maybe Shirogane shared her same feelings. The feeling of loneliness or the feeling that only one person could understand how she truly felt.
“I see.. Shirogane, do you ever look at the stars?” Rabi said looked out at the sky. Even if the only star out during the day was the sun, she still felt as if the stars never left. She felt like the stars looked over her, it gave her a sense of comfort. The stars and shirogane were the only ones she felt understood her.
“Hm. I do sometimes, but they don't exactly make me feel any different. Theyre the same as just seeing the sun out in the daytime.” Shirogane said.
“The stars watch us all, the moment it turns night the begin their routine of watching over us. They dance along with us all as we live our life. They seem empty, but they have more joy than any other being.”
Shirogane paused. “I guess the stars do watch us, but I feel as if the moon is truly what watches over us.”
Rabi smiled, “What exactly makes you say that, Shirogane?”
“Well.. the moon comes out during the night. The sun watches over us during the day, and the moon looks over us at night. The shadows we see are from the moon hugging us and filling everything. From the people, to the objects that fill our world. The moon does that for us.”
Rabi nodded and looked back out to the sky. She loved hearing Shirogane talk, it made her happy. Anything Shirogane said brought happiness to Rabi. Maybe she was in love.
“I think we are like the sun and moon.”
“Hm? Can you explain Himuro-senpai?”
Rabi nodded. “Well, we are polar opposites. I stick to myself and my emotions are deactivated, i don't show them nor do i feel them sometimes. You shine brightly through everyone's life. You make those who feel alone no longer alone. You make sure people know they're wanted. You truly are a sun, Shirogane. You showed me that my life isn't so bleak anymore. I truly thank you for that,”
Shirogane paused for a moment. She didn't know that Rabi truly felt that way. It felt…. Nice. She's never felt that way towards anyone before.
“I would also like to thank you, Himuro-senpai. I've never felt like I belong somewhere until you came in. You're the only one I don't have to pretend to like. You mean a lot to me. I mean this when I say this, but you are the only one I'm interested in.”
Rabi blushed and looked away, “That makes it seem more romantic than not, Shirogane.”
Shirogane smiled, “Of course I mean it romantically. Who else would I say that to?”
“Oh… I’m.. I’m not sure what to say.”
Shirogane panicked for a moment. “Oh! I'm sorry if this came out as a shock to you… I don't actually mean it like that! I meant-”
Rabi smiled and hugged Shirogane. “I like you too, Shirogane. You mean the world to me. I promise you that.”
Shirogane smiled and hugged Rabi back. “You also mean the world to me, Rabi.”
“Oh. You called me by my first name. I see you truly are close to me, you even love me back..”
“Of course I mean it. Who wouldn't love you?”
Maybe the stars were looking out for these two. Love doesn't come easy, but it's worth it in the end
