Work Text:
The bed shifts, and Gun blinks awake blearily. “Tinn?”
“Hi darling,” comes the answer, soft and familiar. “Sorry I woke you up.”
“Mm,” Gun hums and turns around, searching for her girlfriend. “Tired?”
The moonlight is just bright enough for Tinn’s face to be visible. “Yeah,” she says, smiling - but it's not quite her usual smile, lips curving down. “Can we cuddle?”
Gun pauses. “Yeah,” she replies, opening her arms even as her brows furrow. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?” Usually, Tinn wouldn’t ask before initiating - she’d latch onto Gun and ignore her halfhearted protests.
Crawling towards her, Tinn tangles their limbs together and pulls Gun close, burrowing her face in her neck. Reaching up to stroke her girlfriend's hair, Gun waits.
When she answers, Tinn doesn’t look up. “There were so many people today. I couldn’t - save them.”
Ah.
“I’m scared, Gun. Maybe it’s all for nothing.” Tinn’s voice breaks. “Maybe I’m not - I don’t know what to do.”
“It’s okay, Tinn,” Gun murmurs into the darkness. “You’re okay.”
The hand around her waist tightens.
Closing her eyes, Gun breathes. She can’t help Tinn at work, no matter how much she wishes she could - but she can do this. “Even if you save one person, that’s more than enough. You can’t save everyone and everything and that’s okay.”
Pulling back slightly, she takes Tinn’s face in her hands. She looks so soft and vulnerable Gun’s heart breaks. “But the people you do save, Tinn? They’re more grateful to you than anyone else in this world.”
Eyes fluttering shut, Tinn nods. “I know, but it still -” She exhales, deep and shuddering, but doesn’t cry. “Maybe I’m not doing enough.” She reaches up to press her hand against Gun’s, turning her face into the touch.
Gun swallows. There are no words that will magically stop Tinn from hurting so much, she knows this. But - “Just the fact that you wake up every single day and work so hard to save all these people is - it’s incredible,” she says, and she means it from the bottom of her heart. “You’re incredible, Tinn.”
Tinn looks at her, eyes shining, and - something in her expression breaks. She squeezes her eyes shut, and tears leak out of the corners of her eyes. “I’m sorry,” she says, though it’s not to Gun. “I’m so sorry.”
Pulling her back into a hug, Gun tries not to cry. She’s so proud of her girlfriend she doesn’t think she could ever put it into words. She’s so glad Tinn trusts her enough to be this vulnerable, to cry in her arms - this way, at least Gun can provide some comfort. She can do something.
She presses a soft kiss to Tinn’s head and hopes it’s enough.
