Chapter 1: The Interlude

Notes:

Repost if something I wrote as a child, so proud of how I’ve grown as a person

Chapter Text

THIS IS THE PROLOGUE

GOOD LUCK, TRAVELER.

WE ALL WAITED,
huddled together in the darkness. It’s was cold, or at least it was what I thought the cold would feel like. The only light we could see came from a blue sphere in the center of the room. It was dotted with green and white, from what I gathered, it was called “earth” (er-th).

And quite the name that was, quite the invention, too. Our group of low ranked angels all shouldered and pushed at each other to get a closer look. We all seemed to think curiously and fondly of  this new world.

Some of the angels have been sharing quite the rumors, rumors of The Father loving the creatures on earth more then he loves us.

But that can’t be true, we are His first children! Why would we be here, why would we be built to love and follow Him, if only to be second favorite?

Never mind these rumors, for we are about to witness a spectacle. A new world, if you will. The first generation, the first “humans” (hee-oo-muh-ns).

Just above the earth, a large and powerful angel appeared, her halo seeming to glow with the brightness of the very suns she helped create. Her long flowing hair pouring around her resembling the foam of the deepest sea

“ I call forth, Maxwell.” Her deep voice boomed all around the room, leaving some of the smaller angels trying to keep themselves steady, others picking themselves off the ground.

After a few moments, a bright and sunny angel skipped over to the angel that called for him.

“ Right-o! Let’s get to work!” The angel, as was stated earlier, was quite the bright and happy thing. He asked too many questions, but we can move past that for this moment, for this ceremony, for this spectacle of an event.

The angel Maxwell seemed to float happily to the right-hand side of the large beautiful angel in the middle.

She looked upon him and nodded, approving him as a helping-hand for this moment all these who witness won’t soon forget. That makes him a creature they shall also not soon forget.

“Joseph!” The Center Angel called a second name, the final name to be called.

A few surprised gasps and whispers broke out amongst the crowd, some knowing Joseph, others not knowing him. Which did mean that he was unheard of, unimportant, and unworthy.

“ Silence from all! Unless you want me to steal your tongues!” The Center Angel boomed to the crowd, the crowd obediently went from silent.

The angel known as Joseph took a cautious step forward. He looked around, we could all feel the nervousness radiating towards him.

A few of the angels around him had to push him forward, for the longer he takes the more we feared the angel in the center would grow angry. Joseph finally stepped forward, and stood at the left-hand side of the Center Angel, and she looked upon him and nodded. Maxwell looked around the side of the Center Angel, and gave a welcoming smile to Joseph.

The Center Angel put her hand over the earth, her pointer finger and her thumbs together, and she lifted her arm up and a golden string appeared from he earth.

Maxwell the Angel signaled to Joseph to mirror his movements, and they mimicked The Center Angel’s motion, and soon there were a total of three golden strings.

“ These,” The Center Angel began. “ These are the first life strings of the new race. The human race.”

She looked at the two angels at her sides, making history, and she looked upon the golden strings they held, knowing she chose the right companions.

“ May they never be cut, may they only end when our God wills it.” She boomed, her voice full of affection.

She looked upon the bright and curious eyes of the crowd, and her eyes that were full of affection seemed to grow still with fearful shock.

Within the crowd of approving faces, she could see the look of hatred burning into her group and into the earth.

One of the hateful angels leaped forward, aiming to destroy Maxwells string.

Maxwell used one of his many wings to shove the hateful angels aside, growing protective of his golden string of human life.

Some angels from around the room grabbed the hateful angel, and held him down.

“ Death! That is the only way! We must kill the humans!” It barked out, still writhing from underneath all the angels keeping him down.

A new angel appeared, running to The Center Angel, and it was almost apprehended but The Center Angel signaled that this was just a messenger angel.

“ Miss!! A war has begun outside!!!” It took a breath in, his body shaking from what he witnessed just a few moments prior.

“ They are jealous, they wish to harm the humans. They say The Father has left us!” It grabbed on to her shoulders, though this angel was significantly smaller, it’s panic and fear gave it strength.

“ Tell us it isn’t true. Tell us!” It seemed to hiss to her desperately. He searched her baffled eyes, her seemingly ever  extensive knowledge seemed to run short.

Next thing we know, we are battling our own in a bloody and cruel war.

The clouds seemed to be tainted with gold, the blood from our own.

We cast them out, and we sent them to the earth.

But amongst the bodies and pure golden blood, a small angel remained huddled with another.

The small angel was crying, for he had lost one of his dearest friends. The Center Angel walked to him, her robes drenched in gold, and her right hand seemed to glitter with it. She offered her clean hand to help him up, and at this he looked at her with his tear filled eyes, and told her to go.

He said he wouldn’t leave his friend, and she had larger things to handle.

It was growing dark, and she knew what he was saying was true. She best be off, but not before she offers one last attempt at helping this angel she did not know.

“ What do they call you, child?” She said, her looming shadow beginning to disappear in the night that made the sky dark for the first time in heavens history.

“ He was afraid of the dark.” The angel said, not seeming to acknowledge her question.

“ ‘spose then it is best he now won’t ever see it here.” The angel let out a grief filled chuckle, a tear drop landing on the corpse of the fallen soldier he had lost.

She let him have another moment before she asked again.

“ I am Alexander.” He replied shakily, cradling his lost friend.

“ You will be gifted, for your loss and your bravery.” The Center Angel offered her fist forward, her hand opening to reveal what looked it be a monocle.

He looked up, his eyes filled with tears just balancing on the edge of his eyelids, so not another tear would fall.

“ I don’t need the glasses. A need a light. He is afraid of the dark.”

“ Are you referring to your dead brethren?”

“ He’s afraid of the dark! I need a light.”

The Center Angel took pity on him. She pushed that he take the monocle, for it held powers that would serve him greatly in his future. He took it reluctantly.

She opened her other hand, the one decorated with a golden liquid, and she offered a torch to this sad Alexander fellow.

He took it quickly and thankfully, and he held it near to his friend, but he wouldn’t hold it too close so it did not burn him.

The Center Angel wished she could help him through his grief, but there is only one more treacherous angel to cast out. She figured it would be better to dispose of all of them before anyone else was hurt. That is the justice she will serve for her fallen brethren, and for this Alexander.

She walked what to her seemed like to long, and soon she finally arrived near the edge of the clouds, where a group of angels, also covered in gold, stood arguing and shouting.

“ What,” She began, all the crowd now looking to her for leadership. “ is the meaning of this?”

“ He is one of them!”

“ He questioned!”

“ End him!”

She pushed some of the angry angels aside, and she looked upon the angel the spoke of.

When she looked upon it, she already knew she was going to make a poor decision, for the angel she looked upon was Maxwell.

He was covered in bruises and his own golden blood, one of his eyes being unable to open so to some of his wounds. Some of his wounds to being so cruel, she couldn’t imagine that her own brethren could have dealt him with such severe injuries.

“ You… you helped with the strings of human life. And you wish to kill them?” She said, looking upon him. Somewhat mirroring what she did not too long ago in the past.

“ All I did was ask questions.” His anger seemed to grow when he looked up and saw her. “ALL I EVER DID WAS ASK QUESTIONS!” At this, he lunged towards her. The group of angels that were keeping him in place yanked him back.

“ All I ever did was wonder…” He said in defeat. “if He didn’t send me away, why do you have the right?” Maxwell questioned.

She moved closer to him and places her pointer finger under his chin, and lifted his head to look at her.

“ You are quite the disappointment, you and Joseph were to be the best.”

He started asking why, what she was talking about, he just began to sputter out words as though he was trying to distract her from hurting him like the others seemed to have done.

“ Please. I wouldn’t ever hurt one of those human things. I would never dare harm our Fathers new children, please I just wanted to know. I just asked!”

At every word he took he moved closer to her, his desperation beaming off of him like his happiness and sunshine did prior to this moment.

She took another look at him, and she shut her eyes and looked away.

“ Send him down.”

NO! PLEASE! I DID NOTHING WRONG! PLEASE!” The angels holding him dragged him back, he kicked and flailed and writhed, he screamed how he doesn’t want to go. He doesn’t want to leave his home.

After what seemed like a lifetime, they got him to the edge of the clouds, and with one last scream of desperation from Maxwell, they threw him off the edge.
