Work Text:

The sun rises.

Pink and orange and yellow and red and purple.

Perfect beautiful brushstrokes, swathes of exquisite colour painted with ruthless abandon.

Someone up there likes you.

How wonderful. How absolutely wonderful.

David opens his eyes.

An autumnal haze shrouds the street in soft warm light.

It kisses the side of his face gently.

The good side.

The bad side sticks unpleasantly to the cold pavement. It hurts.

He presses further into the ground.

He stares unafraid into the sky.

How utterly wonderful.

The sharp buildings lean over him, cutting into his line of sight. Penning him in, slicing his view of the sky down into a strange puzzle piece.

A crow floats down on shadowy wings.

David watches it descend.

It lands with no sound on the mask lying beside his hand.

The crow looks at David and David looks back at it.

It pecks at the eyehole of his mask.

David waves his hand at it, his body still firmly cemented to the pavement.

That’s my face, asshole.

The crow shoots him a disparaging look and flaps away.

Out of sight, out of mind.

His mask stares blankly at him. The crow’s beak left no trace on its unblemished stillness.

What’re you looking at?

David stretches his hand out. It’s ever so slightly out of reach. His fingertips just about brush the inhumane face, lighter than a lover’s soft kiss.

His hand curls back towards him.

Whatever.

He doesn’t need the stupid thing anyway.
