Work Text:

Shopping alone in Devildom used to be an intimidating experience. But the locals had long since gotten the point that you were the pactmate of demons much bigger and scarier than them. Now the problem you had when you went shopping was that you were the target of overeager sales demons. Sure it was great that they usually offered you special deals in hopes of currying favour with the Avatars, but sometimes you just wanted to browse without them hovering around like a swarm of insects.

Today you were trying to buy a present for Mammon and you were struggling. It wasn’t because of the lack of selection. Majolish had everything you could possibly want. It wasn’t even because you didn’t know what he liked. You had spent more than enough time with your demon that you knew his tastes well. The problem was that Mammon had no self control and picked up whatever he wanted the moment they caught his eye assuming Goldie wasn’t confiscated. And, right now, thanks to Lucifer, she was. You knew you had a narrow window. Just enough time to check out the new releases before Mammon got her back and indulged all his whims.

You leaned closer to the jewelry display, and you could feel someone walking up behind you. Irritated, you turned and hissed. “I said-” You lost the rest of your sentence when it was the demon on your mind.

“What were ya tellin’ em?” Mammon asked. “Were they bein’ pushy? I can teach them all ‘bout boundaries.” He cracked his knuckles and glared menacingly at the store’s staff.

You couldn’t help laugh at the notion that Mammon would be able to teach anyone anything about that topic, since doors and occasionally locks weren’t enough to keep him away.

“Whatcha lookin’ at?” He stepped up beside you and looked down at the case. “Ooh…now ain’t that a gorgeous piece?”

“You looking at the watch or the ring?” You asked, eyes trained on his expression.

“The ring is nice, but I got one with bigger stones an’ better clarity. Now the watch-” He whistled his appreciation. “That’s a work of art.” Your hopeful smile died almost as soon as it was born, because Mammon had more to say. “Gonna have ta have a word with the designer. He shouldn’t be sellin’ knock-offs of somethin’ I commissioned. Not unless he’s given’ me a cut that is…”

Your shoulder slumped in disappointment and Mammon took that to mean that there was nothing that had caught your eye. “Come on, I know a better place.” He tugged your arm, and you had no choice but to follow him.

Well, if he was showing you his favourite places you’d have to find something he liked, right?

Wrong.

“Ain’t this somethin’? I’ve got it in red an’ I love it.”

“These are the hottest sneaks in Devildom right now. I mean even Asmo will wear them. I’ve got ‘em in green and black. Hey, just curious, what colour do ya like?”

“Got this one comin’ next week! What do ya think? It comes in yer size! I think you’d look good- I mean anyone would look good in it-”

It didn’t matter what it was. Every single thing you looked at he either owned, or it was on its way or he hated it. There was nothing you could find to give him. You sighed in frustration and stalked away from your demon. It was hopeless.

“Dammit! This is hopeless. Why do ya have ta be so hard to shop for?” Mammon growled, and you turned to see an equally irritated expression on his face. “Don’t ya like anything?”

“You think I’m hard to shop for?” You exclaimed, blinking at him in confusion. “Me? Your the one that owns one of everything!”

Mammon looked like you had hit him. “Wait- ya wanted ta get me something? Really?”

“I like you, dumbass! Of course I want to get you something!” You shouted, ignoring the stares of the sales demons who were smart enough to give the pair of you space. “But you already have everything!”

“Ya like me?” Mammon’s smile widened and his eyes were bright. “Really?”

“Yes.”

Mammon stepped closer to you. “Can you say that again?”

“I like you.”

Your demon pulled you into a tight hug. You felt his chest rumble with soft laughter. “Then I guess I really do have everything.”

Notes:

Okay, I missed a lot of days. I don't know if I will catch up or not. I ended up with an infection and needed a tooth pulled. There was no focus, and I'm still feeling crap. But I'm kinda back?

This was October 11's prompt - Shopping.
