Chapter 1
The department of mysteries was an interesting place, as far as any of the unspeakables or their records could tell it had been around longer than written history. The ministry of magic was actually built on this location in order to maintain the secrets within the department, and to make sure that it was kept under control.
Not the entire department of mysteries was this old of course, over time the department was built upon storing centuries, even millennia of knowledge and dangerous objects. It was just the one room, honestly just one object that was said to be the center of it all. The veil is located in what the unspeakables referred to as the chamber of death. The veil was an odd object; great looming curtains went over its swirling center or black grays and reds. It was said to be the gateway to the underworld, once you went in you were as good as dead, no one leaves the underworld once they enter, Orpheus made that clear.
However things are not always as it seems, over the centuries the idea of the veil has shifted, not to the public of course, but the unspeakables knew the truth, the veil was not a gateway to the underworld, although of course it could be led there as well, it was a portal to many different realities, created centuries ago by the fates themselves to help fix any realities they break. The department of mysteries keeps this secret of course, should the general public know that the veil randomly spits out people who possess build it yourself destinies it would cause a little bit of public unrest to say the least.
These veil people, dimensionals as the unspeakables call them, or as far as the general public knows “the Peverell family” tended to be very powerful, and important individuals. The three brothers for example Cadmus, Antioch, and Ignotus Peverell were the most recent people the veil spat out, and they were said to be the most powerful necromancers to ever walk the planet. As such the department of mysteries kept very close eyes on the veil, after all if even other government officials found out about the dimensionals existence, their whole purpose could be twisted, the dimensionals were meant to make the world a better place, but politicians as we all know would not use them in such a way.
So once every couple hundred years when the veil decides the world needs improving, the department of mysteries was prepared to greet these people and get them new identities as members of the Perevell family and have them on their way into the world as soon as possible, just as was the case on May 26th 1988 when three friends who just a second ago were in their beds found themselves standing in a white void.
