Work Text:
After Tim’s fake proposal with Ashley, he broke up with her. They were not on the same page and he knew what he wanted in the long run. He was also left with a non-refundable trip to Hawaii. He knows who he wants his future to be with, but it feels impossible. He wants to bring the same person to Hawaii.
This person is his current aide and former rookie, Lucy Chen. She was everything to him, yet he thinks it’s one sided. They don’t talk about these feelings, but they really should. It’s been a relatively easy shift, but things are quiet. Lucy is never quiet which means something’s on her mind. She doesn’t answer when asked what’s wrong.
Tim shrugs it off and heads to their next call, a domestic. Lucy tells dispatch “7-Adam-100 responding.”
They arrive on scene and can hear the man screaming.
“Okay we stay together Lucy.” Tim says.
They knock on the door and the woman answers.
“Ma’am we are here about a disturbance.” Lucy says gently.
“Everything is fine officers.” She goes to shut the door. Lucy steps closer and the door suddenly swings open and Lucy goes flying backwards, down the stairs.
Thankfully backup has arrived and they can deal with the husband Tim has just arrested and the wife.
“Lucy!” He yells running down to her. “Lucy.”
Her eyes slowly open. “Mmm Tim.” She mumbles. “Hurts.”
“Hey I know. The paramedics are almost here and will get you to the hospital. I’ll meet you there.”
“No Tim. Don’t leave me.”
Grey arrives just as the paramedics are loading Lucy. He can see she wants Tim to go, so he nods his head at him.
“I’m right here Luce.” He holds her hand. He knows she hit her head and he hates that. He couldn’t protect her. He needs to tell her how he feels.
“Tim…”
“Shhh baby I’m here.” He whispers, not realizing he let that slip out. Once they get to the hospital, they tell Tim to wait in the waiting room. He hates this. Lucy didn’t want him to leave, but he had no choice. Angela shows up not much later with a change of clothes. He quickly changes and hands the bag back to Angela who has to get back to the station.
“Sergeant Bradford.” A nurse comes out. “Lucy wants you with her. Would you please come back?”
He follows the nurse and sees Lucy laying in the bed in pain.
“Tim.” She mumbles out.
“I’m here Lucy.”
“She hit her head during the fall and sustained a concussion as well as a little bleeding. We want to keep her overnight for observation. Her wrist is sprained and she has some bruises as well.
Tim stays with Lucy overnight and when she gets discharged he insists she comes to his house. She finally agrees and he settles her in his bed.
“It’s your bed—“ She starts to say.
“No Luce. You need rest.” He has her hand in his and rubs it gently. Lucy takes her hand and puts it on his face. She wipes a tear he didn’t know was there.
“What is it Tim? Please talk to me.”
“I thought I lost you again Lucy.” He says so quietly.
“I’m not going anywhere.”
“Not just that. I broke up with Ashley. She didn’t want what I did, but my heart belongs to someone else.” He is staring at her as he says it. “It’s always been you Lucy. It’ll always be you. Seeing you hurt, opened my eyes. I can’t lose you. I don’t want anyone else. I was too scared to tell you, but I can’t hide how I feel anymore.”
“Tim, I can’t lose you either. We really need to work on communication. I’ve had feelings for you for so long. If you want me, I’m yours.”
He presses his lips to hers, careful not to hurt her. “Even better than I imagined.”
She kisses him once more. They both fall asleep holding each other. The next day Tim is staring at Lucy.
“Tim? You okay?”
“I am. I have a question for you.”
“What?” She asks.
“Will you come to Hawaii with me? The tickets are non refundable and it would be good to get away.”
“If I can get the time off, I’d love to.”
He scratches the back of his head. “The times been approved. I asked Grey about it and he said it was fine.”
Lucy smirks. “You really were counting on me saying yes.”
“I had no doubt.” He teases. She puts her hand in his face.
“Thank you Tim.” She says genuinely. He puts his arms around her and hugs her.
“So we leave in two days.” He tells her.
“Oh. I have so much to do!” She starts rattling off. “What are you looking at me like that for?” When she realizes Tim is staring.
“Tamara’s helping pack so you wouldn’t have to worry. I may have asked for her help.”
“You’ve thought of everything. There are some things I want to pack myself.” She says.
They go back to Lucy’s house the next day to finish packing. They’ll stay at Tim’s tonight since the flight leaves early.
“Thanks for helping pack Tam.” She gives the girl a hug.
“Have fun Lucy. I’ll be fine!” She can see the worry.
They say goodbye and head back to Tim’s. Early the next morning, they make their way to the airport. Once they make it through security, they grab breakfast before finding their gate.
When they arrive in Hawaii, Lucy is captivated. It’s beautiful and she had the best company. Tim grabs their luggage from baggage claim and they go get their rental car. Tim puts the bags in the car and helps Lucy into the front seat. She’s tried to do it herself, but he wants to be a gentleman.
They drive to the hotel, their hands staying clasped together. Once Tim checks in, they head to the room.
“Oh Tim. Look at this view.” Lucy says in awe.
“It’s the most beautiful sight I’ve seen.” He says quietly and she looks to see him staring at her.
“Thank you for asking me to come.” She kisses him.
“I was an idiot to ever hide my feelings from you Lucy.”
“We’re here now and happier than ever right? We both had our moments, but it’s put us together now.” She leans into him and yawns. “Let’s grab lunch?”
“Sounds perfect.” Tim says as they head to a restaurant. The next few days are spent hiking, at the beach, eating, and enjoying each others company. Lucy even convinces Tim to do surf lessons. It’s been a wonderful trip for both of them. They really enjoy getting to know each other more in every single way. The trips ends far too soon for both of them.
One year later…
The past year has been amazing for both Tim and Lucy. It didn’t take long for them to move in together. They know going into this relationship, they wanted everything with each other. This was the most important relationship they’ve been in.
A few days ago they arrived back in Hawaii. They wanted to commiserate their one year anniversary.
Tim planned a romantic dinner at a hidden restaurant they loved the last time they were there. The next day, they went on a hike with the most amazing views. They enjoyed it last time and loved it again this time around. Lucy was staring out and talking to Tim. He wasn’t answering so she turned around and gasped.
She sees Tim on one knee and puts her hands over her mouth. “Lucy, one year ago I thought I may have lost you. Instead, I’ve gained you in every single amazing way. My life is better with you. Will you marry me?”
Lucy can’t stop the tears, but manages to spit out “YES!”
He puts the ring on her finger and kisses her. He spins her around.
They’ve been on so many adventures, but this was their favorite one of all.
