Heckyl gasped, clutching the left side of his stomach. Fuck, Badussa had gotten him good before the Power Rangers finished him off. All because he didn’t want to be indebted to the Rangers anymore, so he decided the best option was to sacrifice himself to save them. Wow. That was very unlike him. He should have left after warning Shelby about the incoming danger, but he couldn’t find it in him to leave like that.
He shucked his overcoat and vest off, looking to the spot where he was bleeding out. He frowned at the stained dress shirt. Damn, it was one of his favourites too. But he could think about buying new clothes when he was not actively dying from blood loss. If he could, he would heal it with his magic, but he had already exhausted it from destroying Badussa’s amulet, and fighting him off.
Gritting his teeth, he tore his overcoat, using the pieces of fabric to apply pressure to the side of his stomach. He groaned at the pain, but he had to stop the bleeding before he died from blood loss. He knew he only had a small window of time to get back to his place in the forest and stitch the wound closed.
Of course, that was the exact moment the Rangers found him.
“Oh shit, Heckyl, don’t die on us, yeah?” Chase cursed, and Heckyl flipped him off.
“I don’t need you to help me, I can handle things myself. I’m fine. ” He turned to glare at Chase properly, but immediately came to regret it as it only disturbed the wound. He hissed as more blood seeped out of the wound.
“We don’t trust you, but you saved our lives, so it’s only fair that we save yours.” Said Tyler in his ever so heroic voice. Heckyl didn’t know whether he wanted to punch him, or to thank him. Instead, he narrowed his eyes at him for a few seconds before letting up. Sure he had a first aid kit back where he was stationed, but it was going to be a pain stitching everything up by himself. And if he had to be indebted to the Rangers again , well, he’d think of something to get out of it.
“Fine,” He huffed. “Take me back to your base. You’re lucky Snide and I aren’t fused together anymore. He would have killed you on the spot.”
He was feeling a little light headed from the whole ordeal, both from the injury and with dealing with the Rangers. They always seemed to give him a headache whether they were friend or foe. It was actually kind of impressive.
Heckyl let himself be pulled up with the help of Chase and Riley into the back of Tyler's car.
“There, let’s get you patched up and back to where you were before. Thank you for saving us again. I mean it. Even if you stole our Energems and tried to kill us a few times, you saved us too.” Riley gently patted him on the back. “I always seem to end up monitoring you when you get hurt, huh?” He laughed.
Heckyl flushed embarrassed and rolled his eyes. “This is only the second time, and last time wouldn’t have happened if the Energem hadn’t tried to bond to me.”
“Yeah, well, I’m still looking after you, so that’s that. And for the record, try not to bleed on Tyler’s car. I think he’ll end you before anyone else can.”
“I do have a lot of enemies.” He sighed. “Make sure I don’t die.”
They reached the Ranger’s base under the museum in record time, and Heckyl was hurriedly rushed onto a stretcher. “This is the first and last time I’ll say this. Thank you, Rangers. I can’t go to a normal hospital as they’ll probably lock me up for being an alien or a monster. And I did terrorize Amber Beach for quite some time.”
“As long as you’re not doing it anymore, you’re fine in our books.” Shelby smiled.
“After Snide betrayed me to work with Arcanon, I don't have an ounce of bad blood in my body.” He said bitterly. Snide wouldn’t have swapped sides just suddenly, there must have been a reason, but that didn’t stop him from feeling betrayed. One day they’d talk and clear it all up. “I think I’ve bled the last bit of that out. If everyone’s done staring at me, I’d like to stop bleeding now.” He carefully removed the piece of his overcoat from his torso. That only caused the staring to increase.
“Damn.” Chase whistled. Heckyl flipped him off again. Right, he forgot humans don’t normally bleed bright blue blood. “Don’t know how I never thought you were human. The blue really gives that away.”
“I’m not stupid enough to fight in fights I know I’ll lose.”
“Except… this one!” Koda so helpfully added.
“Well, Heckyl. Before I stitch you up, is there anything else you want to tell us about your body that’s different to ours?” Kendall crossed her arms.
“Apart from blue blood and two hearts? Nothing, I don’t think.” He shrugged, or at least tried to while lying down.
Riley lit up. “So THAT’S why the heart rate monitor was so off last time.”
“Now we’ve gone over that, will you stitch me up, or do I have to do that myself?”
“Alright, everybody out!” Kendall exclaimed and shooed everyone else out. Heckyl finally let himself relax.
Some stitches and bandages later, he was a little exhausted being surrounded by the Rangers, but he put up with it in the name of healing. Once his magic was back to its full potential, he was ditching the base and never coming back lest he get caught up in whatever war that was about to happen.
“So… Are you two together now?” He glanced at Chase and Ivan who were bickering loudly in front of him. Again. Could an injured man have any quiet time here? He was supposed to be continuously monitored so he didn’t spontaneously combust or bleed to death (or steal the Energems) but this was too much.
Chase flipped him off in order to continue their argument, but Ivan had stopped and looked at him with wide eyes.
“How did you know?” He gasped.
“Not much to guess there,” He tilted his head up haughtily. “I’ve won a bet against Snide. Too bad he isn’t here to pay up.”
“You had a bet with Snide over us ?” Ivan demanded.
Heckyl scoffed. “He’s not as bad as you make him out to be.” He got an eye roll from Chase at that. “And besides, anyone could tell based on the tension that would appear whenever you were alone together. Or with Riley.” He looked to the Green Ranger who had abandoned the book he was reading in order to focus on the conversation at hand.
“Yes, we are together. Chase and Riley and I.” Ivan smiled fondly.
“Okay you sap.” Chase punched him lightly in the shoulder. “Well, you’ve successfully ruined the argument. Why’d you wanna know?” He raised an eyebrow towards Heckyl.
“My bet with Snide, that was mostly it. Also, you kinda remind me Sledge and Poisandra the way you act like you hate each other but secretly like each other.” He had never seen two beings as horrified as the two standing before him. “Kidding, of course,” he wasn’t. “I was betting on you getting together since I first saw the base.”
“Hey if you’re fine enough to talk, then you should be fine to get out of here.” Chase huffed. “You know, just in case you decide you want the Energems again.”
“Oh don’t be such a spoil sport, Ranger. I’m above all that now. Who needs the Energems when I have my magic?” He smiled.
“Fuck you too, then.”
“Chase!” Riley shot him a look, and he immediately backed down. “Like Tyler said before, we don’t trust you, but we owe you one after saving us countless times.”
“You Rangers have a habit of getting into trouble.” Heckyl shook his head. “Besides, not like I’m going to be going anywhere when this planet ends up like Sentai 6.”
“You mentioned something about getting off of the planet soon to Shelby before. What is it?” Riley looked at him suspiciously.
Heckyl poured over his thoughts for a bit. “Hmm… Well I suppose I can indulge in… some details now that my other half isn’t here anymore. Sledge has something massive up his sleeves. I can’t disclose any more than that in case someone comes after me.”
The Rangers exchanged a silent conversation, then Chase nodded and kissed his lovers on the cheek (Heckyl rolled his eyes which earned him another middle finger) before he dashed out of the base to go find the other Rangers.
“Thank you for enlightening us of what’s to come.” Ivan nodded.
“Of course! Anything for my favourite Rangers.” He settled into a lazy grin. Snide would have totally glared at him if he was here for that…. Maybe he missed him a little more than he wanted to admit. After all, they spent millions of years together. It was only natural. He really needed to find a way to talk to him.
“Hello? Earth to Heckyl?” Riley waved a hand over his face. “You in there?”
Heckyl shook the thoughts from his head. “Right, sorry. Got a little lost up in there,” he tapped the top of his head. “What is it?”
“Well, I just got off the phone with Tyler,” and wow, when did that happen? “And the place where your camp was is gone. Something came and destroyed it. The only thing they could find was a journal.”
Oh fuck. Well, there goes his plans of going back to the forest. At least his journal was fine. “That journal is important. I need it.”
Riley tilted his head and narrowed his eyes at him. “Are you sure you’re okay? I know you’ve come to a base with your ex-enemies, but dude, you are so on edge.”
“Yes, I’m sure I’m fine. Snide isn’t with me anymore and all that.”
“You seem to miss him quite a bit,” said the knight.
Heckyl turned around so he wasn’t facing any of the other Rangers. “Don’t worry about me. I’m fine . Snide made it clear he didn’t care about us anymore.”
There was a tense silence in the air before Riley spoke up again. “If you ever need to talk, we’re here. And if you need a place to stay… Well… You can stay here if you promise not to steal anything again.”
“We’ll see.” He hummed and closed his eyes. He’d end up leaving soon anyways. (He never did in the end.)
