Slipped Away

Summary:

A short story I wrote thinking “what if they didn’t save Jeffrey in time.”

Work Text:

Diego slid to his knees next to the bleeding body of Jeffrey. Insane how they'd met only hours prior and yet he was so desperate to save this man's life, and so it seemed the same for the others as they nervously gathered around. Benito, despite his bold claims of being doctor, seemed frozen on the spot, not making a move to help save his life. Fine, Diego would do it then. He flinched at the way Jeffrey yelped and sobbed in pain as Diego and Luis worked together to press down on the bites, praying they'd be able to stop the bleeding just enough to keep him from bleeding out. Diego slowly registered that Luis and Benito were now talking to Jeffrey, desperately trying to encourage him to keep fighting, to stay alive.

"Come on, you gotta make more deliveries Pizza Boy!" Benito's voice was desperate, in disbelief. Diego could see the way he was trying to work out how in the world this was happening. He too couldn't understand. They'd come here to make some money and go home, not to be thrown into some monster hell pit. Jeffrey coughed, red spilling down his chin, "no..... no, I can't..... I.... I'm not supposed to die.... This isn't fair." Diego shook his head so hard he saw stars for a moment, "you're not gonna die Jeffrey, you just gotta hold on!"

Lucie came sliding in with a tangled mess of bandages, "h-here!" She shoved them towards Benito, who seemed far too nervous taking them. Diego pulled his hands away from the mess of bite wounds he had been attempting to stanch, cursing as blood just kept spilling. He slammed his hands back down on the wounds, expecting Jeffery to scream at the force. Yet, he didn't. Everyone noticed this, and slowly they looked into Jeffrey's glassy eyes. It was clear as day, there was no life left in him, there hadn't been for a few minutes. In their rush, they hadn't even seen him slip away. Diego looked back down at his hands as he pulled them away from Jeffrey's cold body, realizing they were drenched in his blood.
