Work Text:
Sirius was curled up on their bed, clutching his teddy bear tight, dressed up in his red pajamas. He was nestled in the blankets, the heat slowly easing him into sleep as he fought to stay awake. The door cracked open slightly, and Remus crept in. His gentle footsteps eased Sirius’ little mind, as he reached his hands out to Remus.
“Shh…I know honey, you had to wait for dada today, since he had to work…but I’m here now, shh..” Sirius teared up, wrapping his arms around Remus’ neck. His tears started to flow, and he wasn’t even sure why. Remus felt the tears as his baby cried into his shoulder, sniffling as he cuddled his teddy bear.
“Oh, my darling..I’m sorry..I know daddy promised you to read to you…but it’s so late, my darling..It would be best if you went to bed, sweetheart. Little boy’s need their rest..” Sirius felt like bursting into tears, and his face crinkled up and his eyes leaked more tears. Daddy had promised to read his storybook to him, and now he’s saying that he can’t? But Sirius wanted to be good for daddy, he didn’t need to deal with a fussy boy late at night…Sirius whispered against Remus’ shoulder, slightly muffled,
“O..okay daddy…” Remus smiled weakly, and he felt extremely guilty as Sirius clung to him, tear tracks streaked across his face. But he needed to finish what he was doing, and he would take proper care of his baby tomorrow. Remus gently lifted Sirius off his lap, tucking him back under the soft cotton quilts. He took Sirius’ teddy, tucking it safely under Sirius’ arm. Sirius looked at him sadly, his big eyes radiant with the sheen of tears. Remus bit his lip, kissing the tip of his nose, and then Sirius’ head. Remus murmured softly, standing up and turning off the light.
“I love you, my darling…daddy is right here, okay? I’m just downstairs, and I’ll be up in a few hours..You don’t need to be scared or anything, little one….Night night..” Sirius watched as Remus shut the door, and the room was bathed in darkness. Sirius bit his lip, feeling his eyes water as he looked around in the dark. He pulled up the covers tight, squeezing his eyes shut as he tried not to think about what could be hiding in the dark. Sirius had fallen into an uneasy sleep, and he constantly kept waking up, tearing up when he realized he was still alone in the dark bedroom.
Around 2 in the morning, Sirius sat up, wiping away the tears and slowly walking to the bedroom door. He quietly clicked it open, creeping to the stairwell. He crawled onto the big platform step before the descending steps, and he saw Remus at the dining table. He was slumped over, with his reading glasses on, paper and ink scattered everywhere. Sirius wanted to run downstairs and jump into his arms, but he was nervous.
Would his daddy be mad at him for being up so late? Would he punish his baby for interrupting his work..? But Sirius looked back into the bedroom, into the dark, and he decided to take his chances. He slowly slinked down the stairs, taking care to avoid the creaking floorboards. Remus seemed to be asleep at the table, with his head buried in his shoulders. Sirius gingerly walked to him, hesitantly tapping his shoulder.
“Daddy?…Are…are you awake..?” Sirius whispered quietly, watching as Remus stirred.
“Baby..?” Remus mumbled, before his eyes widened as he took in Sirius’ state, before looking over to the grandfather clock. It was 2:15 in the morning. Remus worriedly looked back up at Sirius, cupping his cheek.
“Little one, why are you awake? It’s far too late, you should be asleep my darling baby..” Sirius started to cry, and he pried Remus’ arms open, crawling into his lap. Sirius whispered softly through his cries, clutching onto Remus.
“I’m sorry daddy, I just couldn’t sleep..I keep waking up, I’m so scared of the dark…I-I need you..” Remus’ face contorted with immense guilt, and he squeezed baby closer, stroking his hair.
“My god, poor baby…I’m so sorry honey, daddy should have known better..especially when daddy knows you're scared of the dark..” Remus trailed off, wincing with pity as he hugged Sirius. Sirius gave an incoherent, muffled reply into Remus’ neck, as he started to drift off in his arms. Remus sighed, carefully supporting Sirius before standing up, taking off his glasses and going upstairs.
Remus walked into their bedroom, tucking Sirius in again. But this time, he stayed, shedding his outer clothes as he joined Sirius. He held his little one close, whispering into his neck gently.
“Daddy’s right here, baby…nothing’s gonna hurt you..now sleep. Baby’s tired..” Sirius nodded a little, closing his eyes, yawning as he drifted off into a peaceful sleep.
