Chapter 1: New faces and old routines
Chapter Text
Sam sat annoyed in his chair as he listened to the teacher introducing herself for the 3rd time, he wasn’t sure why she kept doing it as she had been a teacher for this class for the past 3 years and everyone knew her already.
However, that train of thought was proven to be wrong as he heard a stranger's name being called to introduce himself to the class.
Sam never really paid attention to his classmates and what they looked like however he did feel a little embarrassed that he never noticed that the guy he was sitting next to was new to the class as when the stranger’s name was called he was the one who stood up and walked towards the front of the class.
He had brown hair and eyes, and he was wearing a green jumper. Sam looked at the male slightly interested as he spoke up, clearly uncomfortable with the situation as the male fiddled around with the sleeve of his jumper, his voice being barely audible due to the male speaking in a quiet tone.
“Uhm.. Well my name is Glen and I recently moved to the neighbourhood, I like being outside and playing video games..” The teacher saw that as a passible introduction as she just told him to get back to his seat and told the rest of the class that if they have any questions to just ask Glen during lunch break or in in-between periods
Sam kept an eye on the male next to him, not sure what was about the seemingly shy male that was drawing Sam to him and Sam couldn’t wait till he found that mystery out.
The rest of the class was just white noise with small observations about what Glen was doing, to Sam it was like trying to figure out a puzzle, and he would be dammed if he did not solve it.
Once the bell rang to signify the end of class, Sam wasted no time to grab his bag and to get out of class but he stayed behind once he noticed that Glen wasn’t trying to move through the rest of the class to get out.
Sam rolled his eyes slightly but decided to do his nice act of the day and walked up to Glen, poking him in the shoulder to get his attention.
Glen looked at him slightly confused, “Do you need something?” he asked Sam.
“Do you need help getting to the next class? I wouldn’t mind showing you the way” Sam offered him, because well he did not need anything, but he doubted that Glen knew his way around the school.
He got a small smirk on his face once he noticed that Glen looked relieved at the offer and the male in front of him nodded, “I’d appreciate that mate, if it's not too much trouble for you.” Nervousness seeped through Glens voice as he answered, but Sam did not let that deter him, he just nodded at him.
“Follow me then, I’m Sam by the way, It's nice to meet you” Sam said in response, motioning for Glen to follow him as he guided the male to their next class which was a floor higher than the classroom they just came out of.
Sam made some small talk with Glen to figure out the male more, and he got the pleasure of knowing that the male was the one who moved in the old house across the street from him, the house had been on sale for as long as Sam could remember and Glens family decided to move there for a fresh start or whatever.
Sam and Glen arrived on time for their next class and both sat down according to the seating plan, which was to say that they were sitting next to each other again.
And that is how most of the school day went, whenever the bell rang Sam would show Glen where the next class is located, however that rhythm came to a halt when Lunch came around, Glen just walked off after Sam told him that he was going to sit with his friends. He was planning on offering Glen if he wanted to tag along, but the male had already told him that he was planning on just doing his own thing before he could.
So Sam approached the Cafeteria together with Dale after he had noticed the male walking down the halls, they were mostly exchanging small talk and what was new in their classes when they arrived at the table where more of their friends were sitting.
Kaif, Stan and Josh were sitting more to the left while Gary, Sam, Daz and Dale sat more to the right. Usually Ebbz was there as well along with Clari and Brad, but those three were nowhere to be seen which would mean that their timetables were not lining up lunch wise.
“So back in this shithole huh guys? Anything actually noteworthy happening or are we just in for the same old bullshit?” Josh asked the group, most of them did not have anything to say, so Sam decided to speak up.
“There's a new kid in my class, just moved in during summer break in the old house across my street”
“No fucking way, you're telling me some family was crazy enough to buy the death trap of a house?” Kaif asked Sam with a small laugh, not believing Sam that someone would actually move in the house that had been on sale since they were toddlers.
“Yep, the guy sits next to me during class, so I just asked him. He probs spend the rest of summer vacation inside cuz I did not notice him” Sam replied with a small nod before getting his lunch out of his bag and taking a bite.
“Wait so what is the newbie like then? It’s not really that often someone decides to transfer to our school?” Dale piped up, wanting to know more.
“You know how Stan was in the beginning? Not talking much and looking like he wants to be anywhere but here? Basically just that but with an even quieter voice”
“So he’s me with more social anxiety?” Stan remarked with a small laugh, kind of surprised that it was even possible for someone to be worse than him in social situations.
“Exactly!” Sam nodded at Stan and silence overcame the table, not really having something else to talk about other than sharing some things that happened over the summer.
Once the warning bell rang everyone quickly packed their bags and made their way to their next class, where Sam sat next to Glen. Sam wasn’t sure why he was feeling relief that Glen managed to navigate his way to the classroom, but he decided not to comment on it, not wanting to make things awkward or to make Glen feel like he was assuming things about him just because he is the new guy.
The rest of the school day went by slowly, as the teachers were all just introducing themselves yet again and nothing of value was actually being thought which was to be expected of the first school day, but that did not mean it wasn’t boring as hell.
Once school actually ended Sam just sighed with relief, leaning back slightly as he waited till most of the class was out before walking out himself not feeling like pushing other people away just to get home slight quicker.
On his way home Sam saw Glen walk towards his house and watched as the male entered the building. He noticed how the building looked less abandoned than it did before the summer, it actually looked like people were living in it now.
Sam rolled his eyes slightly to stop his thoughts from trailing, and he entered his own home, wondering what the school year would look like now that there was someone new in the class. It did not help that the male had a small charm about him too. Sam was going to make it his mission to find out what made the male catch his eyes, and maybe he might befriend him in the end, after all that is what happened with most of the people in his friend group.
No one that he did not like stayed in the friend group, Sam made sure that only people who he cares about are in the circle, and he prides himself on that.
Still Sam went to sleep after eating dinner wondering what tomorrow would look like.
Chapter 2: A fresh start
Chapter Text
Moving to a different place will always change your life, whether that is a positive one or a negative one depends on the circumstances
That was the reality for Glen, who had lived in his hometown for 17 years before his parents decided to move to a different town in Wales.
So for Glen that meant that he would have to say goodbye to his childhood friends and life as he knew it because it would never be the same again after the move. He wasn’t happy about it, especially because he wasn’t really given a reason as to why they had to move in the first place.
They moved during the summer vacation so that Glen could start school at the same time as everyone else which he was thankful for because he would otherwise have to deal with joining midway through the school year which would cause more attention.
His first day of school was spent feeling nervous and unsure, disliking the fact that he had to stand in front of the classroom to introduce himself however there was a positive thing that happened as well.
He had met someone who was willing to show him around the school which he was thankful for, the person who did that was named Sam, and he had left a good impression on Glen as the male helped Glen feel less nervous as he walked through the school with the male.
Currently, Glen was in his room, getting his stuff ready so that he could go to school. He hoped that today would be different from yesterday as he had to listen to teachers mainly introduce themselves and give an hour-long speech on what they would cover this year, it went in one ear and out the other.
Glen sighed as he slung his bag over his shoulder and walked down the stairs, he had already eaten breakfast, so he only needed to put on his shoes and coat before he was ready to head out, after he had grabbed his house keys of course.
Glen looked around the neighbourhood, still trying to familiarize himself with it. He had spent most of the weeks in the house itself, having to clean up the mess with his parents that came with buying an abandoned building.
He walked past houses on the way towards school and as he neared a crossroad he heard his name being called from behind him which caused him to turn around.
“Yo Glen!”
It turned out that the person who called out his name was Sam, the male had brown hair and brown eyes and his hair was a mess, not that Glens was any better.
“Oh hey Sam” Glen replied, a small smile creeping up on his face as the male approached him.
“You ready to spend another day in hell?” Sam asked him with a small smirk on his face, obviously making a joke about the fact that they had to go to school.
The two males started to walk again towards the school while continuing to talk to each other.
“It’s not like we really have a choice now do we?” Glen said in response to Sam's question to which Sam just chuckled at how defeated Glen sounded which caused Glen to also crack a bigger smile.
The two males arrived at the school and Sam led Glen to the lockers because Sam needed to do something there, Glen did not have a clue what he needed to do because Sam only mentioned needing to go to the lockers for something.
Glen stood awkwardly as he watched a male with a red beanie approach Sam with a smile and started to have a conversation with him, Glen assumed it was one of Sam's friends and was proven correct as the two males gave each other a quick hug.
Glen went to grab his phone as a means to pass the time, but before he could check his messages Sam already called his name and waved him over, probably to introduce him to his friend. Glen braced himself as he walked over, he was never one for social interactions.
“Glen, this is Kaif. Kaif this is Glen” Sam introduced the males to each other, pointing his hand at the person whose name he said with a small smile on his face.
Glen gave a small nod and a quiet “Sup” as a means to greet Kaif and Kaif nodded back at him with a small smile on his face.
“Nice to meet you Glen”
“It’s nice to meet you too Kaif” Glen said with a pause in between, not because he did not mean it but more so because he needed to think about the response to what Kaif said.
Kaif was about to speak up again when the warning bell rang, signalling that there were only five minutes left before classes started, so instead Kaif gave a goodbye to Sam and Glen before he walked off making his way towards his classroom or at least that is what Glen assumed Kaif was walking off to.
Sam just looked at Glen before nodding his head in a direction, basically motioning for Glen to follow him and Glen did. They walked together towards class and Sam showed him a small shortcut to get through the school quicker.
They arrived just in time as when they just sat down the bell went off, signalling the start of class.
The rest of the day went by fast for Glen, as nothing notable had happened during class. The only thing that was significant was when Sam asked him if he wanted to eat lunch together with him and his friend, but Glen declined, saying that he wanted to explore the school a bit so that he wouldn’t get lost if he is by himself. Sam looked slightly disappointed when Glen said no but quickly covered it up, saying that if Glen ever feels like it to just join him at the table.
Another factor for Glen to say no to Sam's offer was also because he disliked large crowds and sitting at a table with a group of strangers was not something that was on Glens list of things he likes to do. It would mean being introduced, having to answer questions about himself that he quite frankly did not feel like answering just yet.
After lunch ended and the rest of the classes flew by Glen sighed with relief as the last bell rang. It meant that the school day was finally over and Glen wouldn’t have to listen to some half-baked instructions that went in one ear and out the other.
Glen grabbed his bag and was about to head out the classroom when he decided to turn around to see what Sam was doing, he was kind of slamming his stuff back into his bag and had a semi annoyed expression on his face but when Sam slung the bag over his shoulder and was walking towards him, his face got a friendlier expression on it.
Glen was messing around with his sleeve as he spoke up to ask Sam a question, “Do you want to walk home together? Since we live in the same direction?”
Sam nodded at him, “Sure! Like you said we have to go the same direction anyway, so we will be saying bye to each other and then have to walk in silence if one of us says no” He replied with a chuckle in the end and Glen cracked a smile as well, having a small imagine in his head about how awkward that would be.
“That silence would not be pleasurable to walk in” Glen remarked as the two of them walked out of the classroom and towards the exit of the school, they had to go down a staircase to get to the main floor.
“Do you need anything from your locker or do you have everything?” Glen asked Sam who shook his head. “Nope, only had a book in there that I needed for today and tomorrow and I don’t have anything to put in it. What about you?”
“I haven’t even used my locker, I know where it is, but there is not really a point for it yet.” Glen said with a slight shrug, and because neither boy had to go to their locker they walked straight to the exit of the school to go home.
As they walked home Sam told him some stories from the neighbourhood, mostly just the ghost stories that had to do with the house that Glen was now living in. Glen listened to him as he talked, he found it interesting to know a bit more about the house that he was going to be staying in for a while.
After walking for a fair bit they stood in front of Glens home, Sam had said that it would be handier for Glen to go home first because Sam’s house was just across the street, so it didn’t really matter all that much other than the fact that they would have to cross the road for Sam’s house while if they followed it they would get to Glen’s.
“We are walking together tomorrow as well?” Sam asked Glen, to which Glen nodded. “If you don’t mind that is.”
Sam nodded at that, “See you tomorrow then, I’ll come pick you up, just make sure you are ready around seven thirty.”
Glen nodded and waved Sam goodbye as the male started to walk towards his own house. Glen sighed as he opened the door with his keys and got greeted by the house being empty, he already thought that he was going to be home alone, yet it didn’t really help the disappointment that always came to coming home to an empty house. He just hoped that one day it would be different, but he would just have to wait and see if that would even happen in the first place.
Glen hoped that tomorrow would at least be slightly better, even though he would have PE that day.
