Work Text:
Kim had been acting off since she came back from talking to Hailey, and Jay was starting to get worried. He waited until they were home before he decided to say something about it. Jay made sure that Zoey was okay and then made his way upstairs.
Kim was sitting on their bed, staring blankly at the wall when he got up there.
"Babe?" Jay spoke softly, not wanting to startle her.
"Hm?" She hummed softly, not looking away from the wall.
"What's wrong? You've been shaken since you came back from talking to Hailey." Jay slowly sat down next to her on the bed, and she finally looked at him.
"Hailey told me something and it reminded me of the conversation that we had before I got pregnant," Kim said, purposefully being vague. She was trying to get Jay's honest reaction and she didn't want him to react simply by the bombshell that Hailey had dropped on Kim not even an hour earlier. She rolled her eyes when she saw a smirk slowly form on Jay's face. Of course.
"What'd Hails tell you?" Jay asked, ignoring her eye roll. He was used to it, he said a lot of things that resulted in Kim rolling her eyes.
"She told me she's in love with me," Kim said, she shifted uncomfortably.
"And? What did you say?" Jay prompted her to continue.
"I might have apologized before panicking and running out of the bathroom?" It came out as more of a question and Jay stared at her for a solid thirty seconds before he finally just laughed. Which resulted in Kim rolling her eyes yet again.
"Oh my God, Kim! She probably thinks you hate her." Jay said and Kim groaned.
"I know, I know. I feel awful. I just wasn't expecting it!" Kim explained herself, even though she didn't need to explain herself to Jay.
"You need to call her, like immediately," Jay said before getting up and grabbing Kim's phone from where she had sat it on the nightstand. Kim took it from him with a quiet huff.
"What do I even say?" She asked, looking up at him.
"Tell her to come over so that you can talk," Jay said and Kim nodded while she looked back down at her phone. He watched as she put her phone up to her ear, chewing on her bottom lip nervously.
Jay started to think that Hailey wasn't going to answer until Kim started talking. "Hails! I am so sorry that I ran out like that. I panicked. Come over, please?"
Jay couldn't hear how Hailey responded, but by the relieved look on Kim's face, he knew that it was good.
"She's on her way," Kim said, her voice just above a whisper. Jay sat down next to her and hugged her tightly. She happily welcomed his warm embrace.
~••~
Hailey stared down at the phone in her hand with wide eyes. She couldn't think of a single good reason for Kim to ask her to come over. She also couldn't figure out why she had agreed to go. " Because it's Kim." The little voice in the back of her head whispered to her.
Breathe, she reminded herself and took a deep breath. Hailey went to her closet to change out of her jeans and into leggings. She kept the sweater she was wearing on and then moved to her bathroom to finally wash her makeup off. Hailey looked at her watch when it dinged, biting her lip when she saw it was a text from Kim. She relaxed a little when she saw it was just Kim sending her address.
Hailey forced herself to take another deep breath. She could feel her anxiety rising, she reminded herself that she didn't even know what Kim had to say yet. She had no reason to be so nervous, not yet anyway. Hailey took one more look at herself in the mirror before grabbing her keys and heading out of her apartment.
The drive to Kim and Jay's was agonizingly slow. When she got there, Hailey sat in her car for a good ten minutes before she finally forced herself to get out of her car. She paused when she reached the front door before slowly reaching up and knocking. Hailey could hear quiet shuffling inside before the door was finally opened a few minutes later. It opened to reveal Jay, who was smiling at her. Weird.
"Hey, Hails! Kim's waiting for you upstairs, it's the last door on the right." Jay said, stepping aside to let Hailey in.
Hailey walked into the house and took a quick look around. The main entrance was incredibly homey, there was a shoe rack right by the door. Along with a coat rack and on top of the shoe rack was a bowl where they kept their keys. To her left there was a staircase that led upstairs and to her right, there was a hallway that led to the rest of the house. Hailey carefully slipped her boots off before putting them on the rack. She turned to look back at Jay, but he had already slipped away. How convenient.
Hailey took the stairs one at a time and went as slowly as she could. Eventually, much to her dismay, she made it to the top and then she made it to the end of the hallway. She reached a shaky hand up and knocked on the door. It was quiet for a moment before the door opened and Hailey was standing face to face with Kim, who was wearing nothing but pajama shorts and a tank top. Hailey had to remind herself to breathe, again .
"Hey Hails, come in," Kim said, and when Hailey stepped into the room she took note of Kim not only shutting but locking the door behind them. Once she had locked the door, Kim turned back around and took a step toward Hailey, causing Hailey to step backward. Before Hailey could process what was happening, her back hit the wall.
Hailey looked up at Kim and her eyes widened slightly when she saw the look on the brunette's face. Kim's usually honey-colored eyes were now dark, and it intimidated Hailey, more than she wanted to admit. Hailey tried to ignore the feeling of Kim's warm hand as she held her against the wall, Kim's nails were digging into her skin a bit.
"What- What are you doing?" Hailey asked shakily around the lump forming in her throat. She went quiet when Kim's other hand reached up and took ahold of her jaw. Kim gripped Hailey's face firmly.
"I thought about your little confession and I made a decision," Kim smiled a sickeningly sweet smile. "You Hailey Anne Upton, are mine now."
"I- What? What about Jay?" Hailey whispered, she was utterly confused, excited for whatever this meant, but also confused.
"I'm still with Jay, that's not going to change. It just means that I'm going to be with you too." Kim stated as if this was the easiest thing she'd ever decided, and maybe it was. Hailey couldn't tell otherwise.
"What's the catch?" Hailey asked, this was just too good to be true, there had to be some kind of a stipulation.
"No catch, there's a few... rules, however." Kim let go of Hailey's jaw.
"Rules?" Hailey asked, what were the rules for dating your best friend who is also married to your other best friend? Kim hummed softly and took Hailey's hand in her own, leading her over to the bed.
"More so.. expectations. This may seem like you're with both Jay and me, but you're only dating me. I know this is probably a lot to take in at once. I also need you to know that I'm doing this because I love you, but I also love Joy, and I want to be with both of you." Kim said and Hailey looked into her eyes, searching for any kind of sign that Kim was lying to her, when all Hailey found was love and a look of absolute honesty, she smiled.
"Whatever you want," Hailey said, Kim tilted her head slightly, trying to decipher if Hailey was just saying that to say it.
Hailey meant it, with everything that she had. She knew that there was still so much more to discuss, but right now none of it mattered. What mattered was that this was happening and nothing would change that fact.
