big words and small gestures — CCCC/HMS

Summary:

alternate title: fic inspired by a headcanon from the cjfs, in which Mind does small things for Heart and absolutely Does Not Like people knowing he is capable of being nice!

could be romantic if you squint hard enough but really it's up to interpretation... Written as platonic but it's whatever you want it to be

Notes:

uhhh yeah this was fun to write JFBNSJDBS... thought of rhe concept of the names Hen/Mucka/Blucka being used insultingly or smth and tbh it was entertaining enough to make it, so!! anyways #letheartbesociallyawareandmindbeafuckingdolt club forever

Work Text:

"Hey, Soul?"

"Yeah, Heart, what's up?"

Heart shifted to better face the direction that he heard Soul's voice come from. He thought for a second about how to phrase his question.

"This is gonna sound so dumb," he sighed, continuing, "but, have I really been stocking up on that much candy and stuff lately?"

Soul looked blankly at him, the awkward silence conveying the same vibe that his expression would've if Heart could see it.

"...No? I haven't noticed it if you have." He paused, thinking. "Wouldn't you have noticed it, with you being the one getting it?"

Heart went from sitting straight on the couch to leaning back. "I thought I would've! But I've been finding so much with my stuff lately."

He stretched his wings into a more comfortable position before stretching his arms and finally settling down. "I mean, it's nice— It makes me really happy, like that... Oh, what's that word Mind used the other day?"

Soul shifted, turning to face Heart better, though the other couldn't see it. "One of his big ones? Those fancy ones nobody uses except to extend an essay?"

Heart chuckled, his wings fluttering as he laughed. "Yeah, one of those. Something about accidentally being happy? I don't know..." He paused, tilting his head in thought. "I think it starts with an S? Se... Sered.. Ugh."

As if on cue, Mind walked into the room. This action was not unnoticed by Heart, who'd become almost scarily good at hearing footsteps before they even entered a doorway.

"Mind, what was that word you were talking about the other day? When you were insulting someone, I think..." Heart could've been sarcastic when saying this, but the fact that he genuinely used that as a point of reference made it comedically vague to the other two.

Soul snickered. "He does insult people a lot, you know. Might wanna be more specific," he suggested.

Mind simply rolled his eyes, making a 'tch' noise. "Maybe I wouldn't have to insult you to such an extent if you didnt possess such an abundance of insult-able qualities."

Soul groaned. "Just call me stupid, for fuck's sake—"

Heart suddenly jerked forward, evidently having recalled the word.

"Serentipidous! That's it, that's the word—"

"Do you... do you mean 'serendipitous'?'" Mind asked, raising an eyebrow before remembering that Heart couldn't see the gesture.

"Oh, whatever. You know what I mean." Heart huffed, flopping back against the couch. "What I was saying was that all this candy and stuff I keep finding is confusing me, but it's seren.. serendipitous."

Suddenly, suspiciously suddenly, Mind began to look very awkward, which was only noticed by Soul. The tri-horned man raised a silent eyebrow, to which Mind only glared. This confirmed the suspicion.

"I, for one, don't know what you're talking about. You seem to enjoy it, so—"

Soul sat up, interrupting. "Aha! You noticed he enjoys it, Mind."

Heart tilted his head at the sudden exclamation. Mind only glared harder, if that was possible. "Well, I mean— Obviously! It's hard to ignore high-pitched squeals and scampering around the house when he's happy."

Soul looked at Mind with a smug expression that the robotic man wanted to slap off of his face so, so bad.

"Well, you know, I was wondering why you'd bought all those goody bags..."

Mind froze. The faint static crackling of glitches was audible, though just barely.

"None of your fucking business, Hen."

"Yeah, yeah, whatever, Mucka."

Heart cleared his throat, indicating that he was still there. His wings were held up more than usual, indicating a keen interest in the conversation.

"Are you the one putting all those toys and candies near my stuff?" It was phrased as a question, but everyone knew Mind was backed into a corner at this point.

"I— Well, you..." The 'automaton freak' was now stuttering, the incoherence a stark contrast from normal.

"It's— It's just doing my job. It's best for everyone if the emotional center is pleased, correct?" He looked off, making another 'tch' sound and folding his arms. "It's... It's just logic. Obviously."

Normally, Heart probably would've made fun of him for this. Sometimes, though, there was something about Mind being a bit more vulnerable than normal that made the winged man feel... good.

So, he played along.

"That's fair, I guess. Kind of smart, in your own way," Heart commented. Apparently satisfied by this result, Mind exited the room to do... whatever he does.

"You... you do know it's not just that, right?" Soul asked, looking at Heart.

"I may be an idiot, but I'm not as socially inept as Mind, thank-you-very-much."
