Work Text:

It was a cold Scottish morning, the icy air wafting over the hilltops and in through gaps in windows. Jon and Martin were sitting at the small wooden kitchen table, Jon with coffee, Martin with tea. The mugs of warm liquid warmed their hands as they spoke quietly. Though Jon could see something was up with Martin. He was more anxious than usual and kept jumping whenever Jon brought him out of a deep trail of thought.
"Martin, I've got a question." He narrowed his eyes, becoming more serious but it was dulled by the cold morning breeze.
"Yes?"
"Are you...hiding something from me? You've just been more jumpy than usual and I was wondering."
Martin's eyes widened slightly, realising Jon was onto him. "Well...yeah. It's not anything bad, I promise."
"I wouldn't think for a second it would be. You love me too much" Jon says with a small smirk as he takes a long sip of coffee.
"Hey! You love me too." Martin place one of his hands on the table.
"I never said I didn't" Jon placed his hand on Martin's and smiled. "I'm guessing it's a surprise?"
"Well, I guess you could call it that."
"What is it then?"
"That's part of a surprise, Jon. I'm not meant to tell you what it is, otherwise it's not a surprise."
"Oh c'mon, a hint can't hurt."
"There's not really a way I can hint at it, not one I can think of at least."
Jon just smiled softly at that. Martin downed the rest of his tea and got up, heading to the bedroom and emerged with a hand behind his back.
"I wasn't really sure how to tell you"
Jon got up from his seat, a little confused admittedly, but mostly interested. "Tell me what, love?"
Martin took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. "..Jon"
"Martin"
"I don't know how you'll react to this, but I understand if you don't want to. I just saw it and thought of you.. so I bought it."
Martin took another deep breath and got down on one knee. It took Jon a moment to process what was happening, and he was left speechless. "I love you, so, so much. I know we've had a rough couple of years, but I can't stress how much I've loved you relentlessly. If you asked me to go through it all again to get where we are now, I would do it a thousand times over in a heartbeat." He took out the ring which had a small ace of hearts as the jewel. "I know it's not intended as an engagement ring, but you're ace and I love you so I thought it fit." Jon started to cry a little. " I will love you to death and if the afterlife is real, I will love you for all eternity. Jonathan Sims, will you marry me?"
"Yes, yes, I'd love to." Jon brought Martin up onto both of his feet and kissed him, tears still running down his cheeks and onto Martin's. Martin put the ring into Jon's finger and rest his forehead against his fiance's. "I love you so much" Jon said as he kissed him.
"You taste like coffee"
"And you taste like tea"
