I Bet on Losing Dogs

Summary:

What if Jon couldn't get Martin out of the Lonely?

Work Text:

"I really loved you, you know?"

Those words crushed Jonathan. 'Loved' echoed through his mind. Right, past tense. He was struck with disbelief, the echo of a man who he loved stood in front of him looked back at him with fogged glasses and an expressionless face.

"Obviously he’s done something. Peter’s done something to mess with you–" Martin passed with a cloud and Jon was left alone with a stinging feeling of sharp pain. It pierced through his lungs and for a moment, he couldn't breathe. "Damn it! Martin! Martin!" Jon calls out helplessly. He choked back tears and held his hand to his chest. The world spun around him sickeningly. Without Martin in this place to guide him, Jon was left to the taunting of Peter Lukas.

"I tried to tell you. He’s gone. He made his choice. And it wasn’t you." Jon covers his ears and tries to See Martin. He's met with static and clouds, no sign of Martin. There was no way that he could find him through this fog. "Why don't you leave whilst you still can, Archivist? This isn't your domain, and the eye won't work here. No matter how close me and Elias, or should I say Jonah, are."

Tears flow thick and fast down Jon's cheeks. He knows that Martin is lost and he cannot find him in this place, but without Martin, Jon is lost. Arguing is not reasonable with Peter. He is right and he Knows it. Jon steadies himself and wipes his tears that still flow fast from his eyes. He clears his mind that is scattered with memories of his past treatment of Martin and ideas of what they could've been, in another universe. His mind leads him out through the fog that holds Martin in its grasp.

With a final step, Jon finds his foot to fall on hard stone instead of the sand that had gone on for miles. He knows, without using the abilities that Elias -no- Jonah gave to him, that Martin will be taken by the Lonely and he can do nothing. Jonathan falls to his knees and sobs, because it is all he can think to do. He has lost so much all for the cost of something he didn't want. Tim, Sasha and now Martin. He couldn't even save the man he loves.

Right. Loves. Present tense.
