Chapter Text
The time has come once again for Earthrealm and Outworld to partake in the Mortal Kombat tournament. Earthrealm has won this tournament for centuries to keep Outworld's tyrant ruler Shao Khan from conquering Earthrealm for his own. He was obsessed with conquering the realms, Outworld was his first and Edenia was his second. Fearing he would invade Earthrealm as well, Raiden consulted with the Elder Gods in hopes they could come up with an obstacle for Shao Khan, and in return, the Mortal Kombat tournament was created. Every 100 years the realms pick a handful of champions to partake in the battle. If Earthrealm wins again, Shao Khan, bound by the rules of Mortal Kombat can not take Earthrealm for his own.
The heavens roared with thunder as Raiden sat upon his celestial throne, pondering the crucial decision that lay before him. It was time to select the champions for the centuries-old tournament. This sacred duty weighed heavily on Raiden's divine shoulders, for the fate of the realms hung in the balance. Deep in thought, Raiden decided to descend from the heavens and visit the revered Shaolin monk temple. Known for their discipline, wisdom, and unwavering dedication, the Shaolin monks were exceptional candidates for the tournament. Raiden knew that the chosen fighters would need an unbreakable spirit, for the tournament entailed battles of intense brutality and unmatched ferocity.
On earth were the sacred training gardens of the Shaolin monk temple, where the young and spirited Liu Kang and Kung Lao engaged in their daily training session. Their friendship had blossomed over the years, and their mutual love for martial arts brought them even closer. Together, they sought to master the ancient techniques passed down through generations.
On this particular day, Liu Kang and Kung Lao stood facing each other, their eyes filled with determination. Liu Kang launched a series of powerful kicks and punches, aiming to test his friend's defenses. Kung Lao skillfully blocked each strike, his movements displaying agility and precision.
As the intensity of their sparring increased, Liu Kang felt a surge of energy within him. He knew it was time to unleash his signature move, the Bicycle Kick. With lightning-fast reflexes, he soared into the air, his legs spinning like a whirlwind. Kung Lao, caught off guard by the sudden burst of creativity, struggled to react in time. Liu Kang's devastating kicks hit there mark, and Kung Lao found himself crashing to the ground.
Quickly recovering from the fall, Kung Lao rose to his feet, a smile gracing his face. Despite his temporary defeat, he took it as an opportunity to learn and grow. The friendship between Liu Kang and Kung Lao was a unique bond that fueled their progress, driving them to push past their limits.
"Well done Liu Kang," Kung Lao said. "After all this time you still prove yourself to be the superior one in Kombat."
"Thank you, Kung Lao," Liu Kang replied. " It is an honor to hear that."
"I'm gonna take a break, wanna join?" Kung Lao asked.
"Certainly." Liu Kang answered.
As the two young monks entered the temple, its aura seemed to envelop them, instantly calming their spirits. The scent of incense filled the air, mingling with the soft sounds of distant chanting. The two warriors felt a sense of tranquility wash over them, a much-needed respite from their rigorous training.
Finding refuge in the temple's dining room, Liu Kang and Kung Lao settled down at a small wooden table. The room was adorned with ancient tapestries, depicting mythical creatures and legendary battles. They leaned back, their tired bodies willingly succumbing to the comfort of silence.
A serving monk approached them with a gentle smile, his eyes reflecting years of wisdom. "Good evening Liu Kang and Kung Lao." He happily greeted. He noted their exhaustion and kindly offered them menus, detailing the humble vegetarian fare prepared within the temple's kitchen.
Liu Kang and Kung Lao exchanged a knowing glance, their stomachs yearning for nourishment.
After careful consideration, they decided to share a hearty plate of tofu stir-fry, accompanied by a generous portion of steamed rice. To quench their thirst, they chose fragrant cups of rejuvenating green tea, its warmth bringing a renewed energy to their weary bodies. As they sipped their tea Liu Kang and Kung Lao engaged in light conversation.
"Do you think Lord Raiden will come to the temple to choose a champion?" Kung Lao asked.
"It's possible, the tournament starts soon he's going to need the best of the best." Liu Kang answered. He then looked up the Kung Lao "Are you thinking about offering yourself if he does?"
"I definitely am." Kung Lao said with determination. "I joined the Shaolin to prove myself, Liu Kang, if Lord Raiden offers me the opportunity I'll take it without second thought."
Liu Kang smiled at his childhood friend. "I admire your courage, Kung Lao, I suppose I might also offer." He put forth.
Kung Lao became excited. "Awesome, we'll be like sidekicks!" He joked, earning a slight laugh from Liu Kang. "I've been waiting to try out that hat I've been working on."
"You're still working on that? Everyone including me in this temple has told you that hat is way too dangerous."
"Come on, Liu Kang, if we're gonna be in a tournament we have to have our own special things right?"
"We don't even know if we're going to have the opportunity to fight in the tournament, it's an offer that not everyone can get Kung Lao."
Just then, thunder could be heard from outside, and bright lighting filled the temple. The monks in the dining room hurried outside to see as just a moment ago it was clear sky's out. Liu Kang and Kung Lao got up from the table and rushed outside along with the other monks. The sunny sky had been replaced by dark clouds and roaring thunder and lightning. A section of the clouds parted as Raiden materialized within the temple's tranquil grounds, he was greeted by the sight of monks training diligently, their bodies moving gracefully in sync with their powerful minds. Seeing his presence, the elder monk approached Raiden with genuine respect, recognizing the Thunder God before him.
"Lord Raiden, do what do we own this pleasure?" The elder monk asked.
"I come in search of a warrior," Raiden spoke with a voice reminiscent of thunderbolts. "Who among your order is willing to face the perils of Mortal Kombat and protect our realm?"
Silence fell upon the temple, broken only by the breeze rustling through the leaves. Liu Kang and Kung Lao were shocked, they didn't think the opportunity would present itself this quickly. However, Kung Lao grabbed Liu Kang's hand and halted him towards Raiden. "We accept your offer, Lord Raiden!" Kung Lao announced while walking up. Liu Kang walked beside Kung Lao up to the thunder God, his heart pounded.
"What are your names, young men?" Raiden asked with curiosity.
"We are Liu Kang and Kung Lao." Kung Lao answered with pride. "Paragons of virtue and devout followers of the Shaolin code. Lord Raiden, we offer ourselves as your champions," Kung Lao declared while Liu Kang nodded in agreement, bowing before the Thunder God. "For we have long yearned for a purpose greater than our own, to defend the realm from the forces of darkness."
Impressed by the two men's bravery, Raiden scanned their souls, searching for the unwavering resolve required to undertake such an arduous task. With a nod of approval, Raiden bestowed an ancient talisman, imbued with fiery energy. "One of you may take this and may it serve as a beacon of power when you face the challenges of Mortal Kombat," Raiden spoke, his voice filled with confidence. "Train harder than ever before, for the fate of our realm rests upon your shoulders."
Both Liu Kang and Kung Lao hesitated to take the talisman waiting for the other one to reach for it first. Liu Kang gestured for Kung Lao to take it implying it was all his. Kung Lao chuckled. "Take it, Liu Kang, you deserve it more, plus, I have my hat." He praised.
Liu Kang, humbled yet determined, accepted the talisman graciously. As he attached the talisman to his shirt, he felt the burning energy of fire coursing through his veins, his eyes glowed, and his hands became engulfed in flames. He now wielded the power of fire in his hands.
Kung Lao stared in awe as his friend now had the power of fire flowing through him, he felt a little jealous but he didn't let anyone see it. After all, he offered the talisman to him.
"I suggest you two gather your belongings as we have a long road ahead of us," Raiden suggested.
"Certainly Lord Raiden." Liu Kang responded as he and Kung Lao walked to their dorms to pack their things. They received many cheers of applause from the other monks as they walked through the garden. They made it to their rooms and packed their stuff. Kung Lao picked up the hat he had been modifying to be a weapon. It had a razor-sharp rim around it making it a deadly projectile. He wore it on his head and picked up his bags as did Liu Kang. They traveled back to Raiden who was waiting patiently.
"It is now time for the next chapter of your lives young ones. I trust that you two will be ready." He spoke.
"We are ready Lord Raiden." Liu Kang replied.
"Then let us leave for our next task. I thank you both for your help." Raiden rejoiced as he opened a portal behind him he gestured for the monks to follow which they did as they waved farewell to their fellow monks.
As the monks stepped through the portal, they were met with an otherworldly sight. A Sky Temple that seemed to float above the clouds, drenched in the soft glow of ethereal energy. Its towering spires reached into the heavens, emanating an aura of divinity.
Raiden welcomed them in, gesturing towards the vast training grounds that surrounded the temple. "Welcome, Liu Kang and Kung Lao, to my sanctuary. Here, you shall harness your skills and hone your powers as we await the arrival of our destined champions."
Liu Kang and Kung Lao exchanged glances, the weight of their newfound responsibility settling upon their shoulders. They nodded in unison.
Raiden led them to an expansive courtyard, where training dummies stood ready for their prowess. Lightning crackled in the distance, filling the air with electricity. Raiden's voice resonated through the temple as he spoke, "In this holy sanctuary, you and your fellow champions will push yourselves beyond your limits. Each strike, each parry, shall forge you into the formidable warriors you are destined to be."
Liu Kang and Kung Lao gave Raiden determined looks. They both were up to the challenges that awaited them and their soon-to-be-known allies.
"For now I must go as I have other champions to scout for. I shall return momentarily. I suggest you two start your training while I'm gone." Raiden advised.
"Yes, Lord Raiden." Liu Kang said as he bowed.
Raiden nodded as he put his hand in the sky shooting out a lightning strike and then he vanished.
Liu Kang and Kung Lao gave each other a stare of nervousness as they took a glance at the courtyard filled with training dummies like Raiden said but also shields and weapons. They both took a deep breath in as they mentally prepared themselves for what was about to come.
In the depths of thoughts, Raiden, found himself in search of another extraordinary champion to join the ranks of Earthrealms defense. Raiden's eyes fell upon Johnny Cage, a Hollywood actor yearning for a taste of glory in a world that only saw him as an entertainer. Unbeknownst to Johnny, a dormant power lingered within him, an ancient force inherited from his ancestors who were once bred to safeguard gods. Hidden deep within his bloodline, he possessed the potential to become a true hero, a savior of realms, but with Johnny's know stubbornness and arrogance, Raiden saw this as a tough one to crack, still he remained optimistic.
Johnny Cage basked in glory in his mountain-top mansion in Hollywood, he sat on his brand-new couch drinking a glass of wine as he lay back, full of pride. He loved his house, girlfriend, career, everything, but, he wasn't really sure if he loved himself. All his life, he always sought out to be better than everyone around him, or else he thought he wasn't good enough which made him into the prick he was now. He turned to martial arts in an attempt to prove himself yet he wasn't sure if would be put to good use anytime soon.
"I thought I told you to stop drinking on the weekdays." A feminine voice said from behind. Johnny turned his head to see his girlfriend looking down at him with a sour look. Her blond hair was tied back in a tight ponytail and the muscles in her arms became more visible as she crossed them.
Johnny rolled his eyes. "Look, Sonya, I'm trying, I'm just waiting for Paul to hit me back with a role then I'll be fine. He explained.
Sonya grew annoyed she grabbed the glass out of Johnny's hand and broke it, spilling the remaining liquid.
"What the hell, babe?" Johnny exclaimed as he got up from the couch.
"Don't "babe" me, you said you would change when we first met so I gave you a chance but you never hold up to your word!"
Johnny felt defeated as Sonya scolded him. He knew she was right deep down and he knew she deserved better than him. "I'm sorry, Sonya." He softly apologized.
"Then show it, Johnny," Sonya growled. Every day that passed in their relationship things have gone south, at first Johnny was head over heels in love with her. He surprisingly had a thing for military women, but after his career went downhill, so did his self-esteem and his relationship.
"I'm guessing you want to break up?" Johnny asked bluntly.
Sonya gave him a sympathetic look, she put her arms around him and squeezed. "I love you, Johnny, I really do, but I think it's for the best. Until you get back on your feet."
Johnny held his head down, he once again knew she was right and he accepted defeat. "I understand."
Johnny and Sonya looked at each other for a while before a bright light filled the room and Raiden appeared in front of the now broken-up couple. Sonya stood her ground while Johnny was still processing what happened.
"Good evening Johnny Cage, and Sonya Blade. I am Lord Raiden, God of Thunder, and Protector of Earthrealm. I have come to speak with Johnny Cage about an important upcoming event."
Sonya was at a loss for words as she continued to stand her ground at the deity in front of her. She looked at Johnny who thought he had one too many drinks.
"You're seeing this too right babe?" Johnny asked all dazed.
Sonya groaned. "We just broke-" She then took a deep breath in. "Yes, yes I am."
"I apologize for interrupting your personal conversation but I have come on a matter of grave importance." Raiden made clear.
Sonya eased up as Johnny walked up to Raiden.
"So, what exactly is it that you're here for?" He asked confused, "I don't have any gigs planned right now, Are you sure you're in the right place."
"Johnny, I highly doubt he is here for an acting gig." Sonya interrupted holding her head with her palm.
"Johnny I am here to gather champions for the Mortal Kombat tournament. I believe you would be a worthy candidate to defend Earthrealm."
Johnny felt like he was on cloud nine. "An Earth what?" He inquired with a bit of sarcasm.
"He means the earth we are on Johnny." Sonya injected once again while rolling her eyes.
"Ah I see, but what makes you think I have what it takes? I'm just an actor. I'm nothing special."
Raiden's expression softened as he approached Johnny. "I have watched you from afar, Johnny Cage," Raiden spoke. "Beneath the superficial facade of fame, there is a power that awaits discovery within you."
Johnny's eyes widened in disbelief as Raiden continued. Sonya listened in.
"Your ancestors were chosen guardians, entrusted with protecting the gods themselves," Raiden explained. "That same noble blood runs through your veins."
Johnny Cage, standing in awe of the divine entity before him, hardly dared to believe such fantastical tales. Yet, somewhere deep within his soul, an ember of curiosity sparked, yearning for validation. "Shit sounds like that one movie I did back in Miami." He joked. "I'm in, what's next?"
Raiden smiled. "We will travel to the sky temple where you will meet your fellow champions, you will all go through intense training to perfect your abilities." He explained.
Sonya walked up to Raiden. "I'll come too." She chimed in. "I dedicated my life to the country I sure as hell would dedicate it to the realm."
Johnny flashed her a grin. "That's why I love her, never turns down a challenge."
Raiden urged the two to pack their things as the amount of time they would be gone was unknown. After gathering their stuff, Johnny and Sonya made it to the sky temple where they were quickly acquainted with Liu Kang and Kung Lao.
"Nice hat my dude." Johnny chatted motioning to Kung Lao who gushed with happiness that someone thought it was a good idea.
After Raiden had left once more to find one more champion. Sonya pulled Johnny aside. "I'm proud of you Johnny." She voiced.
Johnny was surprised to hear Sonya praise him. "Really? I thought I was nothing but a screw-up." He replied.
"I mean yeah, you're arrogant, stubborn, and an impulse buyer but I think participating in this tournament would make you into a better man."
Johnny smiled at Sonya as she encouraged him. "So does this mean we're?-"
"No, we're not together."
"Got it."
Hours had ticked by since Johnny and Sonya had arrived at the majestic Sky Temple. They anxiously waited for the return of Raiden, who had gone on one final mission to find the final champion to aid them in the tournament.
At long last, Raiden emerged, followed closely by his chosen warrior. With a smile on his face, Raiden addressed the gathered Earthrealmers, "Allow me to present to you Kenshi Takahashi, a master swordsman and a true warrior."
Kenshi, with a calm demeanor and unwavering focus, stepped forward. He belonged to a lineage of revered swordsmen, having honed his skills as part of a proud family clan. In his hands, he wielded his blade, Sento, a weapon forged with utmost precision and imbued with mystical abilities. Liu Kang welcomed Kenshi as he adjusted to his new living situation.
Raiden, stepped forward before the gathered champions. His blue eyes sparked, mirroring the energy surging through his ethereal form. "My esteemed champions," Raiden boomed, his voice like rolling thunder, "I have gathered you here today for a dire purpose. Our realm, Earthrealm, is in grave danger, and Mortal Kombat is our only hope."
Liu Kang and Kung Lao exchanged determined glances, their loyalty and brotherhood binding them tight. Liu Kang stepped forward, his voice filled with determination. "We shall not falter, Raiden. As Shaolin monks, it is our duty to protect Earthrealm."
Kung Lao nodded in agreement, his eyes fierce and unwavering. "Together, we will overcome any opposition that threatens our world."
Raiden's gaze shifted to the next champion, the flamboyant Hollywood actor. "Johnny Cage, are you prepared to prove yourself in the greatest fight of your life?"
Johnny smirked, striking a heroic pose. "Absolutely, Raiden. It's time to show the world that I'm more than just a pretty face on the silver screen."
Sonya Blade, the no-nonsense Special Forces member, folded her arms and glanced skeptically at Johnny. "We'll see about that, Johnny. This is no movie set. It's a battle."
Kenshi listened intently. With a nod, he spoke softly, "I will honor your faith in me, Raiden. My blade is at Earthrealm's disposal."
Raiden's eyes ignited with determination as he surveyed the assembled champions. "Remember, only those who truly believe in themselves and our cause shall compete. Prepare yourselves, for Mortal Kombat awaits."
And with that, days turned into weeks and weeks turned into months as the Kombatants trained endlessly. They were pushed psychically, mentally, and spiritually to their fullest potential as the outworld Kombatants would not go easy on them.
