Love wasn’t a part of his code

Summary:

Sam Nook finds out his underlying code.

(Flufftober) Day Twenty-Five: Nook

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

When Sam Nook was created, it was for a simple purpose. Build up the Subbin Empire and nothing else that’s important. (No, that’s not right…) He spends most of his days roaming the streets and checking on the surrounding areas for anything that stands out. Almost like a Warden, which sounds super fun. (His creator made a Warden before locking him away). Most of the people love seeing him walk past and even the children come to ask for Sam Nook to play with them.

Of course, he always has to remind them that he has too much work to do at the moment.

(Why do they appear scared every time, though?)

Sam Nook returned back to the palace and went back to his workshop where the guards waited outside until he was finished. It’s quite kind of the Emperor to keep an eye on him. Emperor Porkius VII is a strange Piglin but most of them seem to like their king, just like he has done for Sam Nook.

There’s a knock at the door and without warning it opens.

A man stands in the doorway who looks like everyone else in this Empire but with a more orange theme going on. He seems a bit awkward but there’s nothing that feels wrong about the man.

“Sam Nook,” the robot puts his hand out to the man after going over. He has seen many introduce themselves and put out their hands to shake. It only makes sense that he does the same. “It’s nice to meet you.”

“Uh, Flynn.” Flynn loosely shakes Sam Nook’s hand. “I guess we’re working together for the next month.”

Sam Nook wasn’t told about a partnership but that doesn’t matter. He only got to work with a few others during his lifetime. His creator was the primary one and…actually, what was Sam Nook going on about? Probably doesn’t matter. Frankly, it’s exciting to have someone new joining.

“Let me show you around the workshop then.”

Flynn is an odd human with his strange quirks and bird-like movements. Almost like he was meant to have wings accompanying him but he doesn’t. Sam Nook started studying birds around the Empire and went well into the night in making plans for a pair of wings that Flynn would like. He doesn’t understand why he wants to be friends with the other so badly.

(He does…it’s been a long time since someone saw him for him.)

Maybe he’s broken?

Sam Nook couldn’t help but ask Flynn for help to make sure there was nothing wrong with him. Flynn chuckles and puts the back of his hand against Sam Nook’s forehead and states that he’s a little warm but nothing to worry about. Maybe he needs more sunlight.

That’s when the morning walks were introduced into their routine. Flynn would arrive with coffee and Sam Nook went about gathering up what they would need before they left for a walk. They would stop at the same café and go over plans and whatnot while sharing a meal before heading back to the palace. It’s nice and strange and Sam Nook still isn’t sure how to feel anymore. Always following a code that tells him what he should be feeling at that moment.

Until he realizes that his code isn’t any help anymore.

There’s a bubbly feeling that builds beneath the surface and Sam Nook doesn’t know what to do with it. Maybe he should ask Flynn but he’s worried that the man would brush it off again. That’s what happened the first time and Sam Nook worries that he’s making things a bigger deal than it was.

“I think there’s something wrong with me,” Sam Nook finally said.

They are sitting at their café and Flynn has been lazily stirring his coffee while looking over at a set of blueprints. Sam Nook couldn’t focus on the papers in front of him and could only stare at Flynn for an answer about what was wrong with him.

Flynn set down his spoon and reached over to put the back of his hand against Sam Nook’s forehead. “There’s nothing wrong, Nook.” Then he pulled away and went back to the prints. “You’re just in love, whoever it is must be special.”

“What?” Sam Nook doesn’t understand. “That’s not something that I can do.”

“Of course it is.” Flynn sighs and gives Sam Nook his attention again. “Everyone is capable of feeling love, no matter what kind it is. Though, I’m not the best judge for that.”

Sam Nook wants to fight back against this but Flynn is already packing up and telling him that it is time to go. There are still so many questions and Sam Nook wants to understand more because he wasn’t created for this. (What was the reason for his creation?) He was made to build things and keep others who work with him safe.

Love wasn’t a part of his code.

"You okay, Nook?” Flynn asks, noticing that the robot isn’t following. He offers his hand out to Sam Nook. “Come on, we got work to finish.”

Sam Nook reached out and surprisingly it was easy to allow Flynn to take the lead.

Maybe love is always a part of him.

(The very fountain of his being was love.)

And maybe that’s not a bad thing…

Notes:

Most likely not what the prompt was talking about but it's been a bit since I have written about my boy Sam Nook and couldn't help myself.

Anyway, hopefully, you enjoyed and have a nice day/night!
