Work Text:
Marlene Mckinnon and Mary Macdonald have been best friends for about twelve years now. They met when they were five,at preschool. And now they're seventeen, going on eighteen, and almost nothing has changed.
Marlene still plays guitar, begs her mum to bleach her hair, drinks cherry slush puppies and dresses boldly. And she still follows Mary around like a puppy, you could call it puppy love.
Mary still sings, still ties her hair in ribbons, drinks fruit punch fanta and dresses like your great grandma in the 40s. And she still looks away when Marlene looks back. She loved the blonde terribly.
They used to sit at the park, on the same concrete blocks at the parkour segment, and mary would gleefully scream,
"I'm gonna be the next Monica Lewinsky!"
Marlene didn't even know who she was,and Mary didn't either. But Marlene loved like a dog,and as dogs do,she got excited at the sight of marys own excited and she couldn't help but scream back,
"Yeah you are! My best friend's gonna be a scandal!"
And there they were, two nine hear old children screaming about how famous they're gonna be. You wouldn't believe the amount of stares they got. But they didn't care,in their world,it was just them. Mary and Marlene. Marlene and Mary. Nothing could hurt them there.
And really, nothing changed between the two. Only, now they were in Mary's bedroom, it was eleven at night and they were tucked under her strawberry scented blankets, watching movies and laughing quietly together. Both would rather be here than anywhere else. They had just finished watching the maze runner trilogy and decided to call it a night. The duo often slept in each others beds,it wasn't new it wasn't weird. They'd sit there and tell eachother their deepest inhibitions, their most unreachable dreams, their hopes. There truly wasn't anything Marlene Mckinnon didn't know about Mary macdonald, and vise-versa.
Just as Marlene was to turn to the wall,Mary put a hand on her shoulder, prompting her to stop and turn back to the brunette. Marlene looked at her with curious eyes, and Mary took that as a cue to talk,
"Marls, what do you want to do? When we graduate, what are you gonna do?"
Marlene was caught off guard by the question, her nad Mary never had deep conversations,it was just adrenaline when the two talked.
"Who knows. Work a nine to five, adopt a dog. Buy a van. I haven't thought about it much, not at all really." Truthfully, she preferred to not think about her life in the future. "What about you? Whats the great Mary Macdonald gonna persue?"
Mary answered quickly, putting almost no thought into her words, her passion had always stayed the same as it was,
"I'm gonna sing. I'm going to go on to be a famous singer, a popstar, a rockstar. I don't care,I want to perform for the world Marlene, I want to play in sold out stadiums." Mary slipped out of the bed as she talked, energy that had previously been dimmed was now burning.
Marlene felt as if her own heart was burning. Blazing.
"In Fact,I'm going to be Brittany spears level,i want to be an equal, i wanna make history Marlene! I'm gonna be in the walls of fame!" She grabbed Marlene's hand and spun the two around. She laughed.
"Is that so? Well,if that's the case,I'll go with you. I'll be your Manager, ill go on all your tours,I'll always be waiting for you backstage, you're going to be a star Mary."
You already are. The words that went unsaid. They likely always would be left unsaid, and Marlene could live that. As long as she had Mary's eyes, she could live with anything.
"Damn right i am! And you'll be right by my side, i wouldn't do a thing without you Marls, so you need to be there for me,okay? And once i get famous, and i get those checks,I'll get you whatever you want, I'll buy the world if you want." Mary tugged Marlene forward with the hand already in hers, she wrapped her arms around the others waist and rested her chin on her head. More words left unspoken.
Marlene leaned her forehead on the girls shoulder, her obvious smile pressed against her collarbone. She nodded. No matter how insane Marys ideals sounded, Marlene never doubted them, not for a second.
Marys unwavering passion kept Marlene warm, and Marlene's blind trust kept Mary steady. In another universe, maybe they'd be oil and water, but in this one,in this one they were flowers and sun.
Nothing had really changed.
