Work Text:
You had never been to a party with your boyfriend Adam, due to you both not really liking them. Your weekends were usually spent watching movies on the couch. This Saturday night was different though, as your best friend had invited you to her birthday party and really wanted you and Adam to come along. Adam hadn’t been to any social event since his Jigsaw trap, but he was recovering well and was willing to give it a try. It was better to go with first to prepare for any gigs he would have to attend on his own for work.
It is half an hour before the party begins, and Adam is ready in a casual blue shirt, a white t-shirt underneath, and dark jeans. His hair is also neater than usual, but still has that messy look that suits him best. You emerge from the bathroom soon after with your hair straightened and glossy, your natural makeup perfectly applied and you are wearing a black strapless dress with a flared skirt. You wear casual black converse with it, but it works perfectly.
Adam admires your complexion silently for a moment, his eyes wide with devotion. He then blushes as he makes his way over to you. “Oh my God, you look beautiful! I mean you always look beautiful but….holy shit.” You also blush as you wrap your arms around his waist and pull him closer to you. “You’re not so bad yourself, handsome,” you say before kissing him. He hums into your lips with satisfaction but then remembers the time. “We better…get going,” he tells you between kisses, which is when you stop and look at your watch. “Yeah, *bff’s name* will be expecting us to arrive on time.”
Luckily, the two of you make it to your best friend’s house at eight o’clock on the dot. She jumps into your arms as soon as she answers the door to you. “*Name!* You made it!” she squeals. “Hey happy birthday!” you respond excitedly before she lets you go. She beams further seeing Adam. “Long time no see, man. How are you holding up?” It takes a second for Adam to respond, as any reference to the bathroom makes him extremely anxious. “Yeah, I’m good, thanks. Happy Birthday,” he then says, returning the smile. It is nice that some people care.
Your friend greets the two inside, where a few guests have already shown up. The living room is lit up with vibrant colours, due to a disco ball spinning on the ceiling. A random DJ is setting his speakers up in the corner, and there are balloons stuck on the walls. This overwhelms both you and Adam for a moment. “Jesus, you went all out,” you compliment as your friend brings you to the kitchen. “Thank you. I’ve always wanted a disco-themed party,” she replies, showing you to the kitchen counter where plates of junk food are neatly displayed. On the other side, there is a line of alcoholic drinks and sodas. “Help yourselves to anything,” she announces before she runs off to meet another person who just arrived. The two of you continue to stare at the food table, almost stunned by the amount of sweets and crisps that are on it. “This is insane. The only parties I’ve ever been to are the ones where we’d meet up in someone’s shitty apartment to drink and smoke weed. They were so boring,” Adam remarks. “Yeah, this is far from boring,” you answer, taking in the radiant decorations. You then take Adam’s hand. “Let me introduce you to some of my friends.”
An hour or so passes, and the party gets livelier by the minute. Many people are drunkenly dancing to the DJ’s awful remixes, others are picking food in the crowded kitchen and you and Adam are sitting in a quiet area chatting to your friends. Adam was a bit shy at first as he had never met any of your other pals, but they were friendly and he could be himself around them. His sarcastic humour had them in fits of laughter multiple times. Typical Adam.
Soon, your friends encourage you to go dancing with them. Adam doesn’t get up immediately so you check on him. “Is it okay if I go outside? I think I need a cigarette,” he tells you. You smile at him. “You don’t have to ask, Ad. I’ll meet you back here in a few.” Adam nods and says to you before you leave; “also, I fucking hate dancing.” You laugh at this known fact. “Don’t blame you, the music’s really bad. I’m just gonna find someone else to stand in the corner with.” You give him a quick kiss on the lips before you both separate.
Adam is alone outside, leaning against the railing of the porch as he smokes. His smoking habits have gotten much better since the trap, but having one a day still gives him a bit of relief. He also admires the lit-up town ahead, internally jealous that your friend has this view from her house. As he continues to enjoy the peace and quiet, he hears footsteps emerging from behind. He happily turns around thinking it is you, but it is not. His smile drops as he sees his childhood best friend, Scott Tibbs. They haven’t spoken since Adam got out of the trap and Scott’s ego became too big to help his claimed best friend out.
Scott abruptly points at Adam’s almost-finished cigarette. “Give me one of those.” Adam rolls his eyes and turns back towards the view. “No fucking chance.” Scott doesn’t seem to take no for an answer and places himself beside Adam. “Come on. Do a solid for your buddy, will you?” he pesters. “We’re not friends,” Adam responds bluntly, not giving his fake friend the time of day. Again Scott doesn’t take this and begins to groan dramatically. “God, you’re such a dick!” Adam can’t help but chuckle at the hypocrisy. “That’s rich coming from you, Scott.”
Scott sighs audibly, clearly ignoring Adam’s desire for him to leave him alone. “Who the fuck invited you anyway? You’re way too much of a pussy to be at a party like this.” Adam glares at Scott as he puts out his cigarette. “*Bff’s name* has been buddies with my girlfriend their whole lives, dipshit. I’m her plus one. I’m also wondering who invited your irritating ass, huh?” Scott ignores the question and gasps. “You with a girlfriend? You’re fucking hilarious, bro.”
“Why are you surprised? You were friends with my ex for God’s sake,” Adam scowls. Scott begins to laugh. “I know, but you broke up with her for no reason.” Adam clenches his teeth, beginning to lose his cool. “Not for no reason! She was so controlling, narcissistic and she used me. She was pretty much another version of you. No wonder you got on so well.” Adam winks sarcastically at Scott, and he scoffs. “I don’t need your fucking blessing.”
You enter the scene before Scott gets to annoy Adam more. You had never met him, but you knew exactly who he was due to all the stories Adam had told you about him. He looked exactly like you pictured with his badly styled hair, hardcore stubble, tight band shirt, and his jeans lowered to the point where most of his underwear showed. Adam turns around and sighs with relief after seeing you. “Oh, thank God!” He makes his way over to you as Scott stares at you in shock. He is either attracted to you or he is baffled that Adam is dating someone like you. It seems to be both. “Jesus, Adam! You’ve pulled a fucking ride!”
Adam begins to stand up for you, but you cut in to tell him off yourself. “Don’t call me that, you asshole. Comments like that are the reason you’ll be single for life.” Adam begins to laugh at Scott, impressed with your comeback. “Watch what you’re saying,” Scott argues back with humiliation. “You have no idea of the amount of chicks that want me.” You and Adam continue to laugh, not able to take him seriously. “You’re delusional, man,” Adam comments as Scott begins to storm inside. Adam then kisses you while he is still watching, which makes him march away like a child throwing a tantrum.
The two of you are now laughing your heads off. You are aware that what you did was kind of mean, but Scott had it coming. This was nothing compared to the way he treated Adam for most of his life. “Jesus, he’s just as annoying in real life,” you remark. “He’s an idiot,” Adam responds. “I think he’s off to fuck my ex.” You begin to snicker. “The feminist vegan punk?” Adam begins to giggle himself. “Yeah. He can do what he wants. They’re a match made in heaven.” You both laugh among yourselves, before kissing again. It becomes more passionate and it is clear that Adam is so thankful to have someone like you.
You continue to make out for a while until your friend stumbles drunkenly onto the porch. “S’up Lovebirds!” she exclaims, which startles the two of you, pulling away quickly. “Oh, it’s just you,” you then say, relieved. She’s not the type of friend that is phased, drunk or not. Your friend nods as she holds onto the door frame to keep herself from falling. “It’s time for my birthday cake. Get in here!” She spins herself around and heads inside expecting you both to follow her.
“We could be here for a while,” you say, referring to your drunk bestie whom you may have to look after for the night. You don’t mind though, since it's her birthday. Adam doesn’t mind either. “Yeah, that’s okay. More time to piss off Scott, right?” You chuckle as you take your hand in his. “Absolutely. This is gonna be fun.” You give him one last kiss before heading inside, ready for the rest of the night to be chaotic, but amazing. It’s always amazing when you and Adam are together.
