Work Text:
Everyone knows that all kids love treehouses. I mean, it's a cozy little wooden house in the trees where you can watch everything through a bird's eye view and relax -- what's not to love?
Rin and Miku certainly weren't an exception. Although they had both always loved the concept of having a treehouse, they never got the chance to actually build one, and so they could only daydream about them.
Fortunately, here we find them now, in Rin's yard, on a clear, sunny morning, with blueprints, tools and materials spread out on the grass, ready to finally build a goddamn treehouse after countless summer breaks spent fantasizing.
They both looked incredibly focused on the blueprints and also incredibly confused, because a) maths and measurements were not their strong suit, and b) the blueprints weren't even made by them - they were made by Rin's aunt, Luka, who was one of the only people in the Crypton family who could actually draft things like this. The only other person who could was Meiko, but she was a bit busy this time around, and plus Luka was the true math whizz of the family, so she let her do it instead in order to produce better results.
After a few more minutes of silence, Miku asked, "Okay, how much did you score on our latest math exam? Be honest."
"Not a score that I'm too proud of." Rin answered, still staring at all the measurements and dimensions, looking very concentrated but ultimately getting pretty much nowhere.
"Yeah, me too." Miku said, laughing quietly. "So.. uh, I think we might need to ask for hel-"
"NO!" Rin stood up from the ground abruptly, sticking her hands in the air quite comically and theatrically, much to her girlfriend's amusement. "I REFUSE to accept anyone's aid! This is OUR treehouse, made BY and FOR US and us ONLY!" she had a very determined look on her face, which also looked very cute, and made Miku smile like an idiot.
"Okay, okay, that's great and all but, like, we can't even understand the blueprints. Like, for example, how does this connect with this, where does it go-" Miku began pointing to various things on the paper.
Rin got down on the grass again, still with the same facial expression. "It connects with this piece like this, through three .05 milimeter holes that we'll drill in these three places with the small drill!" she began pointing at the same spots, but much faster and more erratically than Miku. "This goes here, which is why this goes on the parallel side of it in order to support the bottom, and that's why THIS goes over here, and, and--" by the end of all of that pointing and explaining, she was out of breath and she fell back. "And it's done. That's the treehouse."
Miku looked stunned.
"...How did you just suddenly understand all of that???"
"I, uh.." Rin pondered, then she just shrugged. "I don't know. I got a little angry and it just sort of.. clicked." after a pause, she added, "I guess it clicked because I didn't want to hinder my pride by asking for help and so I just got upset because I wanted to prove myself, I guess? And it worked? Somehow??"
They looked at each other in confusion and, after a few moments of silence, both burst in laughter at Rin's 'epiphany' of how to build a basic treehouse at the same time.
After wiping the tears of laughter from their eyes, they both scrunched up their sleeves, climbed up the tree they had chosen (it was the biggest and most cozy-looking one in the yard), took the wooden planks they had prepared beforehand together with the couple of drills, and got to work.
It was a bit challenging at first, this having been either of their first times building something completely alone. The planks were heavy and hard to manouever in the relatively small space between the branches, and not to mention that this was also their first time ever working with drills, so it was hard for them to drill holes and not drop the drills themselves lots of times. Spoiler alert, they did drop them lots of times. It was relatively often that they had to climb down, get the dropped drills, climb back up and get back to work. It was tedious, but there wasn't anything else they could do. And Rin also injured her finger at one point, so she had to put a band-aid around it.
Finally, after almost an entire afternoon of nonstop working, the treehouse was finished. Rin and Miku quickly climbed down to the ground and gazed up in astonishment at their accomplishment, eyes filled with pride.
They high-fived with both hands. "WE DID IT!"
"Phew, that was exhausting!" Miku sighed, smiling.
"We have to let the others know!" Rin exclaimed, halfway to the door to the house already. Miku heard "Len, we made a treehouse! Mom, come out to look, we made a treehouse! Dad, you won't believe what we just made! Luka, do you remember those blueprints?--" and other such phrases being thrown around the rooms of the house by Rin, who sounded utterly over the moon, as she followed at her heels.
In a matter of minutes, the whole family was out in the yard, looking up at the surprisingly well-made treehouse with amazement and pride in the two girls, who were up in it and were waving at them from above.
"Just so you know, Len, you aren't allowed up here." Rin sneered at her brother.
"Oh, shut up, you--" Len began immidietaly retaliating but was shushed by his aunt, Luka, who said, "I didn't expect you guys to be able to do it without any help. It looks great." her voice was calm and collected, but everyone could see the proudness in her sincere eyes and smile.
"You guys are amazing! I mean, without any help whatsoever! I'm so proud of you!!" Meiko was brimming with joy and love for the two whilst Kaito was nodding enthusiastically and snapping a few photos of them from below to save the moment and look back on the joy of it later.
While Miku and Rin were laughing and getting down from the treehouse, Meiko dashed back into the house. Once they arrived back down, they looked confused as to why she had suddenly left, but then she returned with a big plate of pancakes. "As a reward for your hard work!" she smiled.
The two girls practically gasped out of joy. They hadn't eaten in a while and were incredibly hungry due to the hours spent working, but even without those circumstances, the pancakes looked incredibly delicious. They thanked Meiko profusely and loud and happy conversation started to buzz in the yard between everyone.
It was almost dark out by now and Meiko said that the two could eat together up in the treehouse if they wanted. They happily agreed and started climbing up the tree with their pancakes and two fluffy blankets that they had brought while everyone else went back into the house.
"Today was a good day." Miku proclaimed with a huge smile on her face.
Rin was also smiling broadly, but she had just taken a big bite out of her pancake and her mouth was full, so she just nodded enthusiastically before swallowing it down and saying, "I'm so glad we finally got to do this. We're going to be spending so much time up here from now on!"
They both started laughing loudly, mouths smeared with syrup. They could see the lights from inside the house and everyone's sillhouettes moving about and they could hear the laughter from inside.
For a day, all of life was as simple as building a treehouse with your girlfriend, seeing everyone be happy, and eating delicious warm pancakes with her to celebrate.
And all of the sweat, the tedious climbing up and down to retrieve dropped drills, and the bandaged finger were all worth it.
