“I wonder what Malfoy thinks is so funny?” Harry said frowning, his green eyes narrowed in suspicion as he surveyed the blonde boy across the great hall.
“Who cares?” Ron said, yawning as he nicked a piece of bacon off of your plate “he’s just a stupid git.”
Normally you’d have smacked Ron’s hand away and chastised him for stealing your breakfast but for once you didn’t even notice. When Harry had pointed out Draco’s laughter you accidentally did the thing that you tried so hard not to do when it came to Draco - you looked at him. You followed Harry’s eyeline and suddenly there he was sitting at the Slytherin table laughing so hard it made his blonde hair shake slightly and you were no longer at the Gryffindor table with your friends, you were locked in a memory.
You were sitting, bored, in the kitchen at Malfoy manor waiting for Draco to wake up. Your mother and Narcissa were chatting in the background, when a large tawny owl swooped through the french doors and dropped two letters onto your plate. When you saw the Hogwarts crest printed clearly on the back you squealed with excitement.
“Dray!” you screamed “Our letters are here!”
You heard a loud crash from above, presumably Draco falling out of bed, and then hurried footsteps on the landing. “Draco!” Narcissa chastised in her haughty parent voice “we do not run -” but he wasn’t listening to her as he pulled his letter from your hand.
After quickly scanning the letters you looked at each other, your eyes filled with childlike wonder and excitement. “I can’t believe we’re going to Hogwarts in less than two months” you sighed dreamily.
Draco nodded, his eyes twinkling with excitement “I can’t wait to see the common room, father says you can see the entire lake from the windows since it’s in the dungeons.”
“Who says you’ll be put in Slytherin?” you teased smirking slyly at him “you could be a hufflepuff.”
Draco laughed, his messy bed head of blonde curls shaking into his eyes “of course i'll be a Slytherin” he said “all Malfoys are.”
“What if I'm not a Slytherin?” you asked him, a hint of fear in your voice.
“Don’t be ridiculous” Draco said “your whole family has been in Slytherin of course you will be.”
You nodded smiling thankfully at him; however your smile soon turned into a scowl when you realised he’d managed to snag your last piece of toast while you were distracted. “Oi! you little thief” you shouted reaching out to take the toast back from him, he stood up and held it above his head with a triumphant smirk pasted onto his face as you failed to reach it. “Midget” he joked and you pouted at him causing him to laugh. He laughed so hard his eyes shone transforming them from their usual stormy grey to an almost molten silver. He was so happy, so full of joy that it was contagious and soon you were laughing too, doubled over clutching at your stomach.
“What’s got you two so happy?” Narcissa asked amusedly.
“I - I can’t even remember” you wheezed and Cissa and your mother shook their heads, chuckling fondly.
You looked over at Draco, the pale morning sun illuminating his platinum hair and smiled. You couldn’t wait to go to Hogwarts because then you’d get to see your best friend every day and laugh with him every morning.
“Y/N” Ron said waving a hand in front of your face “are you okay?”
You jumped, abruptly pulled from the memory “what? Yeah i'm fine sorry I just spaced out for a sec” you said giving them a shaky smile.
You glanced over at Draco one last time and though you weren’t close enough to see you knew that his grey eyes had gone silver with the laughter, you knew his hair was falling in his face as his head shook. You closed your eyes slightly and sighed, it haunted you that you couldn’t forget the little nuances he had. Draco may have been someone that you loathed now, someone so far away from who you’d grown up with that he was basically a stranger to you but you would know his laugh anywhere. A large part of you wished and wished that you could forget it.
