Captain Miller waited until his squad had all fallen asleep before he allowed himself to drift off to sleep. And as he did he dreamed of a beautiful dream of a memory of home, his wife and his children. . .
The date was late May 1941, it was the last day of school John Miller had just finished up packing up all his papers and supplies from the school year and was walking out to his car. He drove the relatively short drive to his house. Getting out of the car he could hear the voices of his sons and youngest daughter filtering through the trees. He smiled, they were happy school was over, he was too. There was no way he could have known what was coming, and that by the lend of the year America would be pulled into the 2nd World War (But we are getting ahead of ourselves).
Walking into the house John called out, “Honey, I’m home.” His senses were bombarded with scent of fresh baked chocolate chip cookies.
“I’m in the kitchen,” came the voice of his wife. He came in and gave her a quick kiss and gave his oldest daughter a hug. “Well, we were just about finished with these cookies. And Lisa was going to clean up the kitchen, since it was her idea to make cookies.”
“What!! No fair!” Exclaimed the 14 year old.
“Hey, hey no arguing with your mom if she says you’re cleaning it,” said Miller. “How was your day Meg?”
“Oh, well asides from cleaning, sweeping, mopping and making cookies not much,” said Meg, as she put a hand on her forehead and began to laugh. “I just realized I forgot to get chicken for the fired chicken at the butcher. I guess we’re just having salad and vegetables.”
Lisa laughed as her father groaned, and pleaded with the universe of why it was so cruel to him. At that moment the boys and the youngest girl decided to come running into the house. “Hey dad look at this huge spider, Melody found!” exclaimed his oldest son, Sean.
“Yeah, he’s humongous!!” shouted his youngest son, Greg.
“See he’s a big one!!”yelled Melody as the little girl held out her hand which indeed had a very large spider on it. Meg began to scream and Lisa fainted when the spider jumped off Melody’s hand onto the kitchen island counter. “Get that thing out of here, RIGHT NOW!!” screamed Meg. Miller quickly grabbed the slider and threw it outside.
“We’ve killed Lisa!” cried Melody. “I’m sorry Lisa, I didn’t mean to killed you!”
The mud cover 8 year old grabbed her sister’s hand and slapped her face trying to wake her up.
“Ugh, Melody, you have mud all of you,” said Lisa as she slowly woke up.
Meg glanced at her younger daughter and sighed, “I just don’t know what I am going to do with you, you’re such a tomboy. Oh well, it is what is. You three go wash up supper will be ready soon. She looked at John, and shrugged, while he laughed at the crazy antics of his children.
Sean, who was 11, and Greg, who was 5, tried to run back out the back door, being as adverse to water as a cats. They were stopped by their father, who gave them a stern look, barely able to hold back his laughter, and sent them to up the back stairs to go clean the mud off of them. As soon as they had reached the top of the stairs Miller let out a loud peal of laughter.
•~*~•
Later that evening, Miller and his wife sat on the porch and watched as their children chased each other around in the dark, laughing and screaming like kids do. He smiled and looked down at his beautiful wife.
She was smiling and watching as Greg ran laughing past them, she turn her head up to look on his eyes. “We are very lucky you know, to have such wonderful children,” she said. “And I am very lucky to be married to such a wonderful man who loves and takes care of us. I love you, John.”
He smiled and said, “No Meg, I’m luck that woman like you would love a man like me. I love you, Meg.” And he sealed it with a very sweet and happy kiss.
. . . Captain Miller woke up, it would soon be time to leave to go find this Ryan guy. All Captain John H. Miller knew was that the sooner he found this Ryan kid the sooner he got home to Meg, his wonderful, beautiful, loving wife and the kids, Lisa, who was quickly growing up into a beautiful young woman, Sean, who was a good, but mischievous young man, Melody, in bloom of young womanhood and leaving her tomboy days behind her, and little Greg who was the sweetest little boy who ever loved snakes, bugs and frogs.
Yes, Captain Milker would find Ryan, if it could get him back to those five people who loved him so. That was his desire.
