Chapter 1: Am I Just a Princess?

Prologue:

In a magical world full of mystery and secrets, at the center of the world was a quiet kingdom called Paris. The King and Queen of Paris lived in the beautiful palace at the heart of Paris. The King and Queen were Mr and Mrs Dupain-Cheng, they were a quiet royal family that cared for their town village and their people. The King and Queen were always blessed by the people because they were a family who cared about the safety and concern of their fellow individuals, they ruled with justice and love.

The King and Queen of Paris Tom Dupain and Sabine Cheng were blessed with a daughter. The Princess of Paris, Miss Marinette Dupain-Cheng. Marinette was born 20 years ago and had an incredible life, filled with adventure and fun. Marinette had a heart of gold; she was the voice of reason within the castle. She was the one who the public loved and adored. Marinette was always listening to the locals and the villagers and was always willing to see the good in people, just like her parents. However, some individuals took advantage of that kindness and blackmailed the royal family. The problems the kingdom faced have never been a problem for Marinette, she was always the happy royal member and she continued to show her kindness in tough times.

A couple of years ago, there was a great battle that took place outside the walls of Paris, the King and Queen had sent soldiers out to fight the war, the war against the gods. The kingdom of Paris feared the gods, they were a force to be reckoned with. People believed the gods were sent here to kill all of humanity, others said the gods were sent here to bring peace. While so many rumors were spreading across the kingdom, no one truly knew why the gods had come here. It scared everyone, including the King and Queen. Especially when there were many, their intentions were unclear and the way they were dressed brought fear.

A soldier had come across one of the gods during one of these ferocious battles and he had lived to tell the tale, he said that the man had a distinctive look, on his back lay a turtle-looking shell that looked so fierce that nothing could penetrate through his armor, he wielded a massive shield that could crush a man if he threw it into the air, He called himself Carapace. There were many gods that everyone feared but there was one god that the Kingdom feared the most, he was the most sought and the most well-known god, only a few individuals had ever seen the man up close, and those few who survived the encounter said that he wore nothing but a skin-tight black suit on him and his appearance looked like that of a cat with razor sharp claws and large cat looking ears, they called him Cat Noir.

Cat Noir was always seen with Carapace, wherever they went, destruction would follow. Cat Noir was known for destruction, the rumors that were spread said that he destroyed anything with a single touch, and it stoked fear in the hearts of the villagers, he has killed to protect his secret. No man that pissed Cat Noir off was said to come back without PTSD for the rest of their lives, he was no man that you could afford to cross with, if he was even a man, to begin with. To this day, the rumors circle the entire kingdom waiting for the answers to be spoken within the walls of Paris. Will they ever come to life? Unknownst to the people, the truth would come out and it would change the life of Marinette Dupain-Cheng, forever.

Present day:

Marinette Dupain-Cheng was seen riding on her horse Sophie through the forest behind her kingdom, she was known to be a free spirit. Her parents had given her the freedom she desired, if she stayed within the perimeter of the walls and made sure she came back to the palace before her curfew. Now that she was older, she had started to test the boundaries more, risking the outside boundaries and today, she chose to try it.

Marinette came to a stop just beyond the fence line of the forest and peered into the darkness on top of her horse. Sophie nickered at the darkness and tried to step back away from the dark, Marinette put her hand down beside Sophie’s neck and started to pat her.

“It's okay girl, we can do this. Just a quick little ride”

She urged Sophie to walk ahead and opened the gate that led into the dark forest, her parents had told her not to go past the fence line, but her curiosity got the best of her, and she wanted to explore beyond the safety of Paris, she wanted to see what was outside the walls.

Sophie got 5 steps into the darkness when she halted, a scream was heard in the distance and it spooked Sophie into running left, Marinette was holding onto Sophie's neck trying to get her to stop but she was in panic mode and wouldn't stop.

“Sophie woah girl, stop. SOPHIE! STOP NO!” Marinette’s foot started to slip from the stirrup, and she was clutching onto Sophie's neck for dear life, but her hands were starting to sweat, and she was about to fall forward as Sophie was galloping in panic.

Marinette felt something grab her and she started to scream as she was lifted into the tree line and watched in horror as Sophie kept going down the path, leaving her behind. Marinette was still screaming as she was lowered gently onto the ground, Marinette looked back up at the tree with a terrified gaze wondering what the hell had grabbed her, was it a rescuer? She tried to glance into the tree but could not see anything, it was too dark. She heard rustling and watched as a figure disappeared into the darkness. She looked back down the path where her horse had disappeared and looked back up the tree.

How the hell was she supposed to get out of the forest without her horse and who had saved her?

Just as she was about to have a mini panic attack, she heard whistling from a nearby tree and somehow, she felt drawn to the sound, so she walked down the path. She had her hands nervously out in front of her, dreading the pathway and wondering where Sophie had run off to and what the hell was that noise and why the hell, she was walking towards it, she was terrified. Just as she pulled a random tree branch out of the way that was in her path, she saw something green jump away into the tree line, and just ahead of her, Sophie was tied to a tree with an apple in her mouth like someone had fed her horse.

What the hell was going on...

Marinette slowly walked up to Sophie and gave her a pat and looked around worriedly.

“What the hell happened girl, who did you see?”

Sophie neighed in response and bumped her head into Marinette’s hand asking for scratches. Marinette started to chuckle and respond to her demands, she got back onto Sophie and started to walk away, back the way she came, she wanted to get out of the forest before anything else happened.

Unknownst to her, a different conversion was happening in the forest not far from where she was.

“That could have ended very badly and seriously what was that girl thinking, coming into the forbidden forest? She’s lucky we were here to rescue her and her horse. Man, are you even listening to me”

“She is so pretty”

“Dude, get your head out of the clouds, She's the princess. You know that you cannot fall for her if the master finds out...”

“He doesn’t have to know about this, I get it man, it's forbidden. I just wish things could be different. I want to fall in love with a girl who accepts me for me”

“We all want that man and one day we will. Come on, it’s getting late, we need to return home”

“Hey, Nino wait” The person in question who had just started to jump to the nearest tree turned around to look back.

“Dude, you know we can only call each other our god names while we're outside. What if someone was to hear us...Adrien”

Adrien smirked back at Nino “Oh so now you are calling me by my civilian name too huh? Now Carapace, you know that’s naughty”

“Hey, you’re the one who started it by calling me Nino, Cat Noir. Only returning the favor. But seriously we need to get back”

“Yeh you’re right, let’s go” Cat Noir said as he watched Carapace leap back over the tree they had come from earlier when they saw the damsel in distress get carried off with her horse. Cat Noir looked back to the pathway the girl had disappeared into and stared longingly at the empty space. If only his heart could handle the heartbreak. He could never fall in love with someone so breathtakingly beautiful. It was the price he had to endure for he could never love a Princess. He sighed sadly as he took after Carapace.

____________________________________________________________________________________

Carapace and Cat Noir leaped onto a hollow tree and opened a wooden leaver with a secret combination that only the gods knew. The wheel slowly started to open the hatch from inside the tree. They both walked inside and closed the hatch, grabbing one of the torchlights that was on the wall.

“I hope they haven't called the Cavalry”

Cat Noir glanced at Carapace from the corner of his eye “What do you mean?”

“Dude we are so late, they might have gotten worried”

Cat Noir sighed as he briefly looked ahead of him, making sure he was heading in the correct direction. The Master got worried way too often, he was always worried that the gods would be spotted and killed since the humans didn’t know about us. We chose not to reveal ourselves to the world because we were worried about what they would think of us. We chose to be gods, unknown to humans, the gods were merely nothing but humans. The humans had no idea that the little beings that turn us into gods were the little Kwami's.

Cat Noir’s Kwami is Plagg, the Kwami of Destruction while Carapace’s Kwami is called Wayzz, the Kwami of Protection. Just like Cat Noir and Carapace, Plagg and Wayzz were the best of friends. Plagg had been lonely since his other half was still stuck inside the miracle box. Tikki the Kwami of Creation hasn’t found a holder yet and Plagg does miss Tikki a lot.

Cat Noir and Carapace walked into an open cave filled to the brim with crystals. They looked around as all the other gods, who were in their civilian forms walked around, busying themselves with stuff they needed to do.

“Plagg, Claws in”

“Wayzz, Shell off”

Green light formed around the 2 men as their civilian forms came into view, Nino wore a long Medieval red coat fashion jacket with black pants. Adrien wore a Victorian Aristocrat Vest with white pants, both boys had swords strapped to their waists.

“Nice of you guys to finally come home” Adrien and Nino both looked in the direction of where the voice came from and up walked Kagami, also known as Ryuko. She was the holder of the Dragon Miraculous, her little god is Longg, the Kwami of Perfection. Adrien shrugged at Kagami, looking away from her.

“We had to deal with something which is why we were a little late”

“Oh, I wasn’t asking for my pleasure, the Master was looking for you Adrien” Adrien sighed as he scoffed and headed up the tree root that had been planted into the ground, there was a house floating in the air that led up to it, where the master lived.

“Good luck dude”

Adrien walked up the tree root and went through the glass door, as he stepped through Plagg came out of his pocket looking disgusted with his little paws covering his nose.

“Ewww it smells like something died in here, WHERE IS MY CHEESE!” Adrien rolled his eyes at his Kwami, choosing to flick the little god away “I will get your cheese soon, Master Su-Han wanted to speak with me”

“Adrien, there you are” Adrien jerked as he was surprised, he spun around in the direction of the voice and watched as the master came down from his ledge. He glanced behind him wondering what the master only wanted him for, as far as Adrien knew, he had done nothing wrong... yet.

“I wanted to speak with you about the Princess ball coming up being hosted at the King and Queen’s palace”

Adrien’s eyes sparkled with interest, he had overheard Rose gushing about it with Juleka, about how they wished they could go and dress up in ballroom gowns. Adrien wanted to know why Su-Han was talking to him about it.

“Uh, the Princess ball. What about it?”

“The King and Queen are celebrating their daughter's coming of age and the kingdom is celebrating by hosting the ball for her. It’s a chance for her to get acquainted with suiters who wish for her hand in marriage or for her to be courted”

Adrien was gobsmacked; he knew palace traditions were awful but the way that had come out sounded disgusting. No one deserved to be treated like that, having to face an entire room full of people who were only eyeing you because you were the main star attraction of the show. The Princess deserved better than a bunch of rich kids standing around gawking at her and hoping for a chance to snatch her away. Adrien would never see the Princess like that.

“What's this got to do with me? I thought you wanted us to stay away from the royals”

Master Su-Han walked away looking back out the window as he continued “I want you to go and keep a watchful eye on them, make sure the royals are not up to something else. For all we know it could be a plot or something far more sinister. We cannot allow any of the gods to be hurt or worse, killed. For your own protection, I want you to take Nino with you, just in case things go bad”

Adrien watched as Master Su-Han came back towards him and he put his hand on Adrien's shoulder.

“You need to be careful. I fear the royals are getting close to breaking. I don’t want you on the receiving end of this war, I don’t want you to carry this burden”

Adrien growled at Master Su-Han and yanked his hand away from him “If you had let me fight in the last battle, we never would have lost Master Fu! You never trust me anymore... I am literally the most powerful person here and you keep me caged up for your own purpose. I am just your scouting or errand boy, Master Fu never would have treated me like this!”

Master Su-Han ignored Adrien's growling and sent him a strict look “Enough Adrien, we will discuss this later, right now I need you to prepare for this Princess Ball, it is in 2 days. It will give you enough time to scoop the place out until then, but I do not want you to be seen, you must stay in the shadows and under the cover of night. Do I make myself clear?”

“Yes sir” Adrien had to grind his teeth as he said those words, he just wanted to get away from him, he hated this master. He was the worst one ever, Master Fu was such a wise old man beyond his years, Adrien was devasted when they told him he had died while in the battle, a battle that he didn’t get to join because Su-Han sent him out on a useless quest. Adrien would never forgive Su-Han for what he did.

“Good you are dismissed” Adrien quickly left the horrible house and breathed the fresh air, it smelt horrid in there, death and his BO. Disgusting. Adrien made his way down the tree root and walked down the path, stopping just outside an old brick house, he went inside and opened the door. He found Nino in there lounging, eating some salmon while Wayzz was chilling on the table where there were teacups and some biscuits spread out on the table. Plagg groaned while floating over to the tabletop and looked at all the food, but there was something missing...

“CHEESE? Where is my cheese!” At that moment Nino burped from the couch and gave a guilty look.

“Sorry Plagg, but a guy has to eat” Plagg looked mortified while he stared at Nino “YOU ATE MY CHEESE? you owe me more cheese!”

Adrien walked over to the fridge and found some camembert for Plagg. He held out the cheese to his Kwami. “Here is your disgusting cheese”

Plagg turned around and his grin got wider as he stared at the cheese, his eyes narrowing to silts” You are the best holder ever”

Adrien scoffed “You say that to every holder that gives you cheese”

“So, what did Su-Han want you for?” Nino casually asked while still lying down on the couch.

“He wants us to stake out the Princess ball at the palace to make sure nothing goes wrong”

“Princess ball as in Princess Marinette, the girl we saved earlier in the forest. The one you have a crush on?” Nino teased Adrien throwing in a seductive little smirk.

Adrien adverted his eyes from Nino and stared at the floor “You know as well as I do Nino that It will never happen, I shouldn't think about things that will never happen, I end up being disappointed”

“I get it dude. I wish I could fall in love too. It sucks”

“Su-Han wants me to spend the next few nights scouting out the palace before the Princess ball, I’ll head out when it's dark”

_____________________________________________________________________________________

Over the next few days, Cat Noir went out of the safety of the forbidden forest and went to the palace to stake it out and watch if anything was corrupt, luckily nothing unordinary had been seen. The last thing Cat wanted was for something to happen that he had no control over. Master Su-Han did have the right intentions but to force Cat Noir into being his errand boy had hurt him, he was the most powerful of them all and Su-Han treated him like a baby on a leash.

Just as Cat Noir was about to leave from his tree perch on the palace's back rail, near where the gardens were, he heard a noise. Cat’s razor-sharp night vision picked up 2 figures walking down the pathway, coming right at him. He gasped in panic jumping back over the railing to the other side and hid behind a pole as the 2 figures passed.

Cat Noir’s sharp hearing was able to pick up some of the conversation that they were having.

“Do you think it could have been the gods?”

“Who else would be out in the middle of the forbidden forest Alya, it had to be one of them or multiple”

“All this time we have been thinking they are here to kill us, but you were saved by them. Wonder what else they are hiding”

Cat Noir was intrigued about the conversation, especially since it involved them. He needed to get back to the base and talk with Su-Han and the other gods about this, they were not going to be happy with this. Cat quickly jumped away into the forest line and disappeared into the darkness.

Marinette had been quite skittish the last few days ever since the incident that occurred to her and Sophie. She had not told her parents about the encounter, the only person she told was her best friend Alya, and she shared everything with her. Marinette couldn't keep a secret from her, especially not a big secret like this. Another thing she had to worry about was her parents...

Marinette's parents had told her a week ago that they planned on giving her a Princess Ball in her honor of finding a future husband or suitor, she was disgusted at her parents for making her do this. She didn’t want to be tied down to a man, she was her own woman. Marinette argued with her parents about the topic of the Princess ball every day. She didn’t want it, she hated it.

FLASHBACK:

“Please I beg of you... I don’t want this stupid Princess Ball; I HATE THE IDEA! I don’t want a man in my life who will treat me like a piece of candy, all this guy would want from me is to be a pretty ornament and to be a housewife slave and bare this man's children! It's not the life I want Papa, I want to be free!”

“Marinette, we have given you the freedom you have wanted for the past 5 years, we would have betrothed you to a suitor when you had turned the appropriate age of 15 but you and your mother insisted on waiting. Now is the time to settle down”

Marinette was sick, she could not believe her parents were forcing this upon her. “This is my life! Am I more than just a Princess? Yes, I am. I'm a human being. Mumma please!”

Marinette's mother sighed and gave her a small smile “I was 16 when I was betrothed to your father, we were married when we were 20. We have given you your freedom and now we need you to finally settle with the right man, we want you to be happy”

“I will never love a man that treats me like garbage which is what's going to happen!”

“We will make sure this man will be worthy of you sweetheart, don’t worry” Marinette's parents had put an end to the conversation just like that, she would not be able to get out of this and it would haunt her for the rest of her life. Marinette wanted to run away and never come back, her parents were always so supportive and now suddenly they wanted her to be betrothed or married. It didn’t make sense. As much as it pained Marinette, she had to do what her parents asked of her, she was their daughter.

Marinette’s awful night came upon her too fast. Alya was helping her pick out a dress, she was tempted to pick the most horrible-looking dress just so the suitors would be disgusted with her, unfortunately, her mother told her off and she scraped that idea so far down the hole.

“Hmm, what do you think pink or blue?”

“Well, if you want to impress a boy, I think we need a blue dress to pop out your sky-blue color. We need to make you shine girl”

Marinette sighed as she sat down on her bed, she crossed her arms around her while trying not to cry

“I don’t want this Alya, my parents don’t understand the pain. I don’t want to marry. I just want to be an ordinary girl with a normal life”

Alya sat down beside her best friend and put a hand on her shoulder, trying to comfort her “Girl, I’m sorry but that ship sailed a long time ago, the day you were born”

“I just want to meet somebody who would love me for me, not because I’m the princess, but me as Marinette. That’s all I’ve ever wanted”

“Maybe... just maybe, the boys down there aren't a bunch of stuck-up brats, and they could be decent”

Marinette glanced back up to look Alya in the eye and gave her a small smile

“You always find the right words Alya, I’m so thankful to have a best friend like you. BFFS forever, right?”

Marinette stuck her hand out towards Alya's hand and watched as she smiled and returned her fist bump

“BFF’s forever girl. Now let's spruce you up. The men won't be able to look away” Marinette was going to enjoy tonight, whatever happened, she was going to give that man hell.
