Work Text:
It’s 7am in the morning.
Aubrey wanted to check on her boyfriends because they were sleeping in a separate room. Or at least she thought so. It’s strange that Basil and Sunny said they were sleeping… and yet they looked like they haven’t had their sleep yesterday.
Then, she knocked. She could hear the responses, but they were unintelligible. She could not make out the words. The speech just sounded like a slurry of misspelled words. Well, what could she do now? The door might be locked-
It wasn’t. She heard the door creak open when she pulled on the handle, and she decided she might just as well as enter their room.
Aubrey saw the scene in front of her. It was full of books laid around the bed. Several of them opened and left on unread. Holy shit… is this what they’ve been doing this whole time?
Her boyfriends were laying down looking tired, eye bags over their faces. Why didn’t they just tell her? Did they not trust her? What mattered the most to her however, is that this is especially bad. They’re doing this in. The. Middle. Of. Summer. Break.
“Wow. You two are total workaholics. When are you ever going to take a break?” She had to be frank with them. Especially when what they were doing right now could cause their health to deteriorate… and she’s afraid of that. The trio longed for each other, and they wanted each other to live as long as possible.
“…I don’t know…” Sunny had his head clouded and unable to come up with a response. His eyes quarter-open despite the morning light inviting him to fully open his eyes.
“We’re still studying Aub… hnggggg…” Basil yawned and whined while on the bed with his boyfriend. He looked like he was about to close his eyes and fall into sleep.
“Dorks, it’s summer break, not exam season.” She chuckled and noogied her boyfriends to fully awake them up. But also she just really liked noogies on their head. Particular antics for such a precise relationship. This combination of people looked like a shitshow at first but eventually they were able to put aside their differences and hurt for each other.
“Aubrey can we study one more book? Please? Pretty pleaaaaase?” Basil begged her.
“…yeah I need more time… on this book…” Sunny responded almost dead silent.
“I’m just concerned that you both aren’t helping yourself enough. Look. Just, you two. Go outside. With me. Tomorrow.” She wasn’t having any of their shit. She loved them and to see them just accepting their lives into studying for the sake of it… rubbed her the wrong way.
It’s not like they weren’t smart. It’s the self-esteem issues holding them back, not the lack of reading books and reviewing over the contents of a dozen papers. She just wanted to point out to her boyfriends how ironically stupid of them to go through with this.
“I’m just saying. It’s only been 4 days into the summer break but I don’t want you two to waste anymore of it.” She wagged her fingers to show her seriousness.
They still refused to get out of bed and clean up this book covered mess that they call a bed. There was very minor movement. She could hear the noises of rejection to her plea.
The constant refusal was getting to her, but she always had patience with them. She vowed to not ever be angry at them again. That would turn into the lake incident. She still had nightmares about it.
“Fine, stay there. But you guys could treat yourself to enjoying life you know? To celebrate your grades and exams or something. I’m not saying you both have to not pick up a plant fact or a math fact for the whole summer break.”
She frowned just a bit but pressed on. “But just. Please. Listen to me. I don’t want to be a dick.” Aubrey had to make her voice stern and louder because if her voice was still soft they were not listening anytime soon.
They finally gave up and caved into Aubrey’s pleas. Before they got up though, Sunny kissed Basil. “You too Sunny.” He kissed back on Sunny’s cheek. The boys were flustered, but not for long.
“Damn, that’s kind of cute.” Aubrey snapped out of her serious stance and commented on the kisses while being red-faced herself. “This is better than watching couples kiss on the television.” She exaggerated the accent of her words. It was clear to Basil that she was teasing him.
“A-AUBREY!” Basil squeaked out with a voice far higher and girlier than they expected. Poor guy looked like his face turned into the colors of inside a watermelon. Sunny and Aubrey laughed at him. It was that easy to fuck with him. They do it all the time. Many photos of him were taken of his flamboyant or sometimes outright goofy expressions.
However, after laughing, Sunny realized what she meant too and buried his face in his hands. Basil chuckled and pointed at him back as payback. Ouch. Ow. It was undeniable that his face adorned a blush with the color of an apple’s skin. He definitely liked his boyfriend and his girlfriend’s teasing though. It was fun to act like a little shit sometimes.
Sunny and Basil decided to snap out of their mind and decided to clean everything up. Basil made the bed, arranged back the pillows and plushies. Sunny collected all the books, closed them and stored them on a table.
Once her boyfriends were done with cleaning everything up, the pink-haired girl pulled them in an embrace, and allowing herself to be kissed. “Your reward for getting the fuck out of bed, sweeties.” Mocking them with a smug aura. She pointed to her cheeks while smiling.
They both kissed her all at once, each cheek getting the treatment of her soulmates’ lips, providing a rush of sweet satisfaction from their kisses. They were gentle and long with the kisses. She cracked a grin at that and to complete the cycle, kissed both boys’ heads.
“How did that feel, boys?” She could faintly hear “thank you” in their quiet voices after asking them the question. There was one more thing she wanted them to do today before getting them to go outside tomorrow for some summer fun.
She led them to the living room to cuddle before they all get their breakfast from Polly. They were sticking together with each other like glue, pretty much showing their affection to each other and healing each other. The trio talked about stuff going on with their lives.
Basil talked about nerdy plant facts, Sunny being good at math (Sunny blushed at that) and how he helped people at the library. Aubrey talked about rebuilding the Hooligans’ image – and inviting them into the group (The boys were ecstatic about that). Sunny? He just wanted to hear them talk, but also he wanted to talk himself. He talked about being a visual artist and picking up the violin despite everything that has happened. (They supported him.)
She ran her hands through the fluffy hair of Basil’s. (Him having grew it out a bit. Her and Sunny seemed to be particularly in love with the added length of his beautiful blonde hair and the ponytail he tied when he went out in public. Sometimes he looked like a girl but they didn’t care.)
...And the long combed hair of Sunny’s. (he decided to grow his hair himself, and holy shit did he look pretty in that. Basil and her were all over it. However, he had to keep it shoulder length as to not look too much like Mari for personal reasons. Can't have a remainder of your bad days right in the mirror.)
She also thought about dyeing their hair, but that’s for later. Pink for Basil, purple for Sunny, and bluish purple on top of the pink she already had. Maybe in the future. Just random thoughts.
Her boyfriends seemed to enjoy her company around them. She’s glad that her life went this way. She would’ve been still angry at herself if they had died that one week. Aubrey felt lucky to have them by her side.
Polly walked over and saw the three lovers cuddling and talking to each other on the sofa. She decided to leave the food at the table.
“Here’s your breakfast for today.” She told Aubrey, as the boys seemed to be lost in their own world. She decided to snap up a photo without Basil or Sunny’s say. Aubrey gave her the okay with her hand.
“Do you need anything else?” Polly asked one last question before leaving for some duties.
“No, we don't Miss Polly. We’ll catch up to the breakfast later. Just gotta take care of these little guys.”
“Understandable.” Polly gave her the photo and went around doing her usual chores.
Meanwhile... the sunlight crept over them on the couch, the trio basking in the comfort of being on a sofa together.
