Chapter 1: That Love is Like a Star
Chapter Text
“Seriously, I need a job. Anything. I will take anything.”
Vi sat in that cold, too empty office, listening to the career counselor talking on and on about how hard it was going to be to get a job and that she’s really out of options this time. Nothing she hadn’t heard before.
“I’m gonna be brutally honest with you here, Vi. Given your track record your options are going to be extremely limited.” He rambled on about why she was such a screw up.
“I mean you beat up a guy in broad daylight. In front of his child.” He said sympathetically. His tone was a bit off though. A bit manipulative. She sighed.
That was a big mistake. She admitted it. But she was especially on edge that day and from her point of view, it looked like he was trying to kidnap the boy.
The problem was, things like this kept happening. It’s like she was cursed. Every job she worked, something would go wrong. She could probably manage to screw up even the easiest of jobs.
This was really her last chance. At getting a job, at being able to pay the bills.
At keeping custody of Powder.
“Please. There has to be something, right?” she asked, defeated.
“I don’t know, Vi La-” he looked at her file for a long moment. A big too long. “Actually, there is one job. Security gig,” he said.
Vi was a bit confused at why he seemed to know her. “How’s the pay?” she asked, not entirely sold. It seemed a little sketchy.
“Not great. But, the hours are worse,” he told her.
She sighed. She knew this was too good to be true.
“I can’t work nights,” she said, a bit disappointed.
“Well, Give me a call if you change your mind. Here, take my card.”
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
“Look at my niece. She can barely stay awake! This degenerate is hardly the kind of person who should be taking care of a mentally ill child,” Vi’s aunt accused.
They had been having these meetings for a few weeks now. Nothing had come of it yet, but now her aunt had a lawyer. Vi wondered how long she would hold off getting the authorities involved.
“Powder isn’t mentally ill,” the school counselor tried to explain.
“Oh, yes, because drawing all the time and never talking to anyone is perfectly normal,” her aunt said.
Vi tensed. She didn’t like people talking about Powder like that.
“Please, Vi. Reconsider. If I take this to court, you risk never seeing your sister again. I mean, what judge would side with you?” She said finally before standing up and leaving.
Vi sighed.
“Do you have a plan?” the school guidance counselor finally said after a few minutes of uncomfortable silence.
“No. My aunt is horrible, but she’s right. No judge in their right mind is going to side with me. Maybe she would be better off without me,” she said the last bit a bit quieter.
“I mean, she talks to air more than she talks to me,” she added. It was true. Powder didn’t seem to want to interact much these days. Not with her, not with anyone, really.
“Pictures tell so much about people. Before we learn how to speak, they are our only tool of communication. Powder’s drawings tell stories,” The guidance counselor told her.
“Yeah, I mean, they definitely mean something,” Vi agreed.
“And who’s at the center of nine out of ten of them?” Vi didn’t say anything in response, but she knew she was right.
“Like it or not, You’re her world, Vi. Do you have a job yet?” she asked.
Vi shook her head.
“Maybe start there.”
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
“Hey, Powpow, how was school?” Vi asked her younger sister who was sitting in the back seat, doodling in her sketchbook as if the rest of the world didn’t exist.
She didn’t respond, instead preferring to look out the window at the trees going by. She didn’t talk much.
“Earth to Powder,” she said jokingly.
“What? Oh, school was ok. I made a new friend,” Powder said.
Vi raised an eyebrow.
“Really? A new friend, that’s great, Powder. What’s their name?” she told her. But, she didn’t buy it. Powder never made any friends.
“Their name is… well they don’t actually go to the school, but they’re still my friend,” Powder defended. “They are my friends, really.”
“Your friends who you’re ‘talking to’ when you speak to the wall?” Vi questioned. Powder didn’t reply.
“Powder, I say this out of love, but I think you should make some real friends.” Vi told her younger sister who probably wasn’t even listening.
“They are my real friends, Vi! You wouldn’t understand friends. You don’t have any!” Powder argued, almost yelling.
Vi sighed. She didn’t want to argue about this any further. She decided to just turn on the radio and switch the subject.
“Did you do any new drawings today? Build anything cool, maybe?” she asked. Powder might not like talking about her non-existent friends, but she did like talking about her weird creations.
“Yeah! This one is called whiskers. I think it will really work this time Vi!” she said happily.
“I’m sure it will, Powder,” she agreed.
Vi didn’t know why her eight year old sister was so interested in making bombs that didn’t work out of her legos, but it was a hobby, so she didn’t mind too much.
“Max isn’t babysitting me today, right?” Powder asked hopefully.
“I think she is,” Vi said.
Powder groaned.
“Please stay! She’s so boring. She never listens to me or watches anything good or draws with me or anything!” Powder complained.
“Yeah, well, she’ll work for free until I get the money to actually pay her, so could you deal with it? At least for now?” Vi tried to get Powder to agree.
“Yes. I’ll deal with her. But she’s not as cool as you,” Powder agreed sadly.
“You think I’m cool?” Vi asked, half joking.
“Of course you’re cool, Vi. You’re my cool older sister who lets me watch r-rated movies and eat frozen pizza whenever I want,” Powder told her, laughing and smiling for once.
“Oh, so that’s why I’m cool? Not because I’m smart and strong and awesome” Vi asked, fake accusing.
“Oh, that too, I guess,” she said, still smiling.
Vi liked seeing her sister like this.
Finally, their car pulled into the driveway.
“Do you want pizza or pasta for dinner?” Vi asked.
“I don’t care,” Powder said, getting her backpack out of the car, taking extra care with her 100 set crayons. She was proud of those. Especially the eraser in the back. Powder thought that was the coolest thing ever.
“Come on, it’s not a hard choice,” Vi said.
“Could I have mac and cheese?” Powder asked.
“We only have the off brand kind. Is that ok?” Vi asked. Powder nodded in approval.
“Good. I’ll start making dinner.” She said, hoping to get more than a one word response but not expecting one.
“Ok,” Powder said before walking into their room, crayons and sketch book in hand. She would probably be locked in there all night. Then she would have dinner, and then she would lock herself in her room again.
That was their routine
Vi started boiling some water on the stove and getting out one of their many boxes of off brand mac and cheese.
She eyed the phone, wondering if she should take up her career counselor on his offer.
She made sure their dinner wasn’t about to burn, dialed the number on the business card she was given that morning, and waited as the phone rang.
“Hey, um, this is Vi lanes. I was wondering if that job was still available?”

Chapter Text
“Vi, could you watch your sister for a bit while I finish cooking the burgers?” Vander asked, his eyes on the grill.
The air was finally getting hot and summer had just begun. Twelve year old Vi Lanes heard the green leaves blowing in the wind. She loved it when the weather was like this. It was finally bike riding and swimming season. Finally time to spray her siblings with the hose and eat popsicles. She wished it could just stay like this forever.
But all good things must come to an end.
Vi nodded.
“Of course!” she smiled. She never minded watching her baby sister, even if it was a bit tedious.
Her younger brother seemed to have lost his frisbee and was now starting to look for it.
“Mylo, don’t run off!” Vander yelled at the younger boy. He didn’t seem to listen. He had always been particularly bad at doing that.
“Powder, stay here while I go get that idiot,” Vi said under her breath.
“Mylo! Get back here! Lunch is almost ready!” she yelled. This time there was no answer.
“Mylo?” she yelled, seemingly at no one.
She started running now, scared she had lost him.
“Mylo Lanes get back here before I punch you in the face!” She was almost screaming now, hoping that he was just playing a prank on her. He liked to do that, after all.
Yeah, that was it.
He was hiding somewhere in this too big, too dark, too thick forest. In a few moments, he would come out from the bushes and laugh at her for being actually worried.
Then she saw a car drive away.
She saw her little brother in the backseat, holding that damn frisbee.
Her stupid brother who never listened.
“Mylo!” she screamed at the car. “Mylo, get out of there! Please!” she continued to yell.
“I’m sorry I made fun of the show you like so much, It’s not stupid I swear!” she yelled at the car.
But it was no use. He couldn’t hear her.
He was gone.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
Vi woke up from her dream.
That dream.
She rubbed her eyelids a bit, adjusting to her surroundings. She was in the security room at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. It was some weird pizza restaurant with animatronic performers. It was popular in the 80’s, apparently.
It creeped her the hell out, to be honest. The atmosphere, the way everything was unnaturally cold, the back rooms that she wasn’t allowed to go in.
Everything about it made her nervous. Especially those weird robots. There was something about them that made her nervous, besides the obvious fact that they were giant scary singing robots.
But a job was a job. Even a crappy night shift job that meant she had to hire a babysitter for longer than usual.
She almost fell asleep again before her heart jumped as she heard the doorbell ring.
She checked the cameras. It looked like a police officer was at the door.
Weird, she thought .
She walked through the pizzeria to get to the front door.
“Hi. Are you the new Night shift guard?” the girl at the door asked. She was a bit taller than Vi, with long navy hair. She was kinda pretty.
“Uh, yeah. And you are?” she asked.
“Officer Caitlyn Kiramman,” the police officer, well, Caitlyn, said.
“Vi Lanes. Uh, you can come in if you want,” she told her awkwardly.
Caitlyn took her up on her offer, putting down her raincoat on the bench near the front door. She seemed to know her way around the place.
“Vi. Is that a nickname?” Caitlyn asked as she walked around the hallway, seeming to take it all in.
“Stands for violence,” Vi said sarcastically. Caitlyn seemed to ignore her.
“So, how’s the job so far?” Caitlyn asked.
“It’s fine.” Vi replied a bit curtly.
“Yeah. By the way, I think you’ll be gone in about two weeks, give or take,” Caitlyn said, laughing a bit.
Vi was a bit offended.
“What are you talking about?” she asked.
“You security hires? You never last. This place, it gets to you. Messes with your head. I bet you’ll be out of here in a few days. But hey, what do I know? Maybe it has great benefits. So, you tell me. Is this the kind of place you could see yourself working in ten years?” she asked, smiling slightly.
Vi didn’t say anything.
“Yeah, I didn’t think so,” Caitlyn said.
“So, Caitlyn Kiramman, what are you doing here anyways?” Vi asked.
“I always come here when they hire new security guards. I used to come here a lot, as a kid. It was my favorite restaurant. You know, until… actually, forget about it. I’m just working the night shift and I’m bored,” Caitlyn told her, unusually aggressive.
“Well, this isn’t the place I would come to if I was bored, but each to their own I guess,” she said, laughing a bit. She didn’t totally hate Caitlyn. It was better hanging out with a weird cop than being alone.
Caitlyn’s face seemed to light up with an idea.
“Have you met them yet?” she asked.
“Met… who?” Vi questioned.
“Freddy, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy,” Caitlyn said like she was talking about something she just loved.
“No, I don’t think we’ve met,” Vi said, laughing awkwardly.
Caitlyn started walking out to the main pizzeria.
“Prepare to have your mind blown!” she called out as she walked to press a big red button on the wall.
Those weird robots on the stage started moving and singing. The lights were flashing and Cailtyn looked like she was having the time of her life.
“So?” she asked.
Vi looked back at her a bit strangely.
“It’s something,” she said, secretly having some fun.
“Wanna dance?” Caitlyn asked, reaching her hand out. Vi smiled and almost took it before everything shut down and the power went out.
Caitlyn looked back at her, a bit disappointed that they didn’t get to finish the show.
“I should probably go,” Caitlyn told her.
Vi frowned a bit. She was strangely happy to be around this girl. She was very strange, but she liked her.
“Hey, just some advice?” Caitlyn said as she walked out the front door.
“Yeah?” Vi replied.
“Don’t let this place get to you. Just do your job and everything will be fine,” she said before walking to her car and driving away.
Vi watched her car pull out of the driveway for a few moments, thinking about this very weird yet fun interaction.
She started to make her way across the main hall. Before she knew it, she was back in the security room sleeping on the job again.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
Vi walked up the sidewalk to her front door exhausted, as always.
Her new job meant that she usually got home at about 6:30 am. It also meant that her sleep schedule was completely fucked.
“Hey, Max. Thanks again for this,” she said to Powder’s babysitter who was laying half asleep on the couch.
“No problem,” Max told her. “I’ll go ahead and head out,”
“By the way, did Powder eat dinner?” she asked.
“What do you think?” Max told her under her breath.
Vi sighed. When she was around someone that she didn’t entirely trust, Powder completely shut down. She spent more time in her room than usual, which was saying something.
“Bye Max. Tomorrow night at the same time?” she asked.
“Tomorrow night at the same time!” Max called out before leaving.
“Hey, Powder? Are you awake?” she knocked on her younger sister’s door.
“Yes, I’m awake,” Powder called from the other room.
Vi opened the door to see Powder at her desk, glued to her sketchbook.
“What are you drawing this time?” Vi asked, smiling.
“I’m drawing my friends and I. And you. You’re there too. See? That’s you in the middle. You’re helping us climb a tree,” Powder said, pointing to the figures in her drawings.
“Ah, so you and your friends like climbing trees?” Vi asked.
“Of course we do! It’s fun,” she said as if it was the most obvious thing ever.
“Have you ever once climbed a tree?” Vi questioned.
“No. But I’ve imagined it and it’s very fun in my head,” Powder responded, eyes still focused on the page.
Vi laughed. Leave it to Powder to pretend to climb a tree.
Then she heard a knock at the door.
“I’ll be right back, ok?” she said. Powder followed her anyways.
“Oh. Hi,” Vi said. It was Caitlyn at the door.
“Hi. You didn’t say you had a daughter?” Caitlyn said, looking at Powder.
“Gross..” Powder said quietly.
“Oh, no. This is my little sister, Powder,” Vi clarified.
“Well, you didn’t say you had a sister, either,” Caitlyn agreed.
“Are you here to arrest Vi?” Powder asked.
Vi shot her a look and Caitlyn rolled her eyes, obviously amused at her younger sister’s antics.
“Hey, Powpow, can you stay inside for a sec? I think me and Caitlyn should talk. Boring adult stuff, you wouldn’t like it,” Vi said.
Powder looked disappointed but she went back to her room.
“Walk with me,” Cailtyn said.
The pair started walking towards the creek near Vi’s house.
“Somebody broke into Freddy’s last night,”
“Seriously?” she said.
“I also found these at Freddy’s last night,” Caitlyn said while holding up an orange pill bottle.
“I can explain, those aren’t what you think they are-” she tried to explain herself but Caitlyn cut her off.
“I know what they are, Vi. It’s written on the bottle,” she said, obviously a bit angry at her. “News flash, if you’re too drugged up to remember how to lock up at night, you’re liable,”
“They’re just melatonin pills!” she defended.
“Same difference. The moment I file this report, it’s out of my hands. So, care to explain what’s going on?” Caitlyn asked.
“I just… Ok. Fine. I’ll tell you. When I was twelve, my brother went missing while we were camping. There’s this theory that we never really forget things, they’re just stored in the back of our minds. So every night I go back to that moment in my dreams. I keep thinking that maybe I’ll remember who took him. the more I try, the more I think that just maybe…” she couldn't seem to finish her sentence.
“You think that maybe you could change what happened?” Caitlyn asked, speaking softer now.
“Yeah. I guess so,” Vi agreed. “I know that this all probably seems crazy.”
“Vi, I’ve seen crazy. This isn’t it. Look, I know you mean well, but while you’re working, stay alert. I won’t file a report today,” she said.
“Thanks. Oh, and, by the way, it’s Violet,” Vi said.
“What?” Caitlyn asked.
“A few days ago you asked me what my real name was. I joked around and said that Vi stood for Violence. It stands for Violet,” she told her.
“That’s a pretty name. Unfortunately, I don’t have any cool secret name,” Caitlyn laughed.
Vi liked her laugh.
“Go back to that sister of yours. She’s funny, by the way. I hope I’ll see more of her. Enjoy your saturday. And please, Please, take more care at work. I’ll see you later,” she said before getting up and leaving, not seeming to care if Vi followed.
Notes:
I know it's moving way too fast, lol, it will slow down a bit later. I hope you won't get sick of flashbacks, cuz there will be more of them. I love Caitlyn and Vi. Can't wait to make them hate each other because of betrayal :) My favorite activity! I hope you liked this chapter, I'll probably post a new one soon.
Chapter 3: Oh, I'm just a kid (I never use my brain)
Chapter Text
Vi still hadn’t gotten a call from Max. She was supposed to call three hours ago and she was supposed to show up one hour ago.
At this point, she didn’t expect to hear from her.
Which meant she had two options:
Ditch work and stay home, possibly costing her job, or taking Powder to work with her.
The old abandoned restaurant wasn’t a place for an eight year old girl, but if she didn’t bring her, the consequences could be worse than if she did.
“Hey Powder, you know my new job?’ Vi asked at lunch. On the menu today was cheese pizza, always a favorite in their house.
“Yeah?” Powder responded, a little confused.
“How would you like to come with me tonight?” she asked. Powder’s eyes immediately lit up with excitement.
“Really?” she asked, hoping it to be true.
Vi nodded.
“I haven’t heard from Max all day and I can’t risk losing my job, so I don’t really have a choice on this,” Vi said. “But you will not leave my office under any circumstances. While we’re there, you’re going to sleep and do nothing else. Maybe I’ll let you draw if you can’t sleep. Maybe,” Vi said sternly. She needed Powder to understand how serious this was.
Powder nodded excitedly.
“Thank you Vi!” Powder exclaimed, giving her older sister a big hug.
Vi couldn’t help but smile.
“Seriously, Powder. We can’t mess this up. I’ve already messed things up too much lately,” Vi said, looking her sister in the eyes.
“Yeah, I know,” Powder said. “Can I wear your vest?”
“No. It’s my vest,” Vi said, amused.
“Please? How will anyone even know? Nobody is there when you’re there, that’s like the whole point,” she argued.
“Fine, Powder, will you promise to go right to sleep if I let you wear my vest?” Vi gave in.
“Yes, absolutely I will!!” she agreed.
“Alright then. You’ll come with me tonight but you won’t do anything but sleep in my office,”
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
The drive to work was uneventful. Powder was unusually quiet, probably because it was 11:00 pm and she was tired.
There was nothing good to sleep on, so Vi had to make something out of the few pillows, chairs, and blankets she had at her disposal.
Vi looked proudly at the small fort she made her sister out of chairs and blankets.
“Is this good enough to sleep in?” she asked.
Powder looked over it for a few seconds before nodding.
“It’s great,” she said, approving of the arrangement.
“Alright,” she said as the younger girl tucked herself into her blankets, clutching her stuffed animals.
“It’s kinda like camping,” she said, yawning.
“Yeah, a little bit I guess. Goodnight Powder,” she said, leaning down to make sure her sister actually fell asleep.
Once she was pretty sure Powder was out for the night, she decided to sleep herself, ignoring Caityn’s warning that, looking back, was really a threat.
She sat back in her chair, relaxed, and closed her eyes.
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
She saw her little brother in the backseat, holding that damn frisbee.
Her stupid brother who never listened.
“Mylo!” she screamed at the car. “Mylo, get out of there! Please!”
She wasn’t that young, stupid, twelve year-old Vi anymore, now she was 20 year-old again Vi who, for some strange reason, was still pleading with the universe to change her brother’s fate.
She looked behind her, seeing five children standing before her.
They were very solemn. They even looked a little bit scared of her.
“Do you know who was driving that car?” she asked them. None of them said anything, they just continued staring.
“Please, he took my brother. Do you know who took him?” she asked, trying to be patient. They just stared at her again.
“Who took him!” she yelled, fed up.
They all started running away from her in different directions.
“Wait, no, I’m sorry! Please just tell me who took him!” she was close to tears at this point. She didn’t mean to scare them. She just wanted to know.
No.
She had to know. She couldn’t go on like this, this wondering.
She ran after them more, trying to see if maybe they would tell her. Maybe they would give her some much needed closure.
“Please!”
.·:*¨༺ ༻¨*:·.
She woke up to the all too familiar sounds of screaming.
“Powder?” she said, almost yelling. She looked under the fort and she wasn’t there like she should’ve been. She wasn’t even in the office at all.
Vi immediately pushed the door into the main hall open, running.
There was still screaming she could hear, coming from somewhere. It was definitely Powder.
God, if anything happened to Powder she would never forgive herself.
She wasn’t ready for what she found in the main area.
She found Powder, surrounded by those creepy animatronics.
They seemed to be moving on their own, as if someone was controlling them.
She picked up a chair, hoping it would be enough to get them away from her.
Her loud, shrill screams turned into laughter as she moved away from the animatronics.
“Vi, they wouldn’t stop tickling me, I thought I was going to die!” she exclaimed, still laughing. “Vi, this is Bonnie, Foxy, Chica, and Freddy. Guys, this is my sister Vi!”
“Haha, very funny,” she said, hoping this was an elaborate prank. “You can come out now!”
Powder looked at her a bit strangely before going back to playing with the animatronics.
One of the animatronics seemed to look her up and down before apparently deciding that she was harmless.
She slowly put down the chair as a sign of defeat, hoping that they shouldn’t hurt her or Powder.
Before she could continue with this strange and scary interaction, there was a knock at the door. It was aggressive but dignified. She recognized it.
“Caitlyn, what are you doing here again?” she asked.
“I’m just making sure you’re not sleeping on the job again. Which, it seems like you aren’t, so that’s good,” she said before noticing Powder and the animatronics in the background.
“Caitlyn!” Powder exclaimed, running over to her.
“Hi, Powder, nice to see you,” Caitlyn said, not nearly as scared as Vi was when she saw those huge robots around her sister. In fact, she acted like this was just any other wednesday, as if this happened to her all the time.
“Caitlyn, you can hang out with my friends! We were about to show Vi our plans. Maybe you could help!” she said happily while she led Caitlyn over to where the animatronics were.
“Alright, so, do you guys think you could help us build this?” Powder asked Vi and Caitlyn, showing her a picture she drew. It showed Powder and the animatronics under a huge fort, a bit like the one Vi built for her in the office.
“Powder, I know this is all very exciting, but maybe we should talk this out for a second,” Vi started to say before Caitlyn cut her off.
“You know, I think we could use the table for the fort,” Caitlyn suggested, smiling.
Powder nodded happily as they all started to arrange the tables to build a fort.
She was a little bit put off. Why did everyone act like this one so normal? It made sense for Powder, but Caitlyn?
She supposed it was in her best interest to pretend she didn’t care. She would confront Powder about all this later.
She moved some of the tables and chairs to build something that looked a bit like a fort. With a huge blanket, it might just work.
“They have some tarps in the back. They used to use them for parties, back when this place was up and running. I’ll go get some of them. Vi, you can come too,” she offered.
Vi decided to follow her.
“So why do you know all this?” she asked.
“What do you mean?” Caitlyn asked, looking for the tarps.
“You clearly knew about the animatronics being… strange, you know about the tarps, you honestly seem to know everything about this place. Why?” she asked. It seemed like something was up with her and she didn’t know what.
“I thought I told you. I came here a lot when I was a kid,” she said.
Vi wasn’t convinced, but she didn’t want to push it.
Finally, Caitlyn found the tarps so they headed back to the main area.
“Here they are!” Caitlyn exclaimed. Powder seemed pleased and the animatronics seemed about as happy as giant robots could be.
They all pitched in to put up the fort.
Once it was down, everyone, even the animatronics, laid down in a circle, looking up at the ceiling.
“This is nice,” Powder said.
Caitlyn nodded in agreement. She was closing her eyes, seeming to just take everything in.
She was really pretty when she wasn’t worrying about everything.
“Hey, Vi, could I talk to you for a second?” Caitlyn asked. “Outside, maybe?”
She seemed angry.
“What is it?” she asked once they were both outside.
“What were you thinking, bringing her here!” she said, yelling at her.
“Caitlyn, I-” she started saying before Caitlyn cut her off.
“She’s not safe here, Vi. You should know that. I told you to be more responsible! Listen. You can do whatever you want with your own life, but if you ever bring her here again, I will shoot you,” she said. She was dead serious.
“You were all happy, and, “Hey guys, let’s build a fort” two minutes ago!” Vi tried to argue her side of the story.
“I mean it, Vi. Don’t bring her back here,”
Notes:
We're getting into the real story, finally. This story isn't very good, to be honest, but it's been very fun to write so far. I'm feeling confident that I'll actually finish it this time, wish me luck. Hopefully I'll update in a few days. Until then, I hope you liked it!
