Work Text:
Oberyn hated to leave his little wife, but he had his princely duties of attending a council meeting with his brother to discuss the betrothal of Princess Myrcella and Prince Trystane. If he had it his way, he’d spend the day in bed with Sansa and Ellaria, who had gone for the day to tend to the girls in the Water Gardens. Before he left he ensured Sansa was well protected with her sworn sword Ser Castos Bedwyck at the doors and Ser Daemon Sand not far away. With Myrcella came members of the King’s Guard to ensure her safety and comfort. Oberyn didn’t trust them.
Whimpering cuts through the silence of Oberyn’s bed chambers followed by the rustling of sheets, Sansa’s face tense as she sleeps. Nightmares are few, but they still find her now and then, a reason Oberyn doesn’t wish to leave her alone, not wanting her to wake with no one at her side.
Waking slowly, it took Sansa a bit to gather her bearings and realize she was safe. It also helps that despite having blankets and sheets adoring the bed, she is also curled up in Oberyn’s mustard-colored robe, the same one he was wearing when he saved her in King’s Landing. It brings her comfort because it smells like him, but also reminds her she is safe and she never has to face anyone in King’s Landing again.
She tucks the robe a little tighter around her bare body, letting it swallow her slender frame, having no plans of taking it off.
“Little wolf, why are you awake? It is still early.” Oberyn’s voice calls as he closes the chamber doors behind him. “And may I say, that robe does wonders, I’m almost jealous.”
“I missed you.” She blushes. “I don’t think I wish to give it back.”
“Then it is yours to keep.” Pressing a kiss to Sansa’s forehead Oberyn settles next to her. “I expected to still see you sleeping, princess.”
“I was restless. I just keep thinking about the Lannister Knights here…” Sighing, she leans into Oberyn’s embrace as he wraps an arm around her.
While he can’t save her from her nightmares, he can give her comfort through them. Pressing a kiss to her forehead, he rests back against the pillows, letting Sansa’s head rest on his chest.
“They know what will happen should they breathe even a word to you. I couldn’t protect you then, but I can now, little wife. And if I shall fail, we know Ellaria will not.” He chuckles, gaining a small smile from Sansa’s lips.
“I did enjoy her threatening to castrate them all.” Sansa comments, yawning softly.
“You need your rest, princess. I promise to be here when you wake.” Tucking his chin to look down at his sleepy wife.
Continuing to rub her back, he watches her slowly drift off. He was content to stay, cuddling his wife as long as she needed.
