Work Text:
The boys and Jack are ecstatic for today. Today is the day that they all get to see the old Ghostbusters movies. Their local movie theater is holding an event that shows both movies on the same day.
Dean- with a smile on his face- can't wait to show Jack one of his favorite movies. He drives faster than usual, blowing past most stop signs and nearly hitting a pedestrian.
Cas tries to step on his imaginary breaks, “Dean, slow down! You almost hit that guy on the street!”
“That asshat shouldn’t have been in the middle of the road.”
“He was using the crosswalk!”
“Yeah well, he was in my blind spot.”
“What blind spot, Dean? It's a clear day and the streets don't curve! Dean! Dean! That's a stop sign!”
“Those are suggestions.”
“Dean, if you don’t slow down, I'm taking Jack home!”
Dean sees the seriousness in Cas’ face, and decides to let off the pedal a little, “Sorry, I'll slow down now that we’re close.”
Cas looks in the back to check on Sam and Jack, “Sam, how do you not tell him anything?”
Sam looks at Cas, “Honestly, it's better this way. Last time I tried telling him something while recklessly driving, we ended in a three car collision.”
“Your fault, Sammy, you were back seat driving. And Cas, we’re gonna have to talk about your back seat driving problem.”
They make it in time, noticing they still have about twenty minutes before the movie starts. Dean hops out of the car and moves to the back to retrieve Jack from his car seat, “You ready to bust some ghosts?!”
Jack looks at Dean, “Gostbustar!”
Throwing Jack on top of his shoulders, he jogs to the box office leaving Cas and Sam behind.
“Sam, why does your brother love this movie so much?”
“It’s one of the good memories Dean had with dad going to the movies to see this particular one.”
Cas- feeling somber- decides to forget about earlier and tries to enjoy the rest of the day. Dean and Jack are seen far in the distance waiting impatiently with tickets in hand. They all make it inside without incident and decide to sit in the middle of the theater.
Jack and Cas sit down first, then Dean and Sam are about to take their seats when Dean stops mid section and turns around, “Sam, I hate to ask but could you get us some snacks for the movie? I would ask Cas but I think he’s still mad at me. Look, he even put Jack as a buffer between us.”
Sam, visually annoyed, turns around and makes his way to the snack stand.
Cas gets up to follow Sam toward the concession line.
“Cas? I love you.”
Cas pretends to ignore Dean as he makes his way out. Jack looks at Dean sad, “Don’t worry, Jack. Daddy is just being grumpy right now.”
Dean calms Jack down by rubbing his back. Their moment is soon disrupted by a commercial. “ Don't forget to purchase your Scooby-Doo/Ghostbuster lunch pail at participating theaters. Scooby-Doo on the front, Ghostbusters in the back. Get yours now.”
“Dad, dad, dad, can I get one? Ooh, please can I get one please?”
“We will have to wait and see if your father’s okay with it.”
Cas returns first with some of the food.
“Where’s Sam?”
“He was talking to one of the employees about something. He said that he would be in but later before the movie starts.”
“You still mad at me?”
Cas leans in for a kiss before taking his seat, “You see, Jack, I told you he was just being grumpy.”
Sam manages to make it back in time before the last trailer plays.
“Took you long enough, Sammy.”
“Shut up, bitch.”
“Jerk.”
The movie is just like they remembered it. Sam, Dean, Cas, and Jack are laughing throughout most of the film. And before they know it, the end credits are running down the screen.
“Come on Jack, let's get this lunchbox before the other movie starts.”
“Alright!”
Jack excitedly rushes ahead of Dean to the line. Jack gets there ahead of Dean, looking as much as he can, he notices that the lunchbox is nowhere displayed.
“Can I help you, son?”
“Yes, my boy and I would like the Scooby lunchbox.”
“Oh, I'm sorry but we just sold out of that.”
“Do you know when you will get more in?”
“It's a limited edition; us and another theater will not be getting anything after. Sorry.”
“What other theater is doing the promotion?” Dean asks impatiently.
“That would be Ogdenville, but it’s about twenty minutes away.”
Dean rushes back to the room that they were in and spots Cas before the lights go off.
“Cas! Cas! Come on, let's go, we gotta go now!”
“What happened to Jack? Is he okay?”
“Jack’s fine, come on, we need to hurry.”
Cas worriedly follows Dean towards the parking lot as he straps Jack in the car seat and hurries to buckle himself in. Dean starts the car and peels out of the parking lot.
“Where’s Sam? Is he okay?” Cas asks as he struggles to get himself strapped in.
“What? I don't know, maybe. I'm trying to concentrate on the road right now. I promise it will all make sense in the end.”
While at the theater, Sam notices that his family has been gone for a while. He looks into the seats and sees nothing that looks familiar. After spending five minutes looking for any clues towards their whereabouts. He finally gives in and decides to ask one of the clerks.
“Uh, hi, have you seen the people that came in here with me?”
“Yeah the big guy that acts like a kid was trying to hunt down this promotional gift we were selling,”
“The lunch box?”
Smirking, the clerk nods his head yes.
Cas frantically sees a call from Sam coming in.
“Hello? Sam, are you okay?”
“Of course I’m okay. Hey, do me a favor and ask Dean to pull over and check the trunk.”
“What? Why?”
“I have a feeling that he will stop acting like an asshat.”
“Dean, Sam says pull over and look in the trunk.”
“What? No, we don't have time.”
Cas angrily shouts, “Dean, pull the damn car over!”
Dean reluctantly pulls the car over and rushes to the trunk. He opens the trunk to find two Scooby-Doo/Ghostbusters lunchboxes staring right at him.
Cas lets out a frustrated exhale, “That’s it, Dean, give me the keys.”
“What? No, why would I-”
“Dean, you lose the car for a week or you lose it for a month. Take your pick.”
Dean hands the keys to Cas and sits in the back with Jack.
“Oh, by the way, Sam says he's beating your ass for leaving him like you did and he hopes you like his gift.”
Dean looks at Jack, both admiring their lunchboxes, “Totally worth it.”
