Stay with me, he said.
Stay for me, he pleaded.
I’d shake my head if I could, yet my muscles were weak and my hands numb.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
He wipes it, smearing blood all over his face. He looks at his hand, horrified.
We both know he’s seen blood before. Hell, he’s seen death. He’d been the cause and reaper. Yet my death affects him? Curious.
“Dazai, what the fuck. Stay awake.” I open my eyes again, not even having noticed them falling closed.
“Thank fuck. Just stay with me, okay? I’ll get you to your stupid agency so that stupid woman can fix you.” Chuuya moved to pick me up, keeping pressure on the horizontal cut on my arm.
I grimace at the pain, though it feels far away and faded. My head is swimming with blood loss. I force my face into a smile even as Chuuya pushes me into a car and drives off.
I could die like this.
I want to die like this.
“Let me die,” I say, my voice weak and hoarse.
“Spare your energy Dazai,” Chuuya spoke through gritted teeth. His knuckles were white from how aggressively he was griping the steering wheel.
“Please.” I take a moment to gather my energy. “Let me die.” I take a trembling breath. “Please.”
I can feel my eyes slipping close again. The car suddenly comes to a stop. “No,” Chuuya said. And somehow, it didn’t sound like a plead. It was a promise. And I believed him, even as I lost my grip on consciousness.
