Chapter 2: unification in the absence of tragedy
Chapter Text
Nico Vorgeil is an inventor, scientist, thinker, genius, spearhead, leader, a professional. The only thing he looks for is a complete, solidified, and expert understanding of the world and how it works.
However, there are moments when he is a person with emotions and wants outside of logic.
It's hard to let go of the science when he's trying to care, and it's hard to let go of the care when he's trying to science. Often, there are parts of him he wishes he could forget in certain moments. And in many more, there are moments he does not want to forget at all.
The first time he manifested UNFORGETTABLE, even for a tiny moment, before he had even a strong enough grasp to let it stay, was when he saw her. Not the her that was tired, weary, slowly destroying herself from the inside out. The her with the peaceful demeanor, relaxed posture, slumped leisurely. Deep breaths, the slow and calm rise of her chest with each breath. The first time, it was then, wasn't it?
Ichico Nemuri, falling down in his arms, finally getting that sleep he would've killed God to let her have. He had unknowingly engraved that image into his mind, and then the power had gone dormant like it was sealed away.
Of course, it was easy to know why it had manifested then. Someone who could finally match his intellect, a crucial member of his team, and well, back then, someone he cared about, doomed to die because of their power. Until suddenly, a black-haired girl with a lover on the sun and almost 10 times as old as she looks swoops in with a crazy plan (to a scientist, that is, the idea of a soul cannot be bound between the parameters of his beloved logic,) and the plan works.
And there was finally a way to save her. From her negation, from God.
He owed it all to Fuuko. Saving them from that rough life that had brought her to tears the first time they met.
"Why did you do it? You said I was at my scientific prime after her death- someone fueled by desperation."
Well, it wouldn't be so hard to imagine someone like Fuuko saving someone despite there being a drawback just because she didn't want to see anyone die.
"Nah. I think you were at your scientific prime because of meeting her. 3 great scientists are better than 2."
He'll never know who the third scientist is, other than him and Ichico. Not yet, she says.
The second time he manifested UNFORGETTABLE, was again, Ichico. Or perhaps, it had always been there.
UNFORGETTABLE, Self-Targeting, Compulsory Activation Type. Condition needed to activate: Something Nico loves.
"Here. I adjusted your brain a little to change the coordinates of your eye bags. Even with the astral projection, it'll take a while for them to go away."
"Think of it as natural eyeshadow."
"Don't cover it with your hair."
That was the first time Ichico had loved him. He could tell from her change in demeanor, from the way she carries herself around him now.
Nico Vorgeil has strict standards for "love," but the prospect of him loving someone like her isn't so far away that it's unexplainable. Love has never been one to bother him much, so why should he object to anything now? Especially when they're already engaged.
"Waiting 4.6 billion years on the sun just to marry someone? Maybe the UMA Loyalty is in its third phase."
Anyone so determined to save the world for their lover, anyone with a resolve so steady it lived outside of logic, if they were together, it could only do good. After all, he is Nico Vorgeil. The only one intelligent enough to understand even half of Fuuko's decisions.
"THIS UNION OF YOURS... HELPED ME GROW, DIDN'T IT?"
"I WON'T LET YOU CHANGE ANYTHING I HOLD DEAR."
Gina Chamber is not exactly a fan of change.
Then she met Fuuko Izumo. The girl who, in the life she had before, gave stars to the sky before there were stars.
Gina Chamber is not exactly a fan of anyone who could pose a threat to her friends.
This includes newcomers- people who haven't proven their trust. it's been so
Even if he had been a key component in taking down the UMA Sick, she's skeptical of how trustworthy he can be. After all, he's such a brute.
Still, Fuuko has loved him for centuries, loves him enough to try and kill God for him, so that they can grow old together. Loves him enough to rescue him from the sun.
And he loves her enough to put that ring on her finger, give her that kiss, before going off to billions and thousands and hundreds of years of agony in hell. He had loved her enough to suppress those Master Rules with his soul for her, waiting for the time when his rescue would finally be in the wheel of her plans.
Gina Chamber is not exactly a fan of love, perhaps because she doesn't know it very well.
But while Fuuko was saving Leila's life, barking out orders to circumvent that beautifully monstrous unluck of hers, when she saw Andy, Gena could not forget the look on her face.
Gina Chamber is not exactly a fan of change (consistency is key, she says, and repetition is reassurance.)
However, that man could make Fuuko so starstruck and overwhelmed even in just a minute. Like she was about to burst into a beaming smile, or maybe, become the sun itself.
Someone like that, how could someone like that be so bad?
Gina Chamber is not exactly a fan of change, but changing the world so that Fuuko will finally be able to run into her beloved's arms, is something she will do.
Gina Chamber is not exactly a fan of change, but she grinned when she received that letter slipped under the door to her room anyway.
"So they're finally getting married."
Gina Chamber is not exactly a fan of change, but a change of attire for Fuuko, like a wedding dress, is something she can get by.
Void Volks is a presence that cannot be ignored. An imposing figure, a voice that immediately sucks in the attention of anyone. Someone unavoidable. There are many things that unavoidable can be. A chance, a battle, an event. For him, it's a hit. For the Earth, it's the disgusting bet between Luna and the Sun. For Andy and Fuuko, it's meeting each other again.
For two lovers to never see each other again, after such a journey, is too cruel. For that explosive end the gods want, that's why it's unavoidable they will reunite. They bring out the most in each other, Luna's greatest weapon.
When Void Volks says something is unavoidable, it's usually a punch or kick. He's not a fortune teller. He is someone who will make you sure of his presence.
For him, the boxing scene was a savior, salvation. Something that brought life to that unavoidable. Something that made people want to avoid him in fear rather than disgust. Yet they couldn't, because he was in control now. He enjoyed that agency.
When she fought him back then, his last fight because of an unavoidable future, it was like the first time he entered the ring. That underlying sense of freedom. That ability to leave his old world without any regrets. When he manifested that power, it was unavoidable that he'd never be the same again, no matter how hard he tried. But she came, and she let him accept the change.
She brought him into a bigger ring, one really made for him. Where nothing would have to avoid him, where he didn't have to avoid anyone. When the world should have abandoned him, she picked him up, asked him to help her create a world that would never fail them again.
When it became a Negator boxing match, he had never felt any freer before. Even when he was up against the strongest person he'd ever met before her, even when that police officer had brought him into the boxing scene, he had never felt so unrestricted.
For once, he wanted something to be unavoidable because he wished for it to happen to him.
That was why it had activated at that moment.
UNAVOIDABLE.
"A WORLD WHERE I'M ALLOWED TO BE..."
That pass to the fight of his life. Negation, the ability that would finally bring out the her he wanted to fight. The one he had been looking for when she confronted him before the match. The thing that evened the playing field for a moment, to bring out her full potential. To fight each other with no setbacks. UNAVOIDABLE and UNLUCK. A pure match to decide the winner with any factor.
Even then, when she had passed out standing, the people still cheered for her.
Of course, it was deserved. Someone who could fight like they were guiding someone to freedom. Like a real savior.
"UNDEAD? Someone like that is sure to put up a good fight. If they're together, they're sure to kill God then."
Void Volks is not a fortune teller, but the truth of this prediction is very much unavoidable.
Chapter Text
For Yusai, UNDRAW was an ultimatum to give up all the years she had spent honing her swordsmanship. It had labeled her a fool, to not be able to draw that katana, to save others.
For Fuuko, UNDRAW is something that makes Yusai an even better samurai.
She'd have to train herself from the start, all because of that stupid ability.
She's able to utilize a form of combat that lets her make use of the fact that while she's accustomed to UNDRAW, her opponent isn't.
After they kill God, she'd finally be able to be free from this sin struck upon her as a samurai.
After they kill God, she'll have two versatile techniques in her arsenal.
She'd have to unlearn again.
She'll use her new skills to create a style that no one can surpass.
Perhaps while not having mastered UNDRAW, she had let the pessimism take root inside her brain, not letting it draw from her thoughts.
And then when she saw that girl in the wind, flying out from who knows where-
The pessimism had seeded itself deep into her logic, her understanding. So, to bring out Yusai, UNDRAW, Fuuko had taken that logic and thrown it out of the window. Bringing her ideas far too fantastical and outlandish, the answers to her questions. So mystifying they had been cathartic.
"You're a Negator. What you have been fighting is a UMA. Unidentified Mysterious Animal. A rule of this world."
She had looked at the apparent granny with little interest then, devouring the food. She had been pushed to limits she didn't know could be stretched that far during those 7 days she had fended off that creature. "What exactly do I negate?"
"Someone's ability to draw something from another."
That of course, made sense. It rendered what made her Yusai completely useless. She was defective.
But having been so close to death, all that really mattered was the food. "Yes yes, I see. Undraw, negators... could I get a refill?"
"Of course," Fuuko responded, unfazed by the rate at which Yusai was almost vacuuming the food. "That's why we need your help, Ms. Yusai."
"I'm in your debt, but as much as I would love to lend my services... this UNDRAW, as you call it, has left me like this."
Then, she really thought about her situation. Everything she had put her life into- gone. Powerless to protect anyone.
"WHAT GOOD IS A SWORDSWOMAN WHO CANNOT DRAW HER KATANA?"
She thought she would have to ponder time and time again to think of an answer that did not equate to "nothing," but Izumo Fuuko would kill Gods to achieve her goals. "Plenty of good," she answered like she knew exactly how to utilize her. "There are things that only you can do."
After the food had nourished her mind and body, she reevaluated it all again. A girl with the stare of a leader, the body of a 20-year-old, the mind of someone decades old, and the resolve of someone who wanted to change the world. Someone who turned other's misfortune into her opportunities. Someone who utilized the very thing they condemned upon other people to their advantage. In any other setting, she would be cruel.
"What exactly do you need help with, Fuuko?"
And the girl grinned, like she was smiling purely to showcase Yusai a new definition of determination.
Now, that girl was getting married. To the same man who the past her had apparently been in love with. It was a bit amusing, to think about how the savior to her family name she had begged to marry her in her past life and her savior in the now were getting married. It was even more amusing to think that they had been engaged for 4.6 billion years. That sort of reckless commitment seemed to be a shared trait then.
A woman who'd kill anyone she touched, who planned on killing the Sun for her lover.
A man, who'd never be killed, who planned on protecting his lover with his life.
How could the her billions of years before even think of intercepting such a romance?
"I'll make sure you never withdraw those vows."
For Yusai, UNDRAW is an advantage.
For the Yamaoka Isshin family, UNBREAKABLE is a spirit beyond words that can only be passed down to those that it chooses. It is an art that bonds the blacksmiths, it is the counterpart to a bloodless spring.
The first Isshin had taken the childish Spring, and he had cultivated it into a beauty for the world. Cultivated it into what made the blossoms bloom and the games enjoyable. He had died in his plight. So had the Isshin after him, and the many Isshins to come.
Isshin the 12th is no different. He wielded the unbreakable armor and took that stance against that creature. If he could not do it, the next Isshin would. And so on.
An old man, at his very end. Dying to protect his family wasn't so bad- it was an honorable death. But then she had stepped in.
A woman with hair white as wind, cutting down that terror without even drawing her blade. By her side, a resolute lady with a deal to make. He, although unafraid to accept his demise, was suddenly so thankful for his life. He would live another day to see his granddaughter, to be with his family. He would see the spring blossoms again. He'd well, probably repay them with his life if they wanted him to.
But UNBREAKABLE is worth more than his life. It is worth all of the ancestors that it had passed down onto, honed, never perfected, and then given on. It is a masterpiece, and all of his predecessors had been artists, adding their patterns to this tapestry.
"Haruka was beautiful and strong,
"and until the very end..."
"...her UNBREAKABLE helped protect me."
If his own granddaughter had deemed Fuuko's cause worthy of UNBREAKABLE, then... "That was surely because she thought you would protect even more people!"
"THEREFORE, I WILL TAKE ON HER WILL AND DO THE SAME!"
Until the day Haruka Yamaoka, Isshin 13th becomes the vessel for UNBREAKABLE, he will be the catalyst for the 100th version of her will. What he will build, what he will protect, it will be for her. Until her future is unbreakable. If Haruka will master UNBREAKABLE for this girl, then as her grandfather, who is he to not help her? Often, what is most unbreakable is what the eye cannot see.
To ensure his granddaughter is happy, he will negate that fragility.
Haruka Yamaoka has only heard stories of Izumo Fuuko. The black haired woman who could fight and inflict misfortune like no other- the one who had saved her family. The one who had said she'd do great things. That she was strong, beautiful. Her grandfather is the last she knows to see the mystical lady, but all he'll disclose was that she'll be gone for a while, maybe even a few years.
Although the UNION members all have recollections of the legendary woman, stories and tales, they all are myths to her, not without a picture to place in her mind. From her own memories, she can only piece a kind face, round yet hardened eyes with tears running down. The image is blurry, and if she focuses, the finer details are smudged and blurred, like an abstract painting that beckons you to notice the imperfections and the in betweens.
Her grandfather tells her that they will meet someday, and she'll do unbelievable things when they do. Still, she would like to see this savior in a woman that will bring out the true potential of UNBREAKABLE from her.
For now, until the years pass by, Izumo Fuuko is a just a character. A fairytale.
Until they reach their happily ever after.
All Sean Datz has ever wanted to be is in the spotlight- shining, with the eyes on him. Consuming, he wishes he was unavoidable. But, like it often does to negators, tragedy struck him forever into a minor role. Doomed to always be in the background- a backup. He wanted to be a main player, someone people would look at in awe and wonder.
The star.
How cruel it is, to make him negate the very rule he so desperately wanted to embrace him.
Gina had wanted stagnancy, Yusai had wanted to keep danger stowed away, Nico had wanted to remember moments too precious for the human mind.
All Sean had wanted was to be seen. He'll never be in a major role, he'll never act again.
To him, a minor role was just cannon fodder. Something to help the main characters stand out. Like the details and furniture in the background. Integral to the structure, but that was really all there was. So much effort into a role that would be overlooked in minutes.
What was the point?
And then, he finally had the chance to be in a lead role- be the key player, the one component. The heart. Where he would be recognized. Anywhere that would acknowledge his talents, his presence. Sure enough, he found a new problem.
He was never enough for a main role. Too weak, too cowardly, too afraid, too dumb. A miscast. Even when the light shone on him, he was never bright enough to shine. Even with people just like him, they ruled over him in every other aspect. Of course, he'd always be unseen.
It had manifested like God's condemnation upon him.
Even though he was finally given a chance to utilize that punishment, he couldn't assume that role. He was, inescapably, a coward. And still- they had protected a fool like him. "You're UNSEEN, Mr. Sean! You're not miscast here."
That hope, that blinding light he had tried to ignore. How beautiful it would be if it were brighter, shining upon the whole world. If he can support that light, bring it to greater heights, is that not more than enough? If he can do that with his power- it is equal to being the star itself. Maybe this was what his dad meant. If the applause is for the brilliance of the luminary, then he, who helps it shine with that brilliance, that applause is for him as well.
Structure is the foundation for a beautiful work of art.
His father's words, he wishes that his old man were alive so that he could apologize for all those times he overlooked those minor characters.
"I DON'T MIND A SIDE ROLE THIS TIME AROUND. "
If they could touch the impossible because of him, then the prospect of that is more than being seen. Many of the most powerful, integral forces are unseen.
"I wonder if UNSEEN will work on UNDEAD's clones if I'm holding onto him."
After they kill God, he thinks he can be content with those supporting characters. Surely then, he will have had enough experience to make any actor shine.
Many things in the world tend to be unfair, in spite of the rules. It's often the rules that are unfair anyway.
Billy Alfred is quite a selfish person. Their powers, their capabilities, their abilities to change the world. He's envious of how he does not have that sort of resolve. He's envious of how he cannot get that pure, unbridled hope without doubt.
He thinks it is unfair, how bright they can be, even though he is the one that is lacking. Perhaps God smiled upon him then, granting him that vengeful wish. His jealousy, so powerful, it manifested into admiration so great he wanted to be them.
That was UNFAIR, how he could only match up to them by trying to replicate them. To them, it was unfair how he could get anything he wanted.
If there is only one enemy, and that enemy is him, then does he not have the power to make the world fair? That was what Billy had first thought. And then, when the Disc began to fall, when they all looked at her with that trust, that envy began to be so benevolent. He wished to be her, that chance, that faith she had in her allies and the faith they had in her.
"THE STRENGTH OF YOUR SPIRIT... IS DOWNRIGHT UNFAIR."
After all, who could win against a force like that? Fighting against her is no war; it's just a chaotic journey toward peace.
