Work Text:
A well known fact about Tatsuo was that he loved to sleep. Didn’t matter where; Didn’t matter when. If he was tired, he’d rest his head somewhere and take a nap. Tatsuo oftentimes found himself waking up hours after his alarm, or to Takasugi banging his door down. Since Daigo reappeared in his life, sometimes it was that familiar voice on the other side of his door that awoke him, chastising him for sleeping in until the afternoon. He’d blame it on the time he goes to sleep. “But I’m up so late for work, so of course I’d sleep in!”
Masayoshi, on the other hand, was the opposite. The detective slept so little it was a wonder to everyone around him that he even had the energy to chase down people day in and day out at work. Still, it suited him just fine. He wasn’t really sure why he couldn’t sleep. He was tired. God , was he tired. Yet nights would pass by as Masayoshi stared at his ceiling from his futon, passing out for half an hour at a time - an hour, if he was lucky. Despite tea being his beverage of choice, he was seen every morning with a cup of coffee.
In life, you hear the phrase ‘opposites attract’ often.
Masayoshi and Tatsuo’s relationship was no different from this unwritten rule of nature.
Even at a first glance, the two men make an unlikely duo. Masayoshi is more well kept, while Tatsuo sports a more rugged look. Masayoshi is four inches shorter. Tatsuo has more muscle. Masayoshi preferred to show his affections in private. Tatsuo was a lover of PDA, showing off his partner to anyone and everyone that would listen. Right down to the colours they prefer to wear, they were different. Despite all that, the two men were happier now then they had ever been before. Of course, their relationship had its ups and downs - all relationships do. Still, the duo were inseparable. They had been, now, for the better part of a year.
“Ma-chaaaan,” Tatsuo’s voice rang out, the sound filling up the small apartment the two men shared in Kineicho, “C’mon, come take a nap with me! When’s the last time you slept?”
Masayoshi looked up from his laptop, the furious typing of a report ending as he looked over at his boyfriend ( boyfriend ! He’d never get used to that). The question hung in the air as the detective took a sip from his coffee.
“Uh, last night? I think I got an hour or two,” he replied smoothly, resting his chin in his hand. Tatsuo looked comfortable, all snuggled up on that futon with the duvet pulled so far up only his gorgeous brown eyes were visible. A twinge of affection struck Masayoshi as he simply smiled, taking in the sight. “Besides, I’ve got to finish this report before tomorrow.” His sentence was punctuated with the sound of typing once more, eyes glancing back to the screen as he stifled a yawn.
“But you’re tired,” Tatsuo pointed out with a small frown, pulling the duvet down far enough to expose the rest of his sleepy face. “At least come and cuddle?” Tatsuo stretched his long arms out, giving Masayoshi a hopeful smile.
“Yes!” A small sound of victory was heard as Masayoshi let out a small chuckle and stood up from the floor, shrugging his jacket off and making his way toward the futon on the other side of the room. “How could I ever say no to you, Ta-chan?”
As the detective lowered himself to the floor, a startled yelp left his throat as muscular arms wrapped themselves around his tired body and pulled him close, barely giving him room to breathe. “You're gonna suffocate me! Though I guess I wouldn't mind…” he hummed, resting his cheek against Tatsuo’s chest with a warm sigh.
“Is that a suggestion?” Tatsuo laughed, wiggling his eyebrows at Masayoshi before giving him a little room to breathe - his arms refused to be anywhere other than around his beloved, though.
“Why?” A tired grumble answered, “You offering?”
A calloused hand made its way into Masayoshi’s hair and began to gently scratch at his scalp, pulling a sound of delight from the younger man as his question went unanswered. He hadn't realised how tired he was. Still, he knew that falling asleep wouldn't be that easy. As his gaze drifted upward, Masayoshi was unsurprised to see Tatsuo already looking at him.
The gleam in Tatsuo’s eyes reminded him, and many others, of a lovesick puppy. Whoever said the eyes were the window to the soul was absolutely correct, for Tatsuo’s shone so brightly a melody of warmth, affection, and trust. His warm gaze sang a song of love. A sense of belonging. Tatsuo didn't think he'd ever find that in his life, let alone in the form of Masayoshi Tanimura. He'd never been happier than in this moment.
Masayoshi felt the same. Since his father had been killed all those years ago, the only place he belonged was Little Asia. Everyone at work looked down on him, and he had never felt close to those he had met throughout his life. That was, until Tatsuo came along. Never before had someone so quickly swept Masayoshi off his feet. Never before had someone left him gasping for air as though he was drowning. Never before had someone bothered to try and break past that exterior that Masayoshi had spent so long building up.
Tatsuo pressed a gentle kiss to the crown of Masayoshi's hair before adjusting his position and closing his eyes, face buried in dark hair.
Masayoshi hummed a sound of peace, cheek resting against the white vest that Tatsuo loved to wear and a lazy arm wrapped loosely around his waist.
They could stay like this forever. It didn't matter who came knocking at the door. Nothing mattered, so long as they had each other.
“Sweet dreams, Ma-chan.”
“Sweet dreams to you too, Ta-chan.”
