Arlecchino watched the hands on the clock as it ticked. It already hit midnight and she’s not home, barely home, she still has a stack of papers to file out. Angerly, she sighed, rubbing her temples with her index fingers.
She promised Furina she would be home by 10 at the earliest. Well, guess what? It’s 12 fucking am. Even if she said 10 at the earliest and it technically didn’t mean she would be home at 10, she still promised, and Arlecchino usually never breaks promises.
A groan escaped her and she signed off another paper and slid it to the stack on the right of her. She must’ve zoomed out because she was already halfway through the stack. Hmm, maybe she should zone out more often.

12:59:00.
1:00:00.
Furina was sitting on the couch, watching the grandfather clock in the living room as she waited for her wife to come home. She was running late, though this was not the first time, and far from the last. Her head bobbed as she was starting to get sleepy. Her eyes half mast, she was slowly slipping into unconsciousness, head bobbing with each blink.
A noise caused her to wake up. It was only the fridge, thank god, but she was clearly too tired to stay up.
What a shame, she wanted to stay up until Arlecchino came back, besides she made her favorite dinner and everything! And, if she did stay up, maybe the Harbinger would be proud of her and reward her. Just maybe…
Furina mumbled something incoherent and got up from the couch, albeit a little clumsily, and went into the bedroom, closed the door, slipped under the cold covers, and fell asleep.
———
Twenty minutes later, the front door opened. Furina heard this and slowly opened her eyes, getting rid of the tiredness in them by rubbing them. She got up slowly and slipped out of bed. She slowly walked to the door and cracked it open. She peeked out and saw a figure standing in the living room. Furina blinked a few times to get more adjusted to the darkness.
“Arlecchino?”
Arlecchino turned her head.
“Hello, Furina. Why are you awake?”
Furina groaned, rubbing her heterochromatic eyes. “I just woke up…” She yawned and shook the tiredness out of her. “Why are you coming home late, Arle?” She asked, raising a hand to rest on the door to keep herself up. “Have you eaten anything? If not, I prepared dinner for you…your favorite.”
Arlecchino chuckled and hummed, turning in the kitchen light and opening the fridge. “It seems like you did…”
“Mmhm…”
Furina walked over to her wife and tapped her on her shoulder, although she had to go on her tippy toes, she would never admit that though. “Why are you coming home late…?”
The Knave turned around and her eyes softened at how adorable the younger woman was being. With a smile, she ran her fingers through the baby blue locks. “I’m sorry, I was stuck finishing paperwork…” she said, moving her bangs out of her face and kissing her forehead gently. “Nevertheless, I’m here now, so, why don’t we climb into bed and hug one another, hm?”
Furina tiredly smiled and reached up to kiss Arlecchino on the cheek. She then raised her arms and grabbed at the air. “Carry me?”
The Knave hummed and shook her head, although she did lift Furina. The performer wrapped her arms around Arlecchino’s neck to keep herself up just in case the Harbinger wanted to drop her, which she never would.
“My apologies for arriving late, Miss Furina. As you know, my coworkers are an incompetent bunch, ‘no one leaves the workplace without finishing their stack of papers first,’ as they said.”
“Hm, that’s alright…” She murmured, eyes drooping when she was laid on the soft blankets. She felt the bed shift as Arlecchino also slipped under the covers. “As long as you’re here…it’s okay!”
Not even a second after she finished her sentence she passed out. Arlecchino hummed thoughtlessly and gently traced the woman’s facial features. “Have a good sleep, Furina.”
