slight glances slip from yellowed eyes
to brilliant blue, dancing
around each other with such care
but oh, never speak true,
never look full in the face.
even battle-worn, even stopping
the world’s end to spend
one more moment on earth together,
even sneaking into places
long-since forbidden and
inhospitable. give me something
that could destroy me
as a token of your love.
refuse, refuse, relent. this dance
we’re caught in. demons that lie, birds that bleat
like goats - never said who
I was lying to. please don’t go
where I can’t follow,
because you have seen me follow,
no matter how it burns.
please sit next to me
and watch one more leaf
land on the water, watch one more duck
drift on the pond.
