Chapter Text
“Come on, get dressed or we'll be late for church!”
Mom's voice was stressed. Luke looked at the dress her mom had picked out for her. It was yellow, which wasn't too bad, but it had horrible puffy sleeves and looked way too… girl. She'd have to wear tights with it, and the uncomfortable girly Sunday shoes. All she wanted to do was stay home and make a potion out of leaves and sticks and water in the backyard. Maybe she could get Alex to ditch church, too and help her.
Mom stuck the head in the door. “Honey, please get dressed. You can take it off again right when we come home.”
“But I don't even wanna put it on!”, Luke protested. “It's icky. The sleeves hate me.”
Her mom laughed. What did she laugh at? “Don't you mean you hate the sleeves?”
“Both. They hate me back. We hate each other.”
“Well, honey, it's only for a little while. You can play with Alex when we get there.”
“Fine.”
It was no use arguing with mom. Luke put on the dress. She made sure not to look in the mirror when she walked out and tried not to listen when her mom and dad told her how gorgeous she looked. Not for the first time, she wished she was a boy.
