Work Text:
The common room was mostly quiet, with the exception of some talking, footsteps, and the occasional paper rustling.
It’s a familiar sight, really. It’s comfortable. Enid sat in a small nook with Tyler, Bianca, Ajax, and Yoko, and Xavier. Most were on their phones, but Yoko was attempting to study, but was struggling to stay concentrated.
Wednesday never came down to the common room. She spent her free time investigating random mysteries, working on her book, or reading. And no matter how much Enid tried to get her to spend time with her, alas, that just isn’t who she is.
The large wooden door of the common room crept open. At first, noone paid much mind to the person entering. Well, except for Enid. She perked her head up to get a look at who entered.
“Wednesday?” she said, getting up to talk to her. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you here before!”
“Hello,” Wednesday responded, dryly, walking over to a table near the nook where Enid was just sitting.
”I figured a change of scenery could be beneficial to my writing. And this will.. suffice.”
Enid smiled at her. Always Wednesday.
”Oh, Wednesday. Hey,” Tyler finally said. The others followed, with scattered ‘hey’s and the occasional questioning of what she’s doing there. She answered the first person, and quickly began ignoring the rest.
Wednesday turned her head to look at Enid. The way that her hair fell into place like dominoes. The curvature of her eyebrows and the shape of her eyes and the slope of her nose.
She often found herself unable to look away once she began admiring Enid. I mean, how could she not?
Enid’s eyes traveled to meet Wednesday’s who immediately looked away. She felt a fluttery sensation in her stomach after their very brief eye contact. In recent times, this had been happening more often. That weird fluttery feeling. It made her want to surgically remove her own stomach. It happens whenever Enid lazily says Wednesday’s name in the mornings, or when their hands brushed against eachother, or in moments like this.
She felt her face slightly heating up. The feeling was almost unbearable.
”Enid? You okay? You look a bit red,” Ajax asked.
“Hm? Oh! Yeah, I’m, um, fine,” she responded.
“I’m bored. We should play truth or dare!” Xavier said.
”That is a horrible idea, Xavier. It is literally a recipe for disaster,” Bianca objected. She was right. Truth or dare never went well.
”Yeah, but, the chaos is what makes it fun. Come on, Bianca. You know you want to.”
She sighed, putting down her phone.
“Okay, fine. Who’s in?”
Everyone in earshot raised their hands. Well, everyone except one. Wednesday.
”Wednesday? You wanna join?” Tyler suggested.
”I think you know the answer to that,” she said.
”Fair. So, who goes first?”
Wednesday immediately stopped listening. It had been around 30 minutes, and they were still going. Something caught Wednesday’s attention, though.
”..truth or dare, Enid?”
”Dare.”
”I dare you to.. close your eyes, and kiss the first person they land on when you open them.”
”That’s so stupid. Fine.”
The room went silent, and an immediate feeling of dread filled Wednesday’s mind. Enid kissing someone? Why was the thought of that so horrible?
After having her eyes closed for a few seconds, Enid opened them again, the first person she saw being Wednesday.
”We—“ she stuttered. Wednesday didn’t raise her head from her book.
Ajax gave her a scowl, although he tried to hide it. He had always had a thing for Enid.
Wednesday looked up, finally, to see nearly everyone staring at her. Enid was staring at her feet.
“Oh. I see. Hm. This is a frivolous waste of time. I’ll be heading back to my dorm.”
Quickly, she packed her books and quill and stood up. She was trying to hide how flustered she was, but her rapid movements weren’t helping.
What just happened?
Enid was dared to kiss her, and while Ajax does like her, she never said no. Does that mean something? Did she want to? Would she?
As soon as she arrived in her dorm, she laid in her bed and stared at the ceiling above. She put her hand to her face, feeling it burning hot.
This is wrong.
There were layers of terrible to this.
Wednesday has a close friend. She has feelings for someone. Extremely strong feelings. That someone is said close friend.
Everything about it was so un-Wednesday.
"Wednesday? Are you here?"
The door crept open. Of course it's her.
Wednesday sat up, desperately trying to hide her flushed face.
"Yes, I am."
Enid smiled. She obviously did not mean for Wednesday to see it, but she did, and she never wanted to look away.
"So," Enid said, setting her bag down on her bed, beginning to unpack it. "About today--"
Wednesday cut her off.
"It's nothing."
She picked up her cello and brought it outside onto the balcony. She needed to get away. She couldn't be there, not today.
The disappointment of seeing Wednesday walk away from her again was almost too much to bear for Enid.
The cello had always been a comfort of Wednesday's. The vibrations of the strings, the familiar melodies, the feeling of the wind on her face.
It allowed her to, even temporarily, escape from reality. It always had.
But apparently, not tonight.
"Wednesday, I think we should talk about what happened today."
Wednesday didn't turn.
"That isn't necessary."
Enid walked in front of her and leaned on the railing. She faced the moon, and all that was visible of her was her silhouette. The wind was gently blowing her hair back. It was a clear night, and like most evenings, it was completely quiet. The silences between Wednesday and Enid are often comfortable, even welcome. Today, it felt different. It was tense.
Unknowingly, Wednesday had stopped playing. She had begun admiring Enid again. In this light, she looked so beautiful, even if you couldn't see her face.
"I..", Wednesday started. Truth is, it was necessary. Because how much longer could she pretend? How much longer could she be cold, heartless, emotionless Wednesday? How much longer until she cracks?
"Wednesday, I know, it was uncomfortable. I know you don't want to you know, ever be in a relationship."
Maybe she was imagining it, but Wednesday could hear the subtlest tone of disappointment in Enid's tone when she mentioned her disdain for relationships.
"I respect it. I get it. Fully. And- just so you know, I don't like you, like that at least."
Finally, Wednesday looked up.
"That's a shame."
She got up, and joined Enid on the railing, choosing not to elaborate on her sentence.
"What?"
Enid's eyes were fixed on Wednesday, because what the hell did she just say? It was a shame Enid didn't like her like that?
"Wednesday? What do you mean?"
Wednesday stared at the ground below. She felt her heart pounding, and she felt like she was 2 seconds away from an aneurysm. The first time in her life that she felt this way.
“This is.. difficult for me to admit.”
Enid looked at her expectantly.
With a sigh, she began explaining.
”Enid.. I’m not sure what this is. I can’t say I have ever felt this way. It feels like you have put some sort of spell on me. Around you, I find myself being, for the first time in my life, nervous. And, to my dismay, I suppose I have..”
She paused for a moment, clearly struggling to speak so openly about her emotions.
”I have feelings. For you, I mean. I hope this is okay to say.”
Enid stared at her in disbelief. She honestly couldn’t believe what she was hearing, and if Wednesday didn’t say something again, she was literally going to punch herself in the face to prove she wasn’t dreaming.
“Really?”
Wednesday nodded sheepishly. It was kind of adorable, and Enid couldn’t help but smile.
She took a step and was now mere inches away from Wednesday. Due to their height difference, she had to tilt her head down to make eye contact with her at this distance.
Her hands glided to Wednesday’s face, cupping it. Wednesday’s hands, in turn, almost as if they instinctively knew what to do, traveled to Enid. Her left hand held one of the other’s wrists, while her right hand slid onto her shoulder, holding on.
Enid leaned her head closer. She could feel Wednesday’s breath on her face, and so she could feel it speed up ever so slightly. She, herself, was struggling to even get air.
How the fuck was this happening?
Wednesday parted her lips slightly and was struggling to make eye contact.
“Wednesday..”, Enid whispered, so quietly, you could only hear it if you were as close to her as Wednesday was in this moment
“Please,” Wednesday said, almost pleading.
Enid was the one to close the distance between them. The kiss was gentle, so gentle. It was warm, and loving, and neither wanted to ever leave this moment.
One of Enid’s hands traveled down to Wednesday’s waist, pulling her closer, if that was even possible.
The feeling was almost intoxicating. It was overpowering.
Finally, Wednesday pulled away for air.
“I love you,” Enid said, wholeheartedly not expecting a response.
It took her a moment.
”I.. I love you too, Enid.”
Enid smiled, and pulled Wednesday in again.
