Work Text:

Scott and Wallace were in a rough patchfor the first time in their relationship. Despite dating since Uni, they always had loopholes or comprised for things. But now they were both in a bit of a mood.

Wallace was easily irritated but kept to himself, until Scott got petty and purposefully left clothes everywhere. And soon the shouting started.

“WHY CAN’T YOU JUST PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF!?” Wallace berrated Scott. “WHY CAN’T YOU JUST MIND YOUR DAMN BUSINESS!?” Scott shouted back, his fists clenched to where his knuckles were white. “BECAUSE I CARE ABOUT YOU, DUMBASS” “WELL MAYBE I DON’T CARE ABOUT YOU” Scott instantly regretted his words, his stature faltering.

Wallace looked shocked and hurt, tears stinging his eyes. “Wallace I-“ “Get out.” Scott’s eyes widened, fear stabbing at his heart. Was this it? Were they done? Surely it wasn’t over after all these years. “Wallace-“ “GET OUT!!” Wallace was in tears now, looking more hurt than Scott has ever seen him. “Okay… I’ll give you some space..”

And Scott took his parka… And left.

Scott came back after a couple hours, wanting to apologize to Wallace for everything. He wanted to make things right. He opened the front door and was met with a dark home. The heater wasn’t even on and he could almost see his breath in the cold.

“Wallace..?” Scott bumped into the couch as he walked through the living room, cursing as he rubbed his knee. There was light coming from beneath the bathroom door, but no running water for a shower or sink. Strange.

“Wallace?” Scott knocked on the door. “Look, I’m sorry- can you come out?” Scott was met with eery silence. “Wallace- this isn’t funny-“ He tried the doorknob. Locked. “Wallace!?” Scott was panicking. He slammed his shoulder against the door, breaking the lock. He froze when he saw Wallace in the bathroom.

There was an empty pill bottle laying on the floor, unlabeled. Wallace leaned against the bath tub, his body limp and cold to the touch. He looked dead. “Nononono-“ Scott knelt beside Wallace, checking his pulse and feeling a faint beat. “Please Wallace, Hold on… I’m gonna get help-“

Scott fumbled his phone, his hands shaking as he dialed the emergency hotline. Once an ambulance was in route, Scott stayed by Wallace’s side, rubbing his hands and trying not to cry. “Hold on… Please.. I’m sorry-“

Scott watched the ambulance cart Wallace away. He followed on foot, needing time to think. He waited for hours in the waiting room. Wanting any information on his boyfriend.

Scott didn’t get the news he wanted. Wallace was gone. He was gone and it was Scott’s fault. If he had said something different, gotten home quicker, done something- ANYTHING- different..

Scott went home that night missing a piece of himself. He lay down in his and Wallace’s- no.. only his now.. bed. He held Wallace’s hoodie close, weeping pitifully until he was wailing. He screamed and shouted at the gods for this. He knew he was in the wrong, but it hurt. He wanted Wallace. He wanted the love of his life. He didn’t want it to end like this.

Scott didn’t come out of the house for days. Until authorites came by and found his body frozen from the lack of heat. He’d never turned the heat back on, but the cause of death recorded was the death of a broken heart. He had been dead for longer than he’d been frozen. But now? He was finally with Wallace.
