Ripples of 500 Years

Summary:

“Fear not, my loyal little subjects, Furina de Fontaine shares food with all of those who worship her!” Suddenly, another head popped out of the water next to the otters, this one more humanoid. He had an odd shimmer to his face, and his eyes were an unnatural shade of light purple with star-like pupils. He had two glowing blue antennae on his head, too. She blinked, mesmerized by the sudden sight of this odd person, whose eyes widened and immediately delved under the water, leaving the five otters still above.

“And he just kind of went back underwater any time he realized I was looking,” Furina finished to the mirror, twisting her hair dry of water, “What an odd human, huh? Do you think he's one of the missing people? Should I send a search party to investigate?”

The woman in the mirror looked thoughtful, “That man…No, it would not be wise to send anyone after him. It would be better if you investigated yourself. Make sure to write your reports down; I'll be back in a week or so to see what you've found.”

"Got it! I'll do my best!" Furina chirped

"...Good Girl"

Chapter Text

The waters of Fontaine were as calm as ever, the sea licking against the land in perfect harmony. An armored crab scuttled across the sand, its foot kicking a shell into the water, where an otter had been searching for some food. With a happy chirp, the Otter grabbed the shell, gripping it in its paws and changed its goal from looking for food to begin looking for something else. The otter chirped happily when it saw a few of its family members, waving the shell around in front of them. The largest chirped back, swimming over and nudging the one with a shell and pointing its nose to the small coral reef that they resided in. The smaller otter chirped again in understanding, swimming towards the coral with his family in tow. Within the coral was a man with long, white hair flowing around him, two glowing blue antennae sprouting from his scalp and floating with his hair. He wore no clothing, as he had no need for it if he were to live underwater. Small blue scales littered his face, and his hands were the same color with talons instead of fingers, the tough blue skin fading into shimmering scales before shimmering into skin. His thighs were splattered in the scales as well, and his feet were similar color as his hands,

His purple eyes fell upon the otter, and he tilted his head with curiosity. The otter happily held out the shell, chirping again. With a small hum, the man took the shell, considering it, before purring softly, holding the shell out for the otter to have, nodding in approval. The Otter took it, did an excited circle in the water, and swam off. The man merely smiled after the little otter; for some reason, they had taken him in as their own when he had come across them a few years ago, although he most definitely looked nothing like them.

He had spent most of his life so far in the water. Although he had been born with this humanoid form, he had been informed by someone or something (He could not quite remember) that he was very much not one. He was a dragon- An ancient dragon sovereign to be exact- That had been resurrected, and he was named Neuvillette. After that, he was thrown into the world, confused and filled with curiosity of the world, desperate to find a ‘purpose’. He had decided that the way to find his purpose likely had to do with water due to the fact he was the Hydro dragon, and that is where he had been “reborn”. Ever since then, he had been swimming through the Fontanian sea, his desire to belong somewhere leading him to live with the otters.

Another otter appeared next to Neuvillette, chirping at him and nudging him, before pointing its paw upwards. The dragon chirped back in response- ‘That time already?’. The otter swirled around once in the water as confirmation, before swimming up to the surface, chirping at a few other otters to join them as Neuvillette swam behind them. Now being led up to the water's surface with five otters in front, he quickened his pace to not be behind.

On the beach stood Furina de Fontaine, the Goddess of Fontaine, laughing cheerfully as she spun around and twirled, scattering bits of food for the birds and crabs nearby to eat. Her eyes were drawn immediately to curious otter heads popping out of the water to watch, and cheerfully waved at them, “Why, hello there, little friends!” She yelled out happily. She readied her hand to scatter some food into the water for the otters as well, “Fear not, my loyal little subjects, Furina de Fontaine shares food with all of those who worship her!” Suddenly, another head popped out of the water, this one more humanoid. Blinking rapidly, she quickly threw the food bits to the otters who took the food happily and submerged under the water. “...How odd,” she murmured to herself, turning away momentarily, picking up a glass shard that had been littered on the beach to tilt it and look behind her, where she saw the humanoid creature pop his head up again, blinking with interest.

Furina suddenly spun around, pointing in the direction of the man, “Aha, caught y-! …Shoot,” she furrowed her eyebrows as all that was there were ripples. How odd. Was this yet another mystical occurrence? Hm…

“And he just kind of went back underwater any time he realized I was looking,” Furina finished to the mirror, twisting her hair dry of water, “What an odd human, huh? Do you think he's one of the missing people? Should I send a search party to investigate?”

The woman in the mirror looked thoughtful; Focalors, the true Goddess of Fontaine, was stuck in the oratrice and reduced to speaking to her mortal form from a mirror, “That man…No, it would not be wise to send anyone after him. It would be better if you investigated yourself. Make sure to write your reports down; I'll be back in a week or so to see what you've found.”

“Is this part of the plan?” Furina asked, “To save Fontaine?”

“It might be,” Focalors said, “But it might not be. I can't be certain until you investigate. Remember, write down everything you find, okay?”

“Yes, mirror-me! I'll do my best, for Fontaine,” Furina chirped happily.

“Good girl.”
