Work Text:

Shinya sat in the living room. He was glad everyone was asleep, he could enjoy read and alone time. He heard someone walking up. He set the book aside, looking over to see Kureto. Shinya plastered on that fake smile he always wore, best he could with how tired he was. Kureto arched a brow at him. He was sure Kureto was wondering why he was up so late. Shinya couldn't say the truth of how he wanted to be alone in a spacious room and not that tiny room he had. So, he decided to go with he couldn't sleep.

"Why are you up so late?" Kureto asked. Shinya took a deep breath, still forcing that smile to stay in place.

"I was having trouble sleeping." He said, doing his best to keep his eyes away from his brothers. He knew those intense Crimson eyes would see through his words. Through his lies. Because while Shinya's smile lied, even if not a good lie, his eyes would betray him.

"Is that so?" Kureto asked, his voice saying he wasn't so sure. Shinya allowed his smile to waver a bit, looking into his brothers eyes.

"Is nii-san worried?" Shinya asked, laughing a bit. The thought of anyone worrying over him was funny alone. Kureto even more so. Kureto reached his hand out, his fingers barely pressing under Shinya's chin. Shinya swallowed hard, biting the inside of his cheek. Kureto was truly intimidating.

"Why wouldn't I worry about one of my subordinates?" Kureto asked. Shinya looked up at him, doing his best to keep up his mask of happiness. His fake smile returning. Almost like he believed what Kureto was saying. That's right. He was just another comrade to Kureto. Nothing more and nothing less. Shinya stood up, back up so that he was out of Kureto's reach.

"I see. I'll go to bed then. Sleep well, nii-san." Shinya said, walking past Kureto. He felt the older man grab his arm. He looked back, not even bothering with a smile this time.

"You can sleep in my room if you are having trouble sleeping." Kureto said. Shinya wiggled out of the Crimson eyed mans hold and once again placed on a fake smile. This one though anyone could tell was strained.

"It's okay. I'll be fine. I'm no child nii-san. I can take care of myself." Shinya said, walking off to his room. Once he was alone he lied down on the bed, a single tear falling down his face. He was sure he had forgot how to cry long ago. He honestly wished he had.

Shinya sat on his bed in his room. He was reading a book, the same book he had been reading a few days ago. Kureto had bought it for him. Nii-san bought a lot of stuff for him. Shinya hated it because while the action seemed sincere to outsiders, to him and those who knew Kureto it wasn't. Because Kureto wanted to own him. Shinya knew this, fought it from being so. Because he didn't wanna be owned by anyone. Because he wanted to be free. Shinya wanted what he could never have, but he could dream couldn't he.

Shinya was in Kureto's office helping him go over some reports. Kureto had his window open, moonlight shining in on them. Shinya seen all the beautiful stars. Kureto looked up to see what Shinya was looking at. He looked back at Shinya. "The stars are beautiful aren't they?" Kureto said. Shinya just nodded his head, unsure of what he could say in response. Kureto set the paper work down, standing up. He walked around, standing behind Shinya. Shinya tensed up, feeling his brothers overwhelming presence behind him. "Maybe I should name one after you Shinya. Though I am sure none could rival your beauty." Kureto said. Shinya laughed, looking back at Kureto.

"When you say it like that. It sounds almost as if you can own me." Shinya said. Kureto looked into Shinya's blue eyes, releasing a small breath.

"Who's to say I can't?" Kureto asked. He reached his hand out, running his fingers along Shinya's face. "Anyone would wish to acquire someone as lovely and beautiful as you." Shinya would have blushed if Kureto hadn't of said those words. Because Kureto sought to own him and that's all he cared to do. He didn't want Shinya's love, he wanted loyalty and blind admiration. Shinya wasn't about to give that to him, so he gentle pushed Kureto's hand away, standing up.

"Nii-san is funny." Shinya said, carefully pushing past the taller male. Kureto watched him walk to the door.

"You wouldn't find it humorous if he had said it." Kureto states plainly. Shinya does his best to keep on a smile, looking back at Kureto.

"But nii-san, we both know Guren would never say such things." Shinya says, heart breaking with every word. Because it's true.

"Then why won't you give yourself to me?" Kureto asked, leaning on his desk. Shinya's smile wavered before turning into a sad smile.

"Because you know only how to own me. I don't want to be another possession of yours. I want to be loved." Shinya opened the door, walking out. He took one look back and said, "we don't own out heavens, only our hells and if you don't know that by now then you don't know me that well." Shinya then left for the night. He headed for his room so that he could cry. Because deep down he knew he already was just something to be owned. Something without the right to freedom. Because Shinya wasn't a star and he couldn't ever be one. Because he had no freedom.

Kureto sat watching the stars under a tree with Shinya. He looked over at the white haired boy, admiring his beauty. Shinya looked over at him. "Is something wrong nii-san?" Shinya asked. Kureto shook his head.

"I was just admiring your beauty." Kureto said. Shinya just shook his head. Kureto brushed a strand away from Shinya's face. "What do I have to do to make you see that I do care for you deeply?" Kureto asked. Shinya looked as if he was thinking.

"You can't. Because you'll never see that the stars are free. I'm not yours to keep." Shinya said, standing up. Kureto frowned a bit, standing as well. He watched as the blue eyed boy walked back toward the house.

"Perhaps you are right. I will never see that the stars are free." Kureto said, looking back up at the sky. Shinya was truly the brightest star of them all. One which Kureto could never own.

The day when the dangerous mission in Nagoya came. Kureto was bothered by this because Shinya was planning to join Guren's squad. To help him. "Shinya, won't you stay by my side?" Kureto asked. Shinya shook his head. Kureto clinched his fists, doing his best to stay calm. "Why does all my attempts to reach you fail?"

"Because nii-san only seeks to own me. If I'm so much of a star to you then know I belong in the sky." Shinya said. Kureto stepped forward eyes almost pleading with the white haired boy. Shinya would have thought he was begging if this wasn't Kureto.

"You might die. This is a suicide mission." Kureto said. Shinya just smiled and shrugged.

"All stars fall at some point." Shinya said. Kureto gave up trying to talk Shinya out of it. Because he and Shinya didn't see this the same. See anything the same. So, Shinya leaves and Kureto watches the star he wished to own. The star he would have bought the world for, go out. He watched that beautiful star burn out and fall. Because all stars fall at one point and Shinya was the brightest of them all.
