Chapter Text
You weren’t sure of how to feel about the Spider-Society.
It was just so weird to know that there are versions of yourself. But then again, were you another alternate version? Was there even an original Spider-person?
Those thoughts liked to play with your mind during school, showers, sleep… most times of the day, to cut it short. You were growing more and more tired every week that passed by. Things became so busy once you became a hero. Your parents were becoming worried due to your lack of energy. It was tiring to deal with the weight of being the only protector in your city. It was suffocating. You wanted to be normal again. The average teenager trying to figure themselves out, not a superhero from your comics.
But then, you met Miles Morales. And he shook your world.
He was the sweetest boy you’d ever met. He went to Visions, a prestigious school in Brooklyn, but was not some stuck-up kid. You both liked to chat all night long, ignoring every responsibility just to catch up. You only ever spoke to him online, but it didn’t change a thing — only your longing to go see him. Be beside him, go see places, play stupid games, meet his parents. Eventually, you only began to think of those wonderful things, and not about your whole spider situation and the heap of work Miguel was dropping on your back.
After 2 years of knowing your boy-best friend, you decided to travel there. Only for a short while — but it was time the two of you finally met. You wanted it to be a surprise, but you of course told your parents. They questioned you how you were going to travel all the way to America, another continent itself. Even if you were Webb. They didn’t doubt your abilities, but were nonetheless worried. Especially your Father, which was not unexpected.
He folded his arms across his chest. “Just for a boy?” he huffed, quirking one eyebrow. You groaned, taking off your spidey mask. “Pa, you know him! Miles is a good one!” you insisted. “He’s not some trash white guy.” Your Dad snorted, “Yeah, like that kid Chad?”
“Pa, that was fourth standard! Give him a chance, I promise he’s good.”
It took you a month’s worth of chores and crime fighting before it was finally time to travel to Brooklyn. You found Visions on google maps, so you just wanted to directly go there. He told you his schedule one time for you to memorize it, for the sake of not calling him in class. You got really tanned, got caught up in random street crimes, but it was all worth it to finally arrive in Brooklyn.
You went to the nearest fast-food place you could find, ate some cheap fries and a burger to spare your wallet, and hopped on a bus.
You stared at your bag, filled with all of your essentials and your suit. Excitement filled up your body like a balloon as you gazed out the window, observing the busy city. Per Miles’ words, it never really slept. Just relaxed a bit a while before midnight. Though it was midday, the busiest time, you found it intriguing. You grew up in a small area and never traveled very often. Being in a new place was always a new adventure.
You felt light on your feet when the bus stopped, and you found yourself at the entrance to Visions, anxiously waiting for your best friend. You quickly called him up, aware that it was the end of his school day. He’d also be going home, since it was Friday.
Your heart sped up when the line clicked and his ringtone ceased. “Hey, what’s up?” he asked, and you couldn’t help but spread your lips into a giddy smile. “It’s like… 4 am where you are. Why you still awake?” He was concerned, and it made you feel even more excited. You felt like you were gonna explode. “‘Cuz I got a surprise for you.” you whispered, tapping your foot anxiously. “You done with school yet? Please tell me you are.” you asked, checking your watch. He should be out by now.
“Uh, yeah… Y/n, is everything okay? Are you alright?”
“I’ve never been better. Now get your butt outta’ that building before I come in there myself.”
“Geez, okay, okay!” You heard him mutter something away from the phone about you being on the other side of the world before returning back to the call, “ Chill, what’s got you so energetic?”
“Questions later, not now!”
Your eyes scanned the crowd of students pouring out of the entrance, and you were a little worried. You could not miss him. It was your absolute duty to make sure you didn’t. “Where are you right now?” you huffed, feeling your foot bounce even more. “Just got out, gonna hop on a sub since my Dad’s busy today.” he said, and you could hear familiar noises on his end, ones you could hear in your surroundings. “Y/n, if you need to talk, I’m always —”
Your eyes widened as the hair on your skin rose, and you suddenly spotted the boy, waving to a group of people whilst tightly holding his phone. Thank you, God, for spider senses. you quickly prayed, before eagerly saying to the phone: “Gotta move, see you!”
Your feet moved quicker than your thoughts. It was not long before you caught up to Miles. You were right behind him. Your best friend was right in front of you. You could swear your heart was banging inside of your chest. You smiled widely as he stared at his phone in bewilderment. “Man…” he mumbled, tucking his phone into his pocket.
You followed him all the way to the subway, surprised he hadn’t even noticed you yet. Was it the thick hoodie? Maybe it was. You stood beside him, just internally screaming out of frustration. Just how well did you unintentionally disguise yourself?? After what seemed like an eternity, he looked at you, his brown eyes blinking at you. He offered a charming smile and nod, and you struggled to return it, and not just jump at him. But you didn’t, and just smiled back.
You both stood in opposite aisles. Somehow, the area wasn’t crowded, and you were able to be left in peace to just gaze at the boy. You quietly called him up again, and watched him immediately scramble to answer. A small giggle left you as he picked up. “What was that, Y/n? Ending the call like some madman.” he questioned, not bothering to hold onto the railing as the bus began to speed up. “Sorry, had to do something important.” you said, stifling another giggle. He rolled his eyes, but grinned, his cute little dimples showing themselves. “You in the sub now?”
“Mhm. By the way, you got no idea what happened in Algebra. Whole place began fighting each other like dogs!” he whispered-yelled, holding in a snicker. “Some kid spread some rumors to Mrs. Kelly, then it went from 1 to 101.” he explained, animatedly moving his arms around. You hummed, leaning on the vertical rail as he explained his day to you. What a dork. you thought, your chest swelling with warm emotions. A cute one, though.
“…but anyway, why are you still up? Missed me that much?” he joked, raising his eyebrows in anticipation. “Yeah, I did.” you smiled. You adored the small embarrassment mixed with happiness that rested on Miles’ face. “You’d be surprised.” you added, excitedly grinning your backpack strap. “Bet.” he challenged.
The bus came to a stop, and once people began to exit, you inched a little closer to him. “I’ll call you. You can, right?” you asked, narrowing your eyes at him. “Course. But after this, you gotta go to bed.” he firmly said, face-calling you. “Fine, Dad.” you snorted, accepting the request whilst recording. He smiled at the phone — at you. He blinked at your background. “You out?” he asked, raising an eyebrow. You eagerly nodded, fiddling with the strings of your hoodie. “Look at who I found.” you said, flipping the camera. You aimed it at him, and his eyes widened. He looked up from the phone, meeting your gaze. “ AY—”
You rushed to him, tightly wrapping your arms around his waist, giggling like crazy. “Y/n!” he exclaimed, returning the bear hug. “Oh my God, how?!” he said in disbelief, pushing you away to get a good look at you. He pulled your hood down, grabbing you by the cheeks. His broad palms were so warm, you melted at his touch. “ Hemfb.” you said muffledly. You imagined little cartoon hearts in your eyes just looking at him. He embraced you again, subconsciously muttering Spanish in your ear. “I can’t believe it.”
You grinned. “Neither can I. Why don’t we not believe it outside?” you playfully suggested, intertwining your hand with his. He flushed, nodding in embarrassment. He led you out, and the two of you just smiled like the idiots you were. He was taller than you imagined. Broader shoulders, sharper face… he was absolutely gorgeous.
“I’m gonna be here for a while,” you informed, squeezing his hand. He grinned. “Want me to show you ‘round? I know some good places.” he said, scratching the back of his neck — a habit he displayed sometimes during your calls. Your gaze softened. “I’d love that.”
———
You grit your teeth, wrapping your arm around your waist. Blood seeped into your suit upon the variety of opening and tears, both in your skin and the fabric itself. You got yourself in the situation — mindlessly thinking that no one would follow you to Brooklyn. There were a few villains you’d met that knew a thing or two about your true identity.
So, that led to you all bruised and groaning. The large, bulky man whom you called Gorilla growled at you, picking you up solely by the collar of your suit. Your limp legs dangled beneath you, unable to move an inch on their own. “Not so tough now, huh Spider?” he mused, ripping your mask right off your face. You gasped at the aggression, wincing as the bruises on your face hurt even more. Gorilla scoffed, tossing your mask onto the dusty floor. “A girl? Some lousy ass girl ruined my entire operation?” he huffed, tossing you back onto the ground.
He found a nearby crowbar amidst the rubble, spinning it between his bulky fingers. “How ‘bout I dent that smart head of yours, Spider?” he suggested, his voice dripping with venom. “N-no thanks, I just started liking it.” you grumbled, coughing up another bough of blood. Gorilla smirked, raising it above his head, his figure looming over you. “Too bad.” he hissed. You closed your eyes shut, muttering a quick prayer as you braced for impact.
It never came. Rather, you heard a gunshot.
Gorilla snapped his head to look behind him, and from the side, you could make out a figure. Panic immediately coursed through your veins as you saw Miles. “GET OUT OF HERE, MILES!” you screamed, though it was silenced as the man just dropped the crowbar on your stomach.
“Got some — nerve, don’t you, kid?” he hissed, glaring daggers at the boy. He shakily gulped, his adam's apple bobbing. “Leave her alone.” he muttered, pointing the gun at Gorilla.
You desperately tried to scream and beg your friend to run away, but your voice wasn’t willing. It only came out as rasps and whispers. Through your half-lidded gaze, you watched the villain approaching Miles. You stretched out a hand, a pathetic web falling to the ground. “Miles. Miles, Miles…” you groaned, eyes wide as the gun was tossed away.
You let out some kind of a scream when Gorilla began punching Miles, over and over again. Tears streamed down your face as you sobbed, unable to move whilst your best friend was being attacked. “No, no… Please..!” you cried, staring at his limp body through your blurry gaze.
Everything after that was unclear. The only thing you could remember was his tattered figure and some commotion in the background. Someone had picked you up, then placed you next to Miles. You brought up a hand to rub his cheek, sobbing and sobbing like you’d never cried before. Your chest twisted at his lifeless eyes and his damaged face. “C-come back.” you pleaded, wrapping your hands around his palm, lurching at the coldness that replaced the warmth you had gotten used to. You let out a shaky wail, burying your face into his chest.
Your best friend was dead. Your Miles was dead .
