Chapter Text
Ringing. Something rings. My eyes open, sun rays shine through the half-closed blinds and land direct on the source of the sound which woke me up: my phone. I forgot it could even do that, seeing that I hadn’t had much contact to many people these past few weeks?Months, probably, even. Doesn’t matter anyway.
My arm moves on auto pilot to my phone, my hand shakes as I lift it up. An unknown number. Who could this be? And this early? My hands still shake while pressing the green button on my display.
"Hello?", my voice sounds hoarse, I don’t really use it that much anymore.
The speaker crackles a little before a man’s voice finally answers: "Hello, this is Raglan speaking. Am I talking to… Uhm…", paper ruffling can be heard in the background, "Am I talking to y/n? Y/n Fairburn?"
I haven’t heard my last name said in a long time, and normally my first name sounds more like an insult these days than a name. "Yes, that’s me."
„Very good! I’m calling regards your application as a night guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. You have the job, if you’re still interested!"
What? Suddenly I jolt up due to the adrenaline rush. I feel nauseous and like I’m about to faint, so I slide back till I feel the headboard of my bed for more stability.
"Hello?", his voice echoes through my head as I try to calm my racing heart.
I clear my throat, so I have a little more time to find the right words: "But I didn’t even have an interview?"
Mr. Raglan laughs: "That isn’t necessary, kid! This job position is a little… How can I say? Different. And the working hours don’t really make it attractive to many people."
He’s right there. Working nights with this kind of wage isn’t really inviting, but you gotta do what you gotta do to get out. "I’d love to take that job.", I said, a little bit of a lie seeing that it could get scary at night, in an old, closed pizzeria where children died probably.
"Excellent. How about we meet up tomorrow, I show you around and we get that whole paper work out of the way… Then that night you could do your first shift, if you’re comfortable with that?"
A bit taken by surprise I need a second to answer: "Yeah, of course! That works for me, when do you want to meet up?"
"How about 5 PM?", he asks.
"Yep!" I answer.
We say something along the lines of "Thank you" and "goodbye" to each other, I don’t really know. My mouth moves and I feel the vibration of my vocal cords, but I don’t know what I say. Nevertheless, we hang up. Fitting, because I hear muffled sounds coming from the living room, soon after I hear a glass shattering. My mother’s awake again or still, I don’t know. She probably shattered her last wineglass.
My door’s locked so I just put in my noise cancelling earbuds and listen to some podcasts. Don’t have a reason to do anything else, anyway.
